Polar OS 5 is a free watch firmware update that adds dark map rendering, improved map controls, post-workout perceived-exertion scoring, a seven-day SpO2 test history and other quality-of-life changes. It is available across five current Polar watches, but features vary by model: Polar specifically says dark map mode is unavailable on the Ignite 3.
The update began rolling out in January 2026. For example, Polar lists firmware version 5.0.13 for the Grit X2 Pro, released on January 19, 2026. (Polar support)

Which Polar watches get OS 5?
Polar’s OS 5 software-release page lists these compatible models:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Polar Vantage M3
- Polar Grit X2
- Polar Vantage V3
- Polar Grit X2 Pro
- Polar Ignite 3
Compatibility does not mean feature parity. The most important limitation is that dark map mode is not available on the Ignite 3. Polar’s broader firmware-support information also should not be read as a promise that every supported watch receives every new feature. Product support can include maintenance firmware and critical fixes without delivering all headline functions to older hardware. (Polar firmware support)

What dark maps actually change
Dark maps change the appearance of Polar’s map views to a darker theme. That can make a bright map less harsh during night runs, hikes and rides, particularly when the watch is being used in low-light conditions.
This is a display and usability improvement—not a new map database or a new navigation service. It does not provide turn-by-turn voice guidance, replace a headlamp or remove the limitations of navigating on a small watch display. Polar has not published a measured battery saving for the dark theme, so it should be treated as a viewing-comfort feature rather than a battery upgrade. (Polar’s Grit X2 Pro update notes)
On the Grit X2 Pro, enter the map-navigation view, open the map-navigation menu and change the map theme to the dark option. The exact controls vary by model, and Ignite 3 owners should not expect to find the setting.

Map controls are quicker on the Grit X2 Pro
Polar says the Grit X2 Pro’s map-zoom mode can be opened with one press of the OK button from the map-navigation view. You can then zoom with the watch buttons or a pinch gesture. While in zoom mode, pressing OK opens the map-navigation menu; from the regular map-navigation view, pressing OK twice opens it.
Rank #2
- Provides essential tracking for runners including time, pace, distance, laps, stopwatch on a crystal clear, always-on, MIP color display
- Up to 35 hours of battery life on a single charge in training mode; up to 100 hours in power save mode
- Perfect for men or women
- GPS tracks every step and turn
- Easy to use
That should make map manipulation less cumbersome, but it is not a fundamental navigation overhaul. You still need suitable offline map coverage, a downloaded route where appropriate and a reliable GPS signal. The watch’s screen size remains a practical constraint.
The training tools are more useful than the headline suggests
Post-workout RPE on the watch
After recording a workout, OS 5 lets users enter a subjective rating of perceived exertion from 0 to 10 directly on the watch. Polar’s feature description places this rating alongside objective training information such as heart rate, pace and power. (Polar OS 5 feature list)
That matters because sensors cannot fully explain how a session felt. Heat, hills, poor sleep, illness, stress and accumulated fatigue can make a workout feel much harder—or easier—than its heart-rate trace suggests. Recording RPE soon after finishing gives that context a place in your training history.
RPE is not a physiological measurement or a medical assessment. Its value comes from consistent use: apply the same personal 0–10 scale over time and look for patterns, such as easy sessions repeatedly feeling hard or moderate workouts producing unexpectedly high effort.
Rank #3
- Lightweight fitness tracking smartwatch to help keep you active
- Up to 50 hours of battery life on a single charge in training mode (up to 4 days in watch mode)
- Easy, single button use
- Features advanced, wrist-based heart rate monitoring and specialized sleep and recovery tools for improved performance
- Water resistant with GPS that tracks every step and turn
A seven-day SpO2 history
On compatible watches, OS 5 can show the last seven SpO2 test results as a simple seven-day trend graph. This provides recent context instead of forcing the user to interpret a single reading in isolation.
It is important not to overstate the feature. Polar describes a history of test results—not continuous all-day or overnight blood-oxygen monitoring. It is not a diagnostic tool, and an unusual result should not be treated as a medical conclusion. (Polar’s OS 5 software page)
New watch-face widgets
Polar lists Nightly Recharge and Weekly Summary among the new watch-face complications or widgets. These do not add new sensors; they make existing recovery and training information easier to reach at a glance.
Route direction in previews
Route direction in the preview helps show the direction or orientation of a planned route before starting. It should make route preparation clearer, but it should not be confused with turn-by-turn guidance, live traffic data or new third-party mapping support.
Rank #4
- Provides essential tracking for runners including time, pace, distance, laps, stopwatch on a crystal clear, always-on, MIP color display

