The most important tip is to identify which glasses you own before trying a feature. Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses are primarily camera-and-audio wearables: they capture photos and video, play open-ear audio, handle calls and messages, and answer many Meta AI requests aloud. Meta Ray-Ban Display adds a private in-lens display for notifications, captions, navigation, visual overlays, and selected interactions.
Once the glasses are paired with the Meta AI mobile app, updated, and given the right permissions, the most useful workflow is simple: use voice for hands-free control, use look and… prompts for visual questions, use the physical button when voice is inconvenient, and treat every feature as model-, country-, language-, account-, age-, and software-dependent.
What these glasses can do in 2026
Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta HSTN, and Oakley Meta Vanguard can combine a first-person camera, open-ear speakers, microphones, touch controls, and spoken Meta AI. They can be useful for quick documentation, hands-free calls, music, reminders, visual questions, and short interactions that would otherwise require taking out a phone.
Meta Ray-Ban Display belongs in a separate category. It keeps the camera and audio functions but adds a selective display in the lens. That makes notifications, walking directions, captions, translations, previews, and small amounts of information glanceable instead of audio-only. It is not simply a more expensive version of ordinary Ray-Ban Meta glasses, and display-specific features should not be assumed to work on Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta models.
Availability is especially important in 2026. A feature may depend on the model generation, the country where the glasses are used, supported language, iPhone or Android version, Meta account settings, age eligibility, Early Access enrollment, or a gradual software rollout. The instructions below describe the practical feature patterns, not a promise that every account will show every option.
First: prepare the glasses for advanced features
Do the basic setup before troubleshooting Meta AI. Pair the glasses with the Meta AI mobile app, make sure Bluetooth is enabled, keep the phone nearby, and install available updates for both the app and the glasses. Then open the device-specific settings in the app and review the following items:

- LISTEN WITH OPEN-EAR AUDIO — Listen to music and more with discreet open-ear speakers that deliver rich, quality audio without blocking out conversations or the ambient noises around you.
- ASK YOUR GLASSES ANYTHING WITH META AI — Get real-time suggestions, answers, object identification, and reminders hands-free. Requires Bluetooth connection to your smartphone and the Meta AI app. Ensure your phone has internet connectivity.
- Voice: enable voice control and check the wake-word setting.
- Hey Meta: turn on hands-free wake-word detection if you want to issue commands without pressing a button.
- Meta AI: confirm that the assistant is available for your account and region.
- Camera and microphone: grant the phone app the permissions it needs for setup, importing captures, and AI features.
- Notifications: decide which phone notifications may be announced or shown on a connected display.
- Communication services: connect the phone, Messenger, WhatsApp, or other supported services before asking the glasses to contact someone.
- Connected apps: review available music and identification integrations, including Spotify or Shazam where supported.
- Software updates: check for updates manually if a feature described in the app or release notes is missing.
Most functional voice commands are available in English, French, and Italian, but that does not mean every Meta AI capability works identically in all three languages. Meta’s Ray-Ban documentation describes Meta AI assistance as English-only in its FAQ. Regional availability and language support should therefore be checked in the app rather than inferred from the wake word alone.
The best voice-command patterns
Meta supports natural-language variations, so do not assume one exact sentence is mandatory. Clear command patterns are more useful than memorizing a long list of scripts. Start with the wake phrase, state one action, and name the person or service when ambiguity is possible.

| Goal | Example command | What must already be ready |
|---|---|---|
| Take a photo | “Hey Meta, take a photo.” | Camera permission, charged glasses, and a connected phone for importing or sharing |
| Start video | “Hey Meta, start recording.” | Available storage and the camera capture function |
| Call someone | “Hey Meta, call Jamie.” | Phone and calling permissions; the contact must be identifiable |
| Choose a messaging service | “Hey Meta, call Jamie on WhatsApp.” | The named service must be connected and supported for the account |
| Send a message | “Hey Meta, send a message to Jamie.” | Messaging permissions and a contact or service the glasses can resolve |
| Control playback | “Hey Meta, pause.” or “Hey Meta, next.” | Audio must be playing through a connected device or service |
| Check battery | “Hey Meta, how much battery is left?” | Powered-on glasses; the response may distinguish glasses from case status |
| Set a timer | “Hey Meta, set a timer for five minutes.” | Voice control and the relevant assistant function enabled |
If a command fails, changing the wording repeatedly is usually less productive than checking Bluetooth range, phone permissions, the connected service, and the relevant app setting. Voice control is not a substitute for those prerequisites.
Use the camera with “look and…” visual AI prompts
The most useful pattern for camera-based AI is “Hey Meta, look and…” followed by a specific task. The glasses can use their camera to interpret what is in front of the wearer and return an answer through the speakers. Depending on the feature and model, the user can also capture an image first and ask Meta AI about that image afterward.
- “Hey Meta, describe what I’m seeing.”
- “Hey Meta, tell me about this monument.”
- “Hey Meta, translate this sign into English.”
- “Hey Meta, summarize this page.”
- “Hey Meta, what kind of plant is this?”
- “Hey Meta, what am I looking at?”
Specific questions generally produce more useful results than a vague request. For example, ask the glasses to identify the main ingredients on a menu, summarize a short sign, or describe the direction of a visible landmark rather than simply saying, “What is this?”
Camera-based AI requests may send an image to Meta’s cloud for processing before returning an audio answer. That makes the feature dependent on connectivity and also means it deserves the same privacy consideration as uploading an image to an online service. Treat the result as assistance, not proof. Verify important translations, directions, plant identifications, health information, and safety-related interpretations. Do not rely on visual AI as a substitute for professional advice or a reliable emergency system.

