In a watch movement, a “jewel” is usually a tiny synthetic ruby or sapphire that acts as a bearing, endstone, or escapement component—not a decorative gemstone. It gives moving parts a hard, wear-resistant contact surface, helping reduce friction and wear.
What are watch jewels made of?
Most modern movement jewels are synthetic ruby or sapphire. Both are forms of corundum; the material is chosen for its function in a movement, not for the rarity or jewelry value associated with a natural gemstone. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie explains the roles of watchmaking stones in its guide to stones in watchmaking, while Seiko Museum Ginza describes synthetic jewels used inside watches.
The word “jewel” can also refer to an actual decorative stone set in a watch case, crown, or dial. That is a different use: a movement jewel is a small engineered component, generally hidden inside the watch. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry notes that rubies used in movements were replaced long ago by synthetic sapphires; modern movement jewels are generally synthetic corundum rather than natural gems.
What do jewels do inside a watch?
Wheels, shafts, and the balance move against the movement’s plates and bridges. A jewel provides a hard, smooth surface at selected contact points, helping those interfaces withstand repeated motion. Lubrication is also used; jewels do not make a movement frictionless.

- Hole jewels: support pivots, including wheel and balance pivots, as they rotate.
- Cap jewels or endstones: bear against the ends of pivots. Some arrangements pair a hole jewel and cap jewel at the top and bottom of a shaft.
- Pallet stones: interact with the escape wheel as part of the escapement.
- Impulse pin: transfers motion through the escapement and is another jewel location identified by Seiko Museum Ginza.
These components perform different jobs, which is why a movement’s jewel count can include more than one kind of jewel. The placement and number vary with the movement’s architecture and complications.
Does a higher jewel count mean a better watch?
No. A jewel count tells you how many jewel components the movement maker counts; on its own, it does not establish accuracy, durability, finishing, service history, or overall quality. More jewels can reflect a different movement design or additional components rather than a higher performance level.

Published generalizations differ. Seiko Museum Ginza says that 17 jewels are generally enough for functionality and gives a 37-jewel Grand Seiko High Beat as an example. The Fondation Haute Horlogerie says a simple mechanical watch displaying hours, minutes, and seconds should in principle have at least 15 jewels at high-friction locations. These are source-specific descriptions, not a universal minimum or a ranking system.

A short history: drilled rubies and diamond endstones
The Fondation Haute Horlogerie attributes the first use of drilled rubies in watchmaking to Nicholas Fatio de Duillier in 1704. The Metropolitan Museum of Art describes Fatio’s 1704 petition, made in association with the Debaufre brothers, to drill gemstones for use as watch and clock bearings.
Not every historical jewel bearing was a ruby. The Met’s collection record for a Daniel Delander pair-case watch dated circa 1715–19 documents a half-drilled diamond endstone. It also notes that English watchmakers continued using jeweled endstones through the eighteenth century, while Swiss watchmakers adopted jeweled bearings more broadly later. This historical diamond example is distinct from the synthetic ruby and sapphire components generally used in modern movements.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Can you replace a watch jewel?
Yes, but a replacement must match the movement and the relevant jewel’s dimensions. A generic “watch jewel” is not guaranteed to fit a particular watch. For repair, identify the movement and have a qualified watchmaker determine the correct component and installation; the jewel’s function and location matter as much as its material.