- Perfect for men or women
- GPS tracks every step and turn

Other everyday improvements
OS 5 adds multiple alarms, allowing more than one active alarm at a time. That is a small change, but useful for athletes juggling wake-up times, training reminders and travel schedules. Polar also lists interface, widget and stability refinements alongside the larger map and training additions. (Polar software-release page)
How to install Polar OS 5
- Open the Polar Flow mobile app and synchronize your watch.
- If firmware is available, follow the update instructions shown in the app.
- Alternatively, connect the watch to a computer and use Polar FlowSync.
- Charge the watch sufficiently and keep the connection active until installation finishes.
- Synchronize again afterward and check the firmware version in the watch’s device settings or Polar Flow.
Polar confirms Flow and FlowSync as the official update routes. Menu labels can differ by watch and software version, so there is no single universal settings path to quote. (Grit X2 Pro update instructions)
Firmware updates and offline maps are separate
Installing OS 5 does not automatically mean that every detailed map is stored on the watch. For Polar watches that support offline maps, map files are downloaded through Polar Flow’s web service and transferred to the watch with a computer. Polar says basic maps for North America and Europe are pre-installed on the Grit X2, while more detailed country or regional maps can be downloaded separately. (Polar offline-map instructions)
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Download the region you need before leaving Wi-Fi or cellular coverage. If maps or routes appear to be missing after the firmware update, check the watch’s stored maps and repeat the relevant map-transfer or synchronization process. A major firmware update and a detailed-map transfer are different operations.

If the update does not appear or fails
No update is offered
- Confirm that the watch is one of the five OS 5 models.
- Synchronize again in Polar Flow.
- Update the Polar Flow app if necessary.
- Check Bluetooth permissions and the phone-to-watch connection.
- Try Polar FlowSync on a computer.
Availability may be staged by device or region, so eligible watches do not necessarily receive an update simultaneously. Polar’s support page will indicate when firmware is available for a device. (Polar firmware updates)
The update stalls
- Keep the watch connected to power if possible.
- Restart the Polar Flow app and phone.
- Reopen Flow and synchronize.
- Try FlowSync instead of the mobile update route.
- Do not disconnect the watch during installation.
- Contact Polar support if it remains stuck, repeatedly reboots or loses pairing.
A factory reset should not be the first response because it can create unnecessary pairing and data complications.
Dark mode is missing
First check the model: Polar explicitly excludes the Ignite 3 from dark map mode. If you own a Vantage or Grit X2-series watch and the option is absent, confirm that installation completed, synchronize once more and then contact Polar support if the setting remains unavailable.

Do not confuse OS 5 with the Polar Flow iOS update
Polar OS 5 runs on the watch. It is separate from Polar Flow iOS version 7.36.0, released on June 9, 2026, which added app-level features including session trimming, energy-source information for sessions recorded in the app and a dark theme for the iOS application. A dark Flow app does not mean the watch has dark map mode, and updating the watch does not turn the mobile app dark. (Polar Flow iOS 7.36.0)
Quick Recap
What OS 5 cannot do
- It does not add new hardware sensors, enlarge the display or change the watch’s underlying GPS and battery hardware.
- It does not provide dark maps on every compatible model.
- It does not turn a seven-reading SpO2 history into continuous monitoring.
- It does not turn Polar’s maps into a smartphone-style navigation system.
- It does not establish a quantified battery-life improvement for dark maps.