Turn the glasses into a hands-free camera
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 is listed with a 12MP ultra-wide camera, video capture up to 3K at 30 frames per second, and 1080p options up to 60 frames per second. Manufacturer-listed battery figures reach up to eight hours under stated conditions, with additional capacity in the charging case. Those figures do not apply automatically to first-generation Ray-Ban Meta, optical variants, Oakley models, or every recording pattern.
Better capture habits
- Use the physical capture button when speaking aloud would be awkward, when the environment is noisy, or when you want a more deliberate trigger.
- Use a natural point of view. These are wearable cameras, so the framing follows the direction of your head rather than the precision of a phone held at arm’s length.
- Say what should happen next. A command such as “take a photo and send it to Jamie” can be convenient when the recipient and connected service are already configured.
- Import before editing or sharing. The Meta AI app is the normal place to transfer captures, review them, and continue the sharing workflow.
- Check the model and app before assuming capture limits. Recording length, resolution, social sharing, and available workflows can vary by generation and software version.
The external capture LED is intended to signal photo, video, or livestream capture. Its behavior during newer camera-based AI operations can differ by model and software version; older first-generation hardware may illuminate the LED during certain AI features. Do not describe the LED as a universal privacy guarantee or assume that every AI interaction has exactly the same indicator behavior as a saved video. Follow local law, venue rules, workplace policy, and reasonable social expectations as well.
Make calls and messages work before you need them
Hands-free communication is one of the most practical reasons to use these glasses, but it works best when configured in advance. Connect the phone and grant the required permissions for calls, contacts, notifications, Messenger, WhatsApp, and any other service you intend to use. Then test a call and a message while the phone is within Bluetooth range.

Supported workflows can include announcing messages, reading messages aloud, answering or rejecting calls by voice, and calling or messaging a named contact. If the same person exists across several services, name the provider explicitly: “Call Jamie on WhatsApp.” This reduces ambiguity and is more reliable than expecting the glasses to infer which service you meant.
On iPhone, duplicate call announcements can occur when both Siri and the glasses are configured to announce calls. Disable one announcement path if the repetition becomes disruptive. For message privacy, avoid automatic readout in crowded or shared spaces; a notification that seems harmless to the wearer may reveal personal information to everyone nearby.
Meta Ray-Ban Display extends communication with visible incoming notifications, call information, silent replies using neural handwriting, and real-time captions for supported calls. These display-specific options should not be presented as capabilities of standard Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta glasses.
Control music, identify songs, and hear better in noise
Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta use open-ear audio, so the wearer can hear music, calls, and assistant responses while remaining more aware of surrounding sound than with sealed earbuds. Playback can be controlled through touch gestures or voice commands such as “pause,” “resume,” “next,” “volume up,” and “volume down.” Actual behavior depends on the connected phone and media service.
To identify music, connect Shazam through the Meta AI app’s Connected apps settings where the integration is available. The documented command patterns include “Hey Meta, use Shazam” and “Hey Meta, what’s this song?” A connected service and an internet connection may be required, and the option may not appear for every account or region.

It also introduced a Spotify experience that can use Meta AI to identify or select music based on what the wearer is seeing. These are software features subject to rollout and version availability, not guaranteed functions on every pair of glasses. Use them as conveniences, not as hearing protection or a replacement for a safe level of environmental awareness.
Newer AI features: useful, but not universal
Meta has been adding multimodal and productivity features beyond one-shot questions. Official announcements describe live AI, which allows a wearer to ask about their surroundings in real time, along with newer or rolling-out functions such as nutrition tracking, WhatsApp summaries and recall, and additional personalization.
The safe way to think about these features is: your model, region, account, age, and software version determine what you actually receive. A feature mentioned in an announcement may be in Early Access, limited to a particular country, or arriving gradually. If it is missing, check the Meta AI app and update status before assuming the hardware cannot support it.

