Quartz watches generally keep time more accurately and need a battery replacement from time to time. Automatic watches use a mechanical mainspring wound by wrist movement; they can stop when left unworn, and their movements need periodic attention. Neither type has one universal accuracy, service interval, or lifetime cost: compare the specifications and service terms for the particular watch you are considering.
How the two movements keep time
Quartz: battery-powered timekeeping
A quartz watch uses a battery to power its timekeeping system. Longines says battery life varies by watch, with a typical range of one to five years. The battery is a recurring ownership task, but the movement generally offers higher accuracy than a mechanical one, according to Longines’ movement comparison.

Automatic: a wound mechanical movement
An automatic watch is mechanical. Wrist movement winds its mainspring, which stores energy to run the watch. If the watch is set aside long enough for its power reserve to run down, it stops and must be wound and reset before use. The reserve and winding instructions depend on the movement; check the watch’s manual.

Quartz generally wins on accuracy, but exact performance is model-specific. Mechanical watches can gain or lose time at different rates depending on conditions and use. Seiko identifies temperature, position, shock, and the mainspring’s winding state as factors that can affect a mechanical watch’s rate. It advises assessing a watch’s average performance over about a week to ten days rather than judging it from a single day. See Seiko’s guidance on mechanical-watch accuracy.

For an automatic, keeping the mainspring sufficiently wound can help stabilize accuracy. Seiko’s guidance recommends wearing an automatic for more than eight hours a day and also recommends daily winding to improve accuracy, including for self-winding watches. These are manufacturer recommendations, not a guarantee that every watch will meet a particular rate; follow the instructions for the specific movement. The Grand Seiko instructions for caliber 9S86, for example, give caliber-specific accuracy targets and service instructions rather than a universal standard.
What daily ownership involves
| Ownership question | Quartz | Automatic |
|---|---|---|
| What powers it? | A battery; replacement is eventually needed. | A mechanical mainspring wound by movement. |
| What happens if left unworn? | It continues to run while its battery has power. | It stops after its power reserve runs down. |
| What recurring attention is typical? | Battery replacement and any service specified for the model. | Winding or regular wear, plus movement service recommended for the model. |
| What most distinguishes the experience? | Convenient timekeeping with a battery task when needed. | A mechanical movement that involves winding and can stop when set aside. |
Magnetism is not a reason to assume quartz is immune to interference. Seiko says magnetism can affect mechanical watches and may also affect the motors in analog quartz watches. Its magnetism guidance explains the issue for both types.

How often do watches need service?
Service intervals are recommendations, not a single rule for every watch. Longines suggests servicing automatic watches about every three to five years. Seiko generally recommends examination, cleaning, and oiling about every three years, while noting that climate and owner care can affect the interval. For a specific Grand Seiko caliber, the cited 9S86 instructions recommend inspection and overhaul at approximately three- to four-year intervals. Use the maker’s guidance for the actual watch rather than treating any of these intervals as universal.
Water resistance is a separate concern from movement type. Seiko notes that aging gaskets or a shock can affect water resistance and recommends regular checks. A quartz movement does not inherently mean a watch is more water-resistant than an automatic one; check the model’s rating and care instructions. See Seiko’s service and water-resistance guidance.

What do battery replacement and service cost?
Published prices illustrate why costs should be checked by brand, model, service type, and region instead of inferred from movement type. Longines’ US service-price page lists the following prices in US dollars; tax and shipping are excluded, and prices may change without notice:
| Longines US service | Partial service | Full service |
|---|---|---|
| Quartz, two- or three-hand | $100 | $250 |
| Mechanical, two- or three-hand or small complication | $120 | $380 |
| Battery service | $30 | Not stated |
These are Longines’ listed US prices, not a market average or a calculation of lifetime ownership cost. The page does not establish a recurring schedule or total cost for every model. Check Longines’ US service prices for current terms and confirm the price for the watch you own.

Which type should you choose?
- Choose quartz if you prioritize generally higher accuracy and straightforward everyday use, and are comfortable replacing the battery when required.
- Choose automatic if you value a mechanical movement and do not mind wearing or winding the watch to keep it running, as well as budgeting for movement service.
- Compare specific models if price, accuracy, water resistance, or service access is decisive. Check each maker’s stated accuracy, recommended care, and local service pricing rather than relying on a category-wide assumption.
The mechanical character of an automatic is a matter of preference, not evidence that it keeps better time or costs less to own. Longines likewise frames the choice partly around whether the wearer prefers the traditional mechanical mechanism or the convenience of quartz.
