Protecting them takes preparation, careful handling, and a clear plan for what to do after the trip. There is no established evidence here that luxury businesses experience a uniquely high rate of mobile attacks; the relevant guidance applies to business and high-profile travellers more broadly.
Why a travel phone can put business information at risk
A compromised or exposed handset may become a route into organizational information and networks, not just a lost piece of hardware. Official Canadian guidance lists threats including phishing and targeted spear-phishing, network spoofing, adversary-in-the-middle attacks, ransomware, and signal jamming. Attackers may also exploit Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, intercept communications, track location, or activate a device’s microphone or camera.

The risk is physical as well as digital. Someone nearby may see a screen, or an unattended device may be accessed. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security warns: “Users should assume that there is no privacy in offices, hotels, Internet cafes, or other public areas.” Its guidance notes that in some countries hotel business centres and phone networks are monitored and rooms may be searched; this is not a claim that every hotel or destination is monitored. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, Mobile devices and business travellers (ITSAP.00.087), modified October 23, 2024.
High-profile travel calls for an organization-specific assessment, not assumptions based on wealth or industry. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security advises organizations to consider the traveller’s profile, the event, and the destination when assessing risk. Its high-profile traveller guidance recommends considering a separate travel device when risk is significant and says organizations should advise against using personal devices for business during travel. Canadian Centre for Cyber Security, Mobile device guidance for high-profile travellers (ITSAP.00.088), modified April 1, 2025.

Choose the device and information that need to travel
Consider a dedicated travel device
For trips assessed as higher risk, ask IT or security staff whether to use an organization-issued or temporary device with only the accounts and applications needed for the trip. This can limit the information and access exposed if the device is lost, inspected, or compromised. It is not a substitute for secure configuration or careful handling.
Weigh the trade-offs of a personal phone
BYOD—using a personally owned device for work—offers convenience and remote access, but creates organizational security risks and employee privacy concerns. NIST’s BYOD guidance describes approaches such as separating work and personal information, using mobile-device management, vetting applications, and applying firewall, VPN, or mobile threat-defense capabilities. The appropriate setup depends on the organization’s policy and privacy protections; the guide’s illustrative approach is not a product endorsement or a guarantee of regulatory compliance. - Carry only the devices required for the trip.
- Remove unnecessary business data and applications before departure, following your organization’s retention and device policies.
- Use the approved work environment for sensitive information rather than keeping extra copies on the device.
Prepare the phone before departure
Complete setup while you still have access to your organization’s support team and recovery methods. NIST’s mobile-device security guidance treats deployment, use, and disposal as connected parts of device security, covering both organization-provided and personally owned devices. - Confirm the travel plan with IT or security. Ask whether the destination, event, or traveller profile calls for a separate device, restrictions on work access, or specific reporting steps.
- Update the operating system and applications. Install approved security updates before travel and confirm that the device is supported by your organization’s security tools.
- Back up important information. Make sure a current backup is available through an approved method so the organization can recover work if the device is lost or wiped.
- Enable multifactor authentication (MFA). Protect work accounts with the organization-approved method, and confirm you can complete sign-in if your usual device or network is unavailable.
- Encrypt sensitive information and use approved security tools. Follow organizational requirements for encryption, endpoint protection, VPN access, and device management. A VPN is one control, not a guarantee that a device or connection is safe.
- Limit administrator privileges. Use a standard account for routine activity where policy permits, and avoid changing security settings to make travel use more convenient.
- Review radios and location access. Disable Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or location features when they are not needed, consistent with work requirements and policy.
- Know how to report a problem. Save the organization’s incident-reporting contact and know what to do if the device is lost, behaves suspiciously, or may have been accessed.
Use the phone carefully while traveling
- Keep it physically controlled. Do not leave it unattended in a hotel room, meeting area, vehicle, or public workspace. Use a privacy screen if it helps limit shoulder surfing, while recognizing that it only reduces visual exposure.
- Be cautious with networks. Avoid unknown or public Wi-Fi for sensitive work. Use the organization’s approved network and VPN process where required; do not treat a VPN as protection against phishing, malware, or an already compromised device.
- Be selective about connections and peripherals. Avoid connecting to unknown Bluetooth devices or untrusted accessories, and follow organizational guidance before using unfamiliar charging or data connections.
- Watch for unexpected behavior and requests. Treat unusual sign-in prompts, unexpected messages, or suspicious device performance as possible warning signs. Report concerns promptly rather than troubleshooting by weakening security settings.
- Reduce screen exposure. Keep sensitive conversations and information out of view in public settings. A privacy screen protector may help with shoulder surfing but does not address network attacks, phishing, malware, location exposure, account security, or device management.
What to do when you return
- Report concerns and follow the organization’s return procedure. Tell IT or security about a lost device, suspicious behavior, unexpected prompts, or any situation in which the phone may have been accessed.
- Have the device checked before reconnecting it to work systems. Follow organizational instructions for scanning or otherwise assessing the device before it is allowed back onto work networks.
- Change credentials when warranted. If policy calls for it, or you suspect that credentials were exposed, change the affected passwords and follow the organization’s account-recovery process.
- Review the trip with security staff. Share any incidents or unusual circumstances that could affect the organization’s response, and complete any required device reset or data-handling steps.
Canadian high-profile traveller guidance includes post-trip scanning, incident reporting, password changes, and response to suspected compromise among its operational measures. The exact steps should follow the organization’s policy and the circumstances of the trip.
