It applied to the Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3 and Pixel Watch 4—including Bluetooth/Wi-Fi and LTE versions—and used global build BP4A.251205.005.W7. The original 2022 Pixel Watch was not eligible and remained on Wear OS 5.1.
The rollout was phased, so availability varied by device, carrier and region. Because this update is now historical, current owners should check their installed version rather than assume the December rollout is still pending.

What changed in the December 2025 update?
The update brought Wear OS 6.1, based on Android 16, alongside model-specific usability improvements. Google also directed readers to the Pixel Watch Security Bulletin for applicable security fixes. Separate Google Play Store app updates may arrive independently of the full Wear OS installation.
#1 Best Overall
- The new Google Pixel Watch 5 offers a smarter way to a healthier you.[1,2]; Designed for Gemini Intelligence, get proactive help, and personalized insights from Google Health[3,4]; watch is compatible with Android devices only; not compatible with iOS devices
- Precision-crafted to do it all: The Google Pixel Watch 5 features the domed Actua 360 display with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass and up to 40 hours of battery life[1,5]
- Metrics that matter: Advanced sensors help you stay ahead of your health and wellness; and Google Pixel’s most accurate heart rate tracking is fine-tuned for your activity[6,7]
- Understand your sleep like never before: Your watch captures insights like the time spent in sleep stages to breathing regularity, then summarizes it all in a personalized Sleep Score[8,9]
- Detects loss of pulse, then calls for help: Pixel Watch 5 is the only smartwatch to feature Loss of Pulse Detection, which can prompt a call to emergency services[10]
Pixel Watch 4 hand gestures
Pixel Watch 4’s headline additions were Double pinch and Wrist turn.
- Double pinch: Tap the index finger and thumb together twice. Google described it for scrolling through alerts, sending the first Smart Reply, managing the timer and stopwatch, snoozing an alarm, playing or pausing media, and taking a photo through a compatible camera workflow.
- Wrist turn: Quickly turn the wrist away and back to silence an incoming call or close an alerting notification.
Google said answering and ending calls with Double pinch would be added “soon.” That should not be treated as part of the initial December feature set.
These are distinct from older Wear OS wrist-navigation gestures, which cover actions such as scrolling, selecting notification actions, opening menus and returning to the watch face. Google documents those older motions on its Wear OS gesture help page.

Smart Replies on Pixel Watch 3 and 4
Pixel Watch 3 joined Pixel Watch 4 in receiving improved Smart Replies generated with an on-device language model derived from Google’s Gemma model family. Google claimed the new approach was twice as fast as the previous one and nearly three times more memory-efficient.
The change is most relevant when the watch is not tethered to the phone. Smart Replies remain a constrained set of suggested responses, not a general-purpose AI assistant or unrestricted text-generation system.
What Pixel Watch 2 owners should expect
Pixel Watch 2 received Wear OS 6.1, but Google’s documentation does not extend the new hand gestures to that model. Installing the operating-system update therefore does not guarantee that a Hand gestures menu or Pixel Watch 4 feature set will appear.
Rank #3
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
How to check for Wear OS 6.1
- Wake the watch and open Settings.
- Tap System.
- Select System updates.
- Check for an available update and follow the on-screen installation instructions.
- After installation, return to the update or system software information screen and verify the installed version and build.
The build listed by Google for the global December rollout was BP4A.251205.005.W7. Regional or carrier variants may show a different suffix, and a later build may have replaced it. Do not treat a different current build as evidence that the watch missed Wear OS 6.1.

How to manage the new hand gestures
On a supported watch, Google says hand gestures were enabled by default. The watch controls are at:
Rank #4
- Google Pixel Watch has a beautiful circular, domed design and new experience with Wear OS by Google, so it’s easy to get help at a glance
- Stay on top of activity, calories burned, and more with Fitbit activity tracking
- Track your heart rate and get insight into your sleep
- Save time with things like Google Wallet for contactless payments, turn-by-turn directions using Maps, and event notifications from Calendar
- Stay connected and productive wherever you go; respond to messages, manage your inbox, and make calls right from your wrist

The companion-phone path is:
Google Pixel Watch app → Settings → Gestures → Hand gestures
Gesture hints could be set to Always, Daily, Weekly, Monthly or Once. Frequent hints may help new users learn the controls, while less frequent hints reduce interruptions. The feature was documented for Pixel Watch 3 and 4 running Wear OS 6.1 or later; the December announcement presented the gestures as a Pixel Watch 4 highlight.

Why might the update not appear?
During the original rollout, a missing update did not necessarily indicate a fault. Google said distribution would proceed in phases over several weeks, with availability dependent on carrier and device. Other common explanations include:
Best Value
- The Google Pixel Watch 3 is designed for performance, with advanced fitness from Fitbit[1,2]; the 45mm screen is twice as bright and 40% larger than before, making it easier to see your stats and info[1]
- Maximize your performance with advanced running features; build custom run workouts and get real-time guidance and advanced form tracking[3]
- Enhance your run routine with Fitbit Premium; Google AI uses your goals, past runs, and readiness to power personalized run recommendations[3]
- Know what your body is ready for each day with readiness; it uses sleep, resting heart rate, and heart rate variability to show if you’re ready to take on a workout or prioritize recovery[3]
- Cardio load measures how hard your heart works so you can see how hard you’ve pushed; compare trends to see if you’re under- or over-training[3]
- The watch is the original Pixel Watch, which was outside the listed applicability.
- The rollout had not yet reached that region, carrier or LTE/Bluetooth variant.
- The watch lacks sufficient charge or a suitable Wi-Fi connection.
- Pixel Watch apps or companion software need updating.
- The watch is already running a later build.
Recommended troubleshooting sequence
- Charge the watch sufficiently and connect it to Wi-Fi.
- Keep it near the paired phone while checking.
- Restart the watch, then retry Settings → System → System updates.
- Open Google Play on the watch and install pending app updates.
- Check the installed model and build under the system software information.
- Do not factory-reset the watch solely because an OTA update has not appeared.
- If an eligible watch remains stuck on an unexpectedly old version, use Google’s official Pixel Watch support channels.
Disabling Bluetooth was reported as a possible way to encourage a Wi-Fi-based check, but it was not an official Google prerequisite. Likewise, sideloading an OTA should not be attempted without verified, model-specific official instructions.
What about the original Pixel Watch?
The first-generation Pixel Watch was not simply waiting for the December 2025 rollout. Google’s applicability list covered Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4, while contemporary coverage reported that the original model remained on Wear OS 5.1. The available announcement does not provide a broader explanation of Google’s support-policy reasoning, so owners should not assume Wear OS 6.1 will arrive later through this release.
Do you need to upgrade?
Existing Pixel Watch 2, 3 and 4 owners did not need to buy new hardware to receive the update. Pixel Watch 2 owners gained the operating-system update but not the new hand gestures. Pixel Watch 3 owners gained the enhanced Smart Replies and are covered by Google’s later hand-gesture documentation, while Pixel Watch 4 received the clearest headline benefit through Double pinch and Wrist turn.

Consider an upgrade for newer hardware or model-specific capabilities, not because existing eligible watches were excluded from Wear OS 6.1.
