The STOWA Antea Back to Bauhaus 355 pairs a 35.5 mm steel case and hand-wound Peseux/ETA 7001 with a matte-black dial that departs sharply from the restrained look of the Antea Classic. In Worn & Wound’s 2015 review, Ilya Ryvin found that the unusual numerals and radial layout grew on him over several weeks of wearing it. That is his reported experience, not a hands-on assessment by WatchRanker. The published review describes a 6.8 mm-thick watch with 30 m water resistance; STOWA’s current Antea page shows Classic models but does not establish that the older Back to Bauhaus 355 is still available.
What the Antea Back to Bauhaus 355 is
The Back to Bauhaus 355 is a small, manually wound dress watch whose case keeps the classic Antea KS shape while its dial takes a more graphic direction. Worn & Wound reviewer Ilya Ryvin described the stainless-steel case as familiar in form, with a larger crown added to make winding easier. A sapphire display window in the six-screw caseback reveals the finished movement.
The model’s defining contrast is between a traditional, thin Antea case and a dial with bold, radial typography. Its nominal diameter is 35.5 mm, but Ryvin reported that the narrow bezel and elongated lugs made it wear slightly larger than that number suggests. He also found that its low profile slipped easily beneath a cuff.

How the dial differs from the Antea Classic
The Back to Bauhaus 355 replaces the Classic’s quieter presentation with a matte-black surface, white hands and markers, and Bauhaus STD numerals arranged radially around the dial. Small seconds sit above the six o’clock marker, while dotted scales mark minutes and seconds. The layout keeps the basic functions easy to locate, but its distinctive type and spacing make the dial feel more expressive than a conventional dress-watch face.
Ryvin identifies Bauhaus STD as a typeface designed by Ed Benguiat and Victor Caruso in 1975, based on Herbert Bayer’s earlier typeface. He initially found the redesign a substantial departure, but reported that it grew on him after several weeks of handling and wearing the watch. That gradual change in impression is central to the design’s appeal: it is not simply a monochrome version of the Classic, but a watch whose typography asks for a closer look.

Where the design fits in Antea history
STOWA traces the Antea’s inspiration to around 1937. Its account says the simpler dials associated with that period appeared after the Bauhaus school closed in 1933; it credits dial-maker Arthur Weber with drawing on contemporary fashion and everyday patterns. Weber & Baral supplied dials to STOWA and Lange & Söhne. This history supports a Bauhaus-influenced design context, not a claim that the school itself designed the original Antea.
STOWA says it reissued the 1937 original as the Antea Classic in 2004, then worked with designer Hartmut Esslinger on the Back to Bauhaus modernization in 2015. Esslinger described the brief this way: “It had to be a cool interpretation of both the original design by Lange & Söhne (1937) and the Antea by STOWA (1937). I left the stainless steel case of the Antea Klassik.”

Is the Back to Bauhaus 355 still available?
STOWA’s current indexed Antea page presents Antea Classic 365 and 390 variants and describes a 35.5 mm hand-wound Classic KS with a Peseux 7001. It does not confirm that the Back to Bauhaus 355 itself remains for sale, so the Classic KS should not be treated as the same model. The page displayed ranges of €1,200–€1,430 for the Classic 365 and €1,200–€1,440 for the Classic 390 when checked; prices can change and may depend on configuration.
If you are looking specifically for the black-dial Back to Bauhaus 355, verify the exact model name and current stock with STOWA or a seller before purchasing. A listing for an Antea Classic or another Antea variant is not evidence that the 355 is available.

Who should consider this design?
- Consider it if you want a compact, slim, hand-wound dress watch and prefer distinctive typography over a restrained dial.
- Check fit carefully if you choose watches by diameter alone: the reviewer found the narrow bezel and longer lugs gave this 35.5 mm model a larger wrist presence.
- Look elsewhere if you want automatic winding, a conventional dial layout, or a model whose current price and availability are confirmed by STOWA’s present Antea listing.
- Keep its water rating in perspective: the reviewed specification is 30 m, so this is a dress watch rather than a choice for swimming or water sports.
For a buyer weighing the Back to Bauhaus against another watch, useful points of comparison are lug-to-lug fit, thickness, hand-wound versus automatic operation, small versus central seconds, dial legibility, and verified current price and warranty. The available information does not support a factual head-to-head verdict against a specific competitor.
