How do the watches tell time?
Lady Arpels Brise d’Été: butterflies as the indicator
The butterfly display is not simply decoration surrounding a conventional set of hands: the butterflies indicate the time as they move around the dial. The bespoke module animates the scene on demand, setting the enamel flowers in apparent motion as well. The result makes the complication part of the visual story and the act of reading the time.

Jour Nuit: a rotating day-and-night display
Both Jour Nuit models use a rotating display to evoke the passage from day to night. The larger Lady Arpels Jour Nuit pairs the scene with aventurine glass; the 33 mm Lady Jour Nuit uses a carved blue mother-of-pearl section. The 2024 report describes the two sizes and dial treatments, but does not give a more detailed account of how the indication is read.
What makes these Poetic Complications?
Van Cleef & Arpels describes Poetic Complications as a meeting of mechanical complications and artistic crafts, used to animate scenes inspired by nature, astronomy and love. The Maison says that research and development, collaboration between creative and technical teams, and careful assembly help translate concepts such as a blooming flower or the movement of planets into working dials. Rainer Bernard, the Maison’s Research and Development Manager, captures the idea this way: “The Poetry of Time is telling time by telling a story, and not just through the traditional means of watchmaking.”

The Maison also reports that its Lady Arpels Heures Florales won the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève Innovation Prize in 2022. That award is context for the Maison’s broader complications work; it was not an award for any of these three 2024 models.
