The official US listings include several 30.0 mm references that differ in dial, finish, bracelet and displayed functions. Compare the reference number before treating any specification or price as applying to the watch you are considering.
What is the Rado DiaStar Original 30mm?
It is Rado’s contemporary 30 mm DiaStar Original collection. The cited official US product pages describe automatic models with modern materials and features, while Rado’s user manual traces the DiaStar 1 (The Original) to 1962. Rado says it introduced that predecessor as its scratch-resistant watch; that heritage does not mean the current watches use the same case material or construction.
The current examples combine stainless steel and, depending on the reference, Ceramos or other finish details with faceted sapphire crystal. Rado describes the cited crystals as having an anti-reflective coating. The specific combination varies by model.
What are the specifications of reference R12170113?
R12170113 is one specific example, rather than a stand-in for every 30 mm DiaStar Original. Rado’s official US listing gives it the following specifications:

The same movement and 48-hour reserve are listed for the cited 30 mm examples, but check the page for the exact reference before relying on a detail.
How do the 30 mm references differ?
The differences are visible in the dial and finish, and can extend to functions and bracelet details. Rado’s official US listings identify these examples:

Other listed dial colors include red. Do not transfer the day-and-date function, bracelet system, or finish from one reference to another without confirming it on that model’s product page.
What should you check before choosing one?
- Reference and function: Confirm whether the selected model displays the date or both day and date.
- Dial: Compare the color, surface pattern and applied crystal markers in the exact variant.
- Materials and finish: Check the case, bezel and bracelet description; steel, Ceramos and colored finishes vary across references.
- Bracelet fit: Confirm the bracelet configuration and how it can be sized or adjusted for your wrist.
- Price and stock: Check the current page for your region and the exact reference. In search results, Rado’s US page for R12170113 showed $1,800, while another reference showed $2,200; those are time-sensitive observations, not current or family-wide prices.
Rado lists 10 bar (100 metres) water resistance for the cited references. That rating alone does not establish suitability for a particular activity, and an older watch should not be assumed to retain its rating without inspection.

How does the current watch relate to the 1962 DiaStar?
Rado’s user manual says it introduced the DiaStar 1 (The Original) in 1962 as its scratch-resistant watch. The modern 30 mm watches carry the DiaStar name and heritage, but their listed construction—such as Ceramos, stainless steel, sapphire crystal and the R586 automatic calibre—is contemporary. The historical claim is Rado’s own account.
