Rado HyperChrome 1616: A 46 mm ’70s-Inspired Watch in Ceramic or Titanium

The Rado HyperChrome 1616 stands apart with a 46 mm ’70s-inspired design, offered in black ceramic or hardened titanium. Here’s what the 2018 review and Rado’s titanium-edition specifications establish.

The Rado HyperChrome 1616 is an unusually chunky, 46 mm watch that leans into a ’70s-inspired dive-watch shape rather than Rado’s better-known sleek ceramic minimalism. Felix Scholz’s 2018 Time+Tide review called it “unashamedly large and funky”; the two versions he discusses pair that striking form with either black ceramic or hardened titanium. Both are described as using an automatic movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve, though some specifications apply specifically to the titanium limited edition.

What makes the HyperChrome 1616 distinctive?

Its proportions and silhouette are the point. At 46 mm, the HyperChrome 1616 is a conspicuous, substantial watch, with the retro, chunky character Scholz described as “straight up funk.” It is a left-field choice for someone who associates Rado chiefly with refined, streamlined ceramic designs. The 46 mm case size is cited in Scholz’s 30 June 2018 review; it should not be mistaken for a smaller, understated everyday watch.

Scholz’s “funky” description is an editorial judgment, not a formal Rado category. His review presents the watch as a ’70s-inspired dive-watch design, not as a claim that it is a historically faithful reissue.

HyperChrome 1616 ceramic or titanium?

The review discusses two material directions: black ceramic and hardened titanium. Its visual distinction is straightforward: Scholz characterizes the ceramic version as more contemporary and the titanium one as more retro. The evidence provided does not establish that every specification is shared between the versions.

Version What the cited sources establish
Black ceramic Time+Tide describes a black ceramic case and a more contemporary look. The review’s 2018 Australian launch price was A$3,925. It does not establish the titanium edition’s limited-edition count or its other edition-specific specifications for this version.
Hardened titanium Time+Tide describes a more retro appearance and says the treatment made the titanium four times harder than steel; that comparison is the reviewer’s claim, not an independently tested result in the cited material. Rado’s historical press specifications identify a 1,616-piece limited edition, with day/date at six o’clock, 100 m water resistance, dimensions of 46.0 × 45.5 × 13.7 mm and a brown vintage leather strap. The review’s 2018 Australian launch price was A$3,450.

Those prices are Australian launch prices reported in 2018, not current quotes or evidence of present resale value. Neither current availability nor current market value is established by the cited sources.

How is the ceramic case made?

Scholz’s review describes Rado’s ceramic process as beginning with ceramic feedstock and a polymer binder. The material is injection moulded, sintered at about 1450°C, then brushed and polished. That account helps explain why the ceramic option is more than a surface coating: the case material and its finishing are central to its appearance.

The review characterizes ceramic as lightweight and very hard. These are descriptions in the 2018 article, rather than independent comparative measurements supplied alongside the account.

Movement and titanium-edition specifications

Scholz says the 1616 uses a modified ETA movement with up to 80 hours of power reserve. Rado’s historical press material specifies the ETA C07.621 and up to 80 hours for the titanium limited edition. The maker’s model-specific details for that edition are:

Who is the HyperChrome 1616 for?

Choose the HyperChrome 1616 if you want an oversized, deliberately unusual Rado and are comfortable with a 46 mm case presence. Ceramic offers the black, contemporary direction; the titanium limited edition has the more retro presentation and the edition-specific specifications listed above. If you are seeking a compact, discreet watch, the case size alone is a reason to look elsewhere.

For a purchase, treat the 2018 review as historical context, not a listing: it does not establish whether either version is currently sold or what either should cost now. Owners considering a replacement brown leather strap should confirm the exact watch reference with Rado or a qualified dealer before ordering; strap compatibility across all 1616 references is not established here.
