Buy new if you value an unworn watch, an authorized purchase, and the applicable manufacturer warranty. Buy pre-owned if you want a specific earlier or discontinued reference—or prefer to shop the existing market—and can verify the individual watch, seller, and terms. Neither route is automatically cheaper, safer, or a better investment; the right choice depends on the exact reference and offer.
How to choose between a new and pre-owned luxury watch
Start with the watch you actually want, not a general rule about one category. Compare the same reference and configuration where possible. A current model bought new and an older, discontinued reference bought pre-owned may not be interchangeable choices.

Choose new if first ownership and current coverage matter most
- You want an unworn watch and the experience of buying through an authorized channel.
- The reference is currently available new, and you value the manufacturer warranty that applies to that purchase.
- You prefer not to assess a previous owner’s use, service history, or modifications.
Choose pre-owned if access to a particular reference matters most
- The reference or configuration you want is no longer in the current catalogue or is otherwise unavailable to you new.
- You are comfortable evaluating condition, originality, provenance, service records, and the seller’s written terms.
- You have compared the full cost—including tax, shipping, servicing, and any likely near-term work—not just the asking price.
Consider certified pre-owned on its specific terms
A named brand or retailer certification can set out an authentication and servicing process, but “certified pre-owned” is not one universal standard. Read what the program actually checks, who performs the work, what warranty it provides, and what exceptions apply. Compare that offer with other listings for the same reference rather than assuming certification is automatically safer or better value.
Compare the exact offers, not just “new” and “used”
Use these points to assess the particular watch and transaction. If two offers are for different references or configurations, account for that difference before comparing their prices.

- Reference and configuration: Confirm the model, reference number, and relevant details, and establish whether it is current or discontinued.
- Total price: Include taxes, shipping, servicing, and any work the watch may need soon. No general price-saving figure applies across luxury watches.
- Seller and remedy: Identify who is selling the watch, what authentication covers, and what remedy is available if the description is wrong.
- Condition and originality: Ask about the case, dial, movement, and replacement parts, along with wear, repairs, and any changes from the original configuration.
- History and included items: Review provenance and service documentation. Treat a box and papers as included items, not proof by themselves of authenticity or condition.
- Warranty: Find the provider, start date, duration, geography, covered faults, exclusions, and repair route in writing.
- Returns: Check the return period and conditions before paying, including any limits that matter if the watch is inspected after delivery.
- Personal priorities: Decide how much first ownership, an authorized purchase, or access to a particular earlier reference matters to you.
What warranty comes with a new or pre-owned watch?
Warranty terms vary by brand, program, country, seller, and purchase date. A seller’s own warranty is not the same as a manufacturer warranty, and an older watch may not have an active original warranty. Read the terms attached to the exact watch and sale; confirm who handles a covered repair and where it can be done.
Rolex terms are Rolex-specific
Rolex’s 2023 sustainability report states that new Rolex watches have a five-year guarantee and reconditioned and second-hand watches have a two-year guarantee. The current Rolex Certified Pre-Owned program separately says eligible watches receive a new two-year international guarantee from the date of sale. Other programs have their own eligibility and limits
Cartier’s UK warranty page describes a 24-month Official Pre-Owned International Limited Warranty for qualifying watches sold by an official pre-owned dealer, subject to eligibility conditions and exclusions. That page says warranty presentation is excluded in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Watchfinder says most watches covered by its Vacheron Constantin Certified Pre-Owned partnership receive a minimum 24-month international warranty; its terms limit coverage to manufacturing and mechanical defects and describe an exception for certain certified marketplace sellers. CHANEL’s US FAQ says its five-year watch warranty applies to watches purchased from October 1, 2022 onward, subject to its terms and proof of purchase. These examples are not interchangeable: confirm current local terms for the exact watch and seller.

What does Rolex Certified Pre-Owned include?
Rolex says eligible watches are at least two years old and sold by participating Official Retailers. They return to Rolex workshops, where the brand says their original configuration and components are checked and the watches are serviced and tested. The program provides a new two-year international guarantee from the sale date. Rolex also notes exceptions for some of its oldest watches concerning waterproofness and original precision, so read the stated condition and limits for the particular watch.

Rolex says only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch. Its CPO workshop process is a description of that program; it does not establish what another brand or independent seller checks. Rolex’s program details
How to check a pre-owned watch before buying
- Confirm identity. Match the stated brand, reference, and configuration to the watch being offered. Ask for clear documentation and an explanation of any differences.
- Ask who inspected it and what was checked. Find out whether the movement was examined, whether originality was assessed, and what the seller means by “authenticated.” Request the scope in writing.
- Review condition and service history. Ask for service records and details of replaced parts, repairs, or modifications. If the watch may need work, include that cost in your comparison.
- Read the warranty and return terms. Confirm the provider, coverage, exclusions, repair location, deadlines, and conditions for returning the watch.
- Check provenance and included items. Ask what documentation and accessories come with the watch, but do not treat box and papers alone as proof of authenticity.
- Compare the final price. Include taxes, delivery, service, and any work identified during inspection before deciding whether the offer suits you.
Service support is not the same as a warranty
For Rolex, the 2023 sustainability report says replacement spare parts are available for up to 35 years after a model ends, with specific parts manufactured as required after that period. Rolex’s current World Service page says parts and labour are assured for every watch for at least 35 years after catalogue withdrawal, and describes a two-year international service guarantee after maintenance at a World Service workshop. Those statements concern Rolex service, not a general promise for every luxury watch or a substitute for checking the warranty on a particular transaction.

Will a pre-owned watch cost less or hold its value better?
There is no reliable cross-brand figure here for pre-owned savings, depreciation, or investment returns. Price depends on the precise reference, condition, market, seller, and transaction costs; value can change over time. Do not choose either route on the assumption that a luxury watch is a sound investment or that buying pre-owned guarantees a lower price. Compare current offers for the same reference and treat future resale value as uncertain.
