Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe Pixel Watch 4 is the better watch; the Pixel Watch 3 is often the better value. Google’s newer model improves the display, battery life, charging setup, repair prospects, connectivity, and emergency features. However, it keeps the same 41mm and 45mm case choices and much of the same Fitbit, health, fitness, and Pixel ecosystem experience.
As of August 18, 2026, the Pixel Watch 5 has also been announced, so the Pixel Watch 4 is no longer Google’s newest generation. That does not make it a poor buy: it is the more future-facing choice, while a heavily discounted Watch 3 can deliver nearly the same everyday smartwatch experience for considerably less.

The differences that matter
1. Watch 4 has a brighter, more usable display
The Pixel Watch 4 replaces the Watch 3’s AMOLED LTPO display with a domed Actua 360 design. Google rates it at up to 3,000 nits versus 2,000 nits for the Watch 3, while also claiming a 10% larger active display area and 15% smaller bezels.
#1 Best Overall
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
That should make maps, workout screens, notifications, and complications easier to read outdoors. The larger active area also makes the Watch 4 feel more screen-forward without changing the nominal 41mm or 45mm case sizes. Peak brightness is not the same as a guaranteed 50% improvement in every outdoor situation: reflections, auto-brightness, ambient light, and the content on screen still matter.
The domed glass gives the newer watch a more premium appearance, although it also places more curved surface toward the outside of the case. The Watch 4 is a visual refinement, not a radically different watch shape.
2. Battery life is the strongest upgrade
| Model | Always-on display | Battery Saver |
|---|---|---|
| Pixel Watch 3, 41mm or 45mm | Up to 24 hours | Up to 36 hours |
| Pixel Watch 4, 41mm | Up to 30 hours | Up to 48 hours |
| Pixel Watch 4, 45mm | Up to 40 hours | Up to 72 hours |
These are Google’s “up to” figures, not guaranteed daily runtimes. LTE use, GPS, music streaming, calls, high brightness, frequent workouts, and weak cellular signal can reduce endurance. Battery Saver mode may limit or disable some functions, so its 48- and 72-hour figures should not be compared directly with normal always-on use.

It is much more plausible to wear overnight for sleep tracking and still use it through the next day without an immediate charge. The 41mm Watch 4 is also meaningfully better than either Watch 3 size, but the improvement is smaller.

3. Charging changes, but official comparisons are limited
The Watch 3 uses a USB-C fast-charging cable; the Watch 4 uses a Quick Charge Dock. Existing Watch 3 owners should not assume their old charging cable is the correct Watch 4 accessory.
Google lists the Watch 3 at approximately 24 minutes to 50%, 35 minutes to 80%, and 60 minutes to full for the 41mm model. The 45mm model is listed at approximately 28 minutes to 50%, 50 minutes to 80%, and 80 minutes to full. Charging speed depends on size, battery level, temperature, and test conditions. Google’s Watch 4 specification page confirms the new dock but does not provide a directly equivalent complete charging table here, so the Watch 4 should not be called universally faster without specifying a test.

In practice, a quick top-up while showering or getting ready may matter more than the headline battery capacity.

4. Repairability gives Watch 4 a long-term advantage
Google describes the Pixel Watch 4 as designed for repair, including display and battery repair pathways. That could reduce the likelihood of replacing the entire watch after a damaged screen or aging battery, making repairability more than a sustainability talking point.
There are important limits. Repair availability, parts, labor, cost, tools, water resistance after repair, warranty terms, and local service options can vary by country. “Repairable” does not mean easy, free, or universally serviceable. Still, for someone planning to keep a watch for several years, this is one of the Watch 4’s most meaningful ownership differences.