Nutrition tracking deserves extra caution. The announced availability covers adults aged 18 and over in the United States using Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses, with Meta Ray-Ban Display availability planned later in the rollout. A food log or AI-generated suggestion can be convenient, but it is not medical-grade nutritional advice. People managing allergies, diabetes, eating disorders, or another medical condition should verify information with a clinician or registered dietitian.

Which glasses support which tricks?
| Model | Best fit | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Ray-Ban Meta | Everyday photos and video, spoken Meta AI, calls, messages, music, and casual hands-free help | Camera-and-audio glasses; no in-lens display. Gen 2 has the newer published camera and battery figures. |
| Oakley Meta HSTN | Commuting, running, hiking, golf, and everyday performance use | Supports open-ear audio, camera capture, Meta AI, live translation, navigation, and sport integrations. Oakley lists an IPX4 rating. |
| Oakley Meta Vanguard | Higher-intensity training and outdoor use | Wraparound design, a center-mounted 12MP camera, stronger open-ear speakers, Garmin and Strava integration, and an IP67 rating. Do not transfer Vanguard’s rating to every Oakley Meta model. |
| Meta Ray-Ban Display | Wearers who specifically want glanceable information in the lens | Adds notifications, guided walking navigation, captions, visual overlays, previews, and Meta Neural Band input. It is materially different from audio-only models. |
Ray-Ban Meta: the general-purpose choice
Choose Ray-Ban Meta when your priority is a familiar frame with hands-free capture, audio, calls, messaging, and spoken AI. Ray-Ban lists multiple frame styles, lens choices, prescription-compatible optical models, and voice and touch controls. Gen 2 is the version to examine if higher-resolution video and a longer stated battery figure matter, but first-generation owners should not expect every Gen 2 specification or AI behavior to transfer backward.
For most buyers, Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are the clearest starting point because they combine the broadest everyday use cases in one product category. Confirm the exact generation, frame, lens, and regional availability before buying.
Oakley Meta HSTN: performance without making it an action camera
Oakley Meta HSTN is a natural fit for running, hiking, commuting, and golf. The model combines open-ear audio and camera-based AI with sport-oriented integrations, including Garmin and Strava where supported. Its listed IPX4 water-resistance rating is not the same as full waterproofing, so sweat and light exposure should not be turned into a promise that the glasses are suitable for submersion or every weather condition.
Oakley Meta Vanguard: the more protective sports option
Oakley Meta Vanguard is positioned for higher-intensity training and outdoor use. Its wraparound design, center-mounted 12MP camera, stronger open-ear speakers, Garmin and Strava integrations, and IP67 water-and-dust rating make it the more specialized choice of the two Oakley models discussed here. IP67 is a Vanguard specification; it should not be generalized to Ray-Ban Meta or Oakley Meta HSTN.
Meta Ray-Ban Display: choose it for information in the lens
If the reason you want smart glasses is to avoid pulling out a phone for small pieces of information, Meta Ray-Ban Display is the relevant model. Its display can show selected notifications, schedule and weather information, navigation guidance, translations, captions, and image previews. It can also support message interaction through neural handwriting and input from the Meta Neural Band.
The display is selective rather than a miniature phone screen. Not every smartphone app appears in the lens, and the display is not necessarily active at all times. Availability of widgets, connectivity options, and interactions remains feature-dependent.
Display-only productivity tricks
On supported Meta Ray-Ban Display setups, glanceable widgets can provide schedule, weather, stocks, and calendar information without a phone being raised. Meta’s comparison materials also describe Google Calendar and Outlook connectivity. These features are most useful when the wearer needs a quick answer, not when they need to read or edit a long document.
- Check the next calendar item before leaving a meeting or starting a commute.
- Use guided walking navigation for glanceable directions while keeping attention on the environment. Continue to use normal road and pedestrian safety practices.
- Turn on captions for supported phone, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram Direct voice calls.
- Preview a captured image before deciding whether to share it.
- Use neural handwriting for a discreet reply when speaking aloud or touching the frames is inconvenient.
- Try subtle Neural Band wrist gestures where supported, but keep voice and touch controls available as a fallback.
Display features are not a replacement for a phone in every situation. A selective notification surface can reduce interruptions, but it cannot guarantee that every incoming app alert, message thread, or navigation situation will be visible.

