Are gold watches solid gold?
No. “Gold watch” can describe a watch’s color or style as well as its material. It does not, by itself, establish that the case or bracelet is solid gold. Look for an explicit manufacturer specification identifying the component and its material; if the description says plated, capped, filled or gold-colored, it is not describing a solid-gold component.

What is the difference between a gold and platinum watch?
Gold and platinum differ in appearance and physical properties, but the exact comparison depends on the watch’s stated construction and alloy. The World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC) says watchmakers value platinum for its purity and density, and because it does not oxidise. That is the Council’s characterization, not a complete head-to-head test of every gold and platinum alloy or watch.

Why choose a platinum watch?
Platinum may appeal if you want its particular appearance and value the properties WPIC highlights: purity, density and resistance to oxidation. Density can contribute to a substantial feel, but the experience depends on the watch’s dimensions, bracelet and construction; a material label alone cannot tell you how a specific model will wear.
Availability is not limited to one maker. In a report published January 29, 2026, WPIC said Rolex, Chopard, A. Lange & Söhne, Vacheron Constantin, Chronométrie Ferdinand Berthoud, Cartier and Parmigiani had recently introduced platinum watches. This is a dated report, not a complete survey of the market.

The report describes a platinum version of Rolex’s Land-Dweller in 950 platinum, with a platinum case and bracelet, an ice-blue dial, and 36 mm and 40 mm sizes. Specifications can change; check Rolex’s current product information for the exact reference before relying on those details.
What do recent watch-industry figures show?
WPIC’s January 29, 2026 report gives two separate quarterly figures for Swiss watch hallmarking: it rose 28% year on year in the second quarter of 2025 and 3% year on year in the third quarter of 2025. These are distinct quarterly comparisons, not a single annual growth rate. The same report estimates European platinum jewellery fabrication grew 6% in 2025 and says global platinum jewellery demand rose 7% year on year to 2,157 koz, its highest level since 2018. Jewellery fabrication and demand are not measures of watch production or watch sales.