5. Watch 4 adds newer connectivity and satellite SOS
The Watch 4 moves from Bluetooth 5.3 to Bluetooth 6.0 and adds standalone satellite communication support according to Google’s specifications and product announcement. Satellite SOS is most relevant to hikers, travelers, and people who spend time beyond reliable cellular coverage.
It should not be treated as universal satellite texting or a replacement for a dedicated satellite messenger. Availability and behavior can depend on country, network conditions, supported model, account setup, and service requirements. Google’s published material confirms the hardware capability but does not establish every regional or service-level limitation.
The Watch 3 does not list satellite SOS in its official specifications. This is a hardware-dependent difference that a software update cannot simply add.

- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]

6. Compatibility is slightly narrower on Watch 4
The Pixel Watch 3 works with most phones running Android 10 or newer. The Watch 4 requires Android 11 or newer. Both require a Google Account and the Pixel Watch app, and neither is intended for iPhone users.
Some features work best with a Pixel phone. LTE models also require compatible carrier activation; buying an LTE watch does not automatically provide free cellular service. Google displayed a US offer for two years of Google Fi data with qualifying Watch 4 LTE purchases, but the offer says calling is not supported and the service ends if the watch is returned.

Both generations offer 41mm and 45mm cases, recycled aluminum housings, GPS, heart-rate tracking, ECG assessment, sleep tracking, activity and workout tracking, stress and readiness-style insights, notifications, calls, Google Maps, Wallet, music, and Pixel ecosystem integration.
The Watch 3 already introduced the 45mm size and major Fitbit running and fitness capabilities. The basic health experience is therefore much closer than the generation numbers suggest. Android Central has reported that many Watch 4 software improvements may reach Watch 3, but software rollout, device eligibility, region, and subscription requirements vary.
A feature launching first on Watch 4 is not automatically hardware-exclusive. Conversely, satellite communication, newer radio hardware, and repair-oriented construction cannot be delivered to Watch 3 through an ordinary software update.

| Watch 4 45mm | 45mm | 12.3mm | 36.7g |
The dimensions and weights are nearly unchanged. The Watch 4’s improvement comes mainly from its display, bezel treatment, and domed glass—not from being substantially thinner or lighter.
Which size should you buy?
- Choose 41mm for smaller wrists, a lighter visual presence, and easier everyday comfort. The Watch 4 still improves battery life over the Watch 3 41mm.
- Choose 45mm for the largest screen and the best battery endurance. The Watch 4 45mm’s up-to-40-hour normal-use rating and up-to-72-hour Battery Saver rating make it the practical battery choice.
For existing Watch 3 owners
- Keep the Watch 3 if its battery lasts through your normal day and night and you mainly use Fitbit tracking, workouts, notifications, GPS, ECG, and Google apps.
- Upgrade to Watch 4 if battery life is now frustrating, outdoor readability is a problem, repairability matters, or satellite SOS is genuinely useful to you.
- Do not upgrade solely for a new case size, basic health tracking, or the promise of newer software. Many software features can reach Watch 3, while the health experience remains broadly similar.
For first-time buyers
Buy the Pixel Watch 3 when the equivalent model is at least $100–$150 cheaper and you do not need satellite SOS, repair-oriented construction, or the Watch 4’s battery advantage. It remains a strong entry point into Fitbit and Google’s smartwatch ecosystem.
Buy the Pixel Watch 4 when the price gap is modest, you want the newer hardware platform and longer remaining support runway, or you regularly need more than a day of always-on battery life. If endurance is your priority, choose the 45mm version.

Google’s pages showed inconsistent dynamic pricing by configuration and promotion, so check the selected size, connectivity version, color, and current discount before buying. Effective price matters more than launch MSRP.
Also account for LTE service, Google Health Premium after its trial, and any protection plan. Pixel Care+ prices displayed on one Watch 4 configuration were $5 per month or $99 for two years, while another showed $6 per month or $119; availability and terms vary, and the page stated it was unavailable to New York residents.
Google trade-in values depend on the device and declared condition. The trade-in partner generally must receive the old device within 30 days of receiving the new one. A low-value or damaged Watch 3 may be worth keeping or selling separately.
