The Pixel Watch 4 did not return to conventional Qi wireless charging. Leaked renders published on April 11, 2025 appeared to show the familiar rear charging contacts disappearing, which sparked speculation about a contactless charging system. The released watch instead uses a new side-mounted Quick Charge Dock with magnetic charging pins.
That means faster charging, but not compatibility with generic Qi pads, Pixel phones’ reverse wireless charging, or automatically compatible older Pixel Watch chargers.

What the leaked renders showed
The renders, attributed to 91mobiles and OnLeaks in contemporaneous reporting, showed a familiar circular Pixel Watch design with apparent changes to the underside. Most notably, the four visible charging contacts used by the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 appeared to be missing.
The images also suggested a thicker body of approximately 14.3 mm. That could have pointed to a larger battery or a broader internal redesign, but renders alone could not establish the reason. They showed exterior geometry—not the charging hardware inside.

Why the missing contacts suggested wireless charging
Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 charge through a magnetic accessory that aligns with four rear pins. If those contacts were genuinely removed, a charging coil would have been one plausible explanation. That led to theories about a return to contactless inductive charging, potentially similar in principle to Qi.
But the same evidence could also have indicated a redesigned proprietary contact system, a different dock arrangement, or inaccuracies in the renders. The absence of visible pins could not prove Qi, Qi2, or any other open charging standard.
What Google actually shipped
Google released the Pixel Watch 4 in 41 mm and 45 mm sizes with a new Quick Charge Dock. The dock connects to a USB-C power source and charges the watch through a side-mounted magnetic pin interface. Google’s official specifications identify this dock as the charging method; they do not list Qi or Qi2 support.

Google says the new charging experience is 25% faster than the previous generation. Both sizes reach approximately 50% in 15 minutes, which makes a short top-up practical before exercise or during a morning routine. Those figures are Google’s estimates, not independent test results.
Is the Pixel Watch 4 wireless-charging compatible?
Only in the limited sense that you do not plug a cable directly into the watch. The watch attaches magnetically to a dedicated dock, but power still crosses through the dock’s charging pins.
It is therefore more accurate to call this magnetic dock charging or proprietary pin-based charging than generic wireless charging. Google’s charging documentation also says that Pixel Watch 4 does not support reverse wireless charging from Pixel phones. A Pixel phone, Pixel Stand, or ordinary phone Qi pad should not be treated as a compatible charger.

What existing Pixel Watch owners need to know
Owners upgrading from a Pixel Watch 2 or Pixel Watch 3 should not assume that their old magnetic USB-C chargers work with the Pixel Watch 4. Google’s support guidance tells owners to use the Pixel Watch 4 Quick Charge Dock included with the purchase. A replacement or travel dock should be specifically identified as compatible with Pixel Watch 4.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe dock requires a compatible USB-C power adapter, and the adapter is not included. A reputable USB-C Power Delivery adapter is the sensible choice; the watch’s safety guide also covers power, ventilation, moisture, and damaged charging equipment.

- The watch is attached but not charging: Reseat it, confirm the crown faces upward, and check that the dock is supported and connected to power.
- The dock does not align: Remove obstructions such as debris, a case, or a band interfering with the charging area.
- The watch or dock is damp: Dry both before charging.
- An unsupported-charger warning appears: Use the Pixel Watch 4 Quick Charge Dock rather than an old watch charger or generic smartwatch accessory.
- Charging stops after extended time: Google’s Battery Defender can pause charging when the watch remains connected for four days or longer.
Adaptive Charging can be enabled at Settings → Battery → Adaptive charging. Google’s battery-life claims are up to 30 hours for the 41 mm model and up to 40 hours for the 45 mm model with always-on display, or up to 48 and 72 hours respectively in Battery Saver. Actual endurance varies with features, network conditions, cellular signal, and usage.

The practical trade-off
The Pixel Watch 4’s charging redesign favors speed over charger flexibility. The dedicated dock is faster and uses USB-C for power, but it remains another accessory to pack for travel and does not let owners use the Qi pads already common around a home or office.
That makes the buying decision straightforward:
- Choose the Pixel Watch 4 if fast top-ups and the new watch are more important than open-standard charging.
- Budget for a genuine replacement or travel dock if you regularly charge in more than one location.
- Do not buy a generic Qi pad expecting it to work.
- Do not count on Pixel phone reverse charging.
Verdict
The renders correctly suggested that Google was redesigning the back of the watch, but they did not predict the final charging standard. The Pixel Watch 4 is not a return to conventional Qi wireless charging. It is a faster, proprietary magnetic-pin system built around Google’s Quick Charge Dock.
