Pixel Watch March 2024 Update: Pixel Watch 2 Features on the Original Watch

The March 2024 Pixel Feature Drop added selected Pixel Watch 2 workout and wellness features to the original Pixel Watch—but not its newer hardware.

Google’s March 4, 2024 Pixel Feature Drop brought several Pixel Watch 2 fitness and wellness features to the first-generation Pixel Watch: Pace Training, Heart Zone Training, a redesigned workout screen, selected automatic workout controls, and Fitbit Relax. It closed part of the software gap between the watches, but did not give the original model Pixel Watch 2 hardware or every newer feature.

Which Pixel Watch 2 features came to the original Pixel Watch?

Google announced the changes as part of its March 2024 Pixel Feature Drop. The rollout began on March 4 and continued over the following weeks, so owners did not necessarily see every feature on that date.

Feature What arrived on the first-generation Pixel Watch Key qualification
Pace Training Set a target pace and receive feedback during a workout. Usefulness depends on activity and GPS conditions.
Heart Zone Training See heart-rate zones and receive zone-change alerts. Zones are training estimates, not medical measurements.
Workout interface Larger text, brighter colors, and more glanceable pace and heart-rate information. A presentation change, not a claim of greater measurement accuracy.
Automatic workout controls Automatic start and, for supported activities, stop. Treadmill supports automatic start only.
Fitbit Relax Guided breathing exercises on the watch. A relaxation tool, not treatment for a health condition.
Voice cues Audio coaching can supplement workout feedback. Requires Pixel Buds Pro or compatible earbuds; haptics are an alternative.

How Pace Training works

Pace Training lets you choose a target pace for an exercise and get feedback about whether you are keeping to it. Google says the watch uses its GPS and motion sensors to assess pace; when you move outside the target range, it can give haptic feedback, with voice cues available through Pixel Buds Pro or compatible earbuds.

To set a pace goal, open the relevant exercise or running controls, tap Goals, then Pace, choose Set a Goal, and swipe to select a pace in minutes per mile or the applicable unit. Google’s current pace-coaching help page documents the feature for Pixel Watch 1 and Pixel Watch 2; labels may vary with the Fitbit Exercise app version.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Pace feedback is a coaching aid, not a guarantee of GPS precision. Indoor workouts, tunnels, dense urban surroundings, obstructed signals, and abrupt pace changes can make it less useful.

What Heart Zone Training tells you

Heart Zone Training shows how your effort relates to personalized heart-rate zones. Google says those zones draw on factors including resting heart rate and fitness level. Lower zones generally correspond to easier aerobic effort, while higher zones indicate greater intensity. That can be more informative than pursuing one heart-rate number, because the zones are tailored to the wearer.

The watch can show the current zone and provide haptic alerts when you move between zones; compatible earbuds can provide voice alerts. These readings can be affected by fit, movement, skin contact, temperature, and individual physiology. Treat them as general workout guidance, not diagnosis or clinical advice. Google’s Pixel Watch health and fitness help describes related setup and feature distinctions.

Automatic workout start and stop: supported activities and limits

The update added automatic workout start and stop for selected activities, rather than universal detection for every kind of exercise. Google named running, walking, elliptical, spinning, outdoor biking, treadmill, and rowing. Treadmill is the exception: it supports automatic start, but not automatic stop.

Recognition can take time, and a short session may go undetected. Similar movements can also produce a missed or mistaken detection. An automatically detected workout may begin recording after you have already started exercising, so it may not capture the full session. If exact start and stop times, intervals, or a structured workout matter, start and end tracking manually.

What changed on the workout screen?

The redesigned workout interface uses larger text and brighter colors, with pace and heart-rate information made easier to scan during exercise. This is a visibility improvement, separate from the new training controls. GPS workout recording and auto-pause were not, by themselves, new additions of this feature drop.

What Fitbit Relax does

Fitbit Relax brings guided breathing exercises to the original Pixel Watch. You can use it after exercise or for a short calming session at another time. It is a breathing and relaxation feature, not a treatment for anxiety, panic disorder, high blood pressure, or other medical conditions.

How to find the features if they are missing

The March rollout was staged, and some additions depended on Fitbit or related app updates rather than watch firmware alone. Owners reported staggered availability in contemporary discussions, including one Pixel Watch community thread and another; these are individual reports, not evidence that every owner had the same problem.

  1. Install the available system update on the watch and confirm it is paired and syncing with the phone.
  2. Update the Fitbit app on the phone. On the watch, open Google Play Store and check for Fitbit or Exercise app updates.
  3. Check that the relevant Bluetooth, location, and phone permissions are enabled for Fitbit and Pixel Watch apps.
  4. Restart the watch after installing updates, then sync it with the phone.
  5. Open an applicable workout and look in its goals or pace controls. Fitbit Exercise features may appear in workout controls rather than in a new system menu.

If Pace Training still does not appear after those checks, a staged app rollout or sync issue may be the reason; a factory reset is disruptive and is not a sensible first troubleshooting step. If automatic detection is unreliable, choose the activity manually and start tracking yourself. Wear the watch snugly above the wrist bone and allow time for recognition when testing automatic start.

For voice cues, pair Pixel Buds Pro or compatible earbuds with the watch, make sure they are connected during the workout, and check audio-feedback settings. If audio is unavailable, use the watch’s haptic alerts.

Did the update make Pixel Watch 1 equivalent to Pixel Watch 2?

No. Google brought selected software features to the original watch, not a hardware-level upgrade. The update did not add Pixel Watch 2’s processor, physical design, battery capacity, or sensor package, nor did it transfer every later-generation health or safety feature. The feature drop narrowed a fitness-software gap; it did not establish full feature parity.

Should you keep the original Pixel Watch or upgrade?

Keeping the original makes sense if

  • You mainly wanted pace targets, heart zones, basic GPS workouts, notifications, payments, or casual activity tracking.
  • Your watch’s battery life and performance remain acceptable.
  • You would otherwise upgrade only for the workout features in this March 2024 update.

An upgrade may be worthwhile if

  • You are unhappy with your original watch’s battery life or performance, or its battery has degraded.
  • You want newer sensors, health or safety features that were not brought to the first-generation model, or more advanced training tools.
  • Your existing watch has hardware problems or you want newer hardware with a longer remaining support horizon.

Casual exercisers and runners who chiefly wanted the listed software additions can reasonably keep a working first-generation watch. The update alone is not a reason to replace it. Conversely, it does not resolve battery, hardware, or newer-feature needs. Voice cues are optional: earbuds are only relevant if you want audio coaching rather than visual or haptic feedback.