Accessibility uses to test carefully
Meta has documented one-touch shortcuts on Ray-Ban Meta Optics styles and Oakley Meta Vanguard. A shortcut can contact a Be My Eyes volunteer or launch a custom Meta AI prompt, such as asking the glasses to describe the surroundings. Meta Ray-Ban Display also has documented real-time captions for supported phone, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram Direct voice calls.
These tools may help people with low vision, hearing loss, mobility limitations, or memory-related challenges, but they should be treated as assistive options rather than clinically validated outcomes. Test the setup with the wearer’s actual lighting, noise, network, support contacts, and safety plan. For urgent situations, keep a conventional backup method available.
If you use a custom prompt for accessibility, make it specific and repeatable. For example, ask for a concise description of obstacles, text, or the location of a named object. Still verify critical information, especially around traffic, stairs, unfamiliar places, medication, and other safety-sensitive situations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Battery and charging tips
Ray-Ban’s FAQ says the glasses charge only when docked in their charging case, while the case charges through USB-C. Under the stated charging conditions, the manufacturer lists approximately 75 minutes for a full glasses charge and approximately 22 minutes to reach 50 percent. Battery life varies by generation, optical style, camera use, calls, audio volume, voice assistance, AI processing, temperature, and network conditions.
Published “up to” figures include approximately four hours for original Ray-Ban Meta under moderate use, up to eight hours for Gen 2, and more than eight hours for some Gen 2 optical styles. These are not fixed runtimes. Continuous recording, frequent visual AI requests, long calls, loud audio, cold temperatures, and weak connectivity can all reduce practical endurance.
- Dock the glasses whenever you are not wearing them.
- Check that the nose bridge and charging contacts are seated correctly.
- Keep a USB-C cable available for the case.
- Clean the contacts gently if the glasses do not appear to charge.
- Check the case’s own charge before assuming the glasses have failed.
- For a long day, reduce unnecessary continuous recording and keep the case with you.
When replacing or adding equipment, search for a model-compatible charging case or a USB-C cable and verify the exact generation and product line. Do not assume that a charging case is interchangeable across every Ray-Ban Meta, Oakley Meta, and Display model.
Systematic troubleshooting when “Hey Meta” fails
- Check power. Confirm that the glasses are switched on and have charge.
- Check the wake-word setting. In the Meta AI app, verify that Voice and Hey Meta are enabled for the specific device.
- Check Bluetooth range. Keep the phone nearby and confirm that the glasses appear connected.
- Check the environment. Reduce background noise and look for the expected wake sound or white LED response.
- Check permissions. Review microphone, camera, notifications, contacts, phone, Messenger, WhatsApp, and Meta AI permissions as appropriate.
- Update both sides. Install available Meta AI app and glasses software updates.
- Use in-app microphone troubleshooting. If the app provides microphone adjustment or troubleshooting controls, follow that flow.
- Restart the normal way. Restart the glasses and phone before moving to more disruptive fixes.
- Unpair and re-pair. Use this after the simpler checks fail, because it removes an existing connection and requires setup again.
- Factory-reset only as a last resort. A reset can delete captures and require complete re-pairing. Import anything important first.
If calls work but AI does not, focus on Meta AI availability, language, account eligibility, internet access, and camera or microphone permissions. If AI works but messages do not, focus on notification permissions and the connected communication service. Separating the symptom this way is faster than repeatedly changing the wake phrase.
Privacy, recording, and social etiquette
Tell people when you are recording if local law, venue rules, workplace policy, or social expectations make notice appropriate. Avoid recording in sensitive spaces such as changing rooms, medical settings, private offices, or other places where people reasonably expect privacy. Never use visual AI to process confidential documents or another person’s personal information without permission.

Someone may not understand what the light means, and camera-based AI operations may have different indicator behavior from ordinary saved photo or video capture depending on the model and software version.
Best Value
- Get the most out of the moment with iconic Ray-Ban style and technology by Meta. Now featuring frames for a broader range of face shapes.
- Never miss a beat—ask Meta AI to take photos or videos, unearth information, create clever image captions or check out FAQ’s.
- Video call hands-free and share your POV so others can feel like they’re right there with you whether you’re cooking, watching a game or sharing core memories.
- Capture your world with an updated camera and built-in edit features. Take high-quality photos and videos hands free or livestream your point of view.
- Discreet open-ear speakers let you enjoy rich audio quality, music and calls without losing the ambient sounds of your surroundings.
Camera-based AI can involve cloud processing, and data handling is governed by Meta’s privacy practices and the settings available in the app. Meta’s current FAQ distinguishes some newer-model AI handling from shareable photo and video captures and states that facial recognition is not used. Those statements should not be stretched into a blanket promise about retention, processing, or future features. Review the current in-app privacy controls and Meta’s current privacy documentation before using the glasses around sensitive information.
Buying guide: match the feature to the wearer
- Choose Ray-Ban Meta for everyday camera, audio, calling, messaging, and spoken AI features in a conventional eyewear style.
- Choose Gen 2 if the newer published camera resolution, 3K video option, or longer stated battery figure is important to you.
- Choose Oakley Meta HSTN for an everyday performance-oriented design with sport integrations and an IPX4 rating.
- Choose Oakley Meta Vanguard for a more intensive outdoor and training use case, its wraparound design, and IP67 water-and-dust resistance.
- Choose Meta Ray-Ban Display only if in-lens notifications, navigation, captions, previews, or Neural Band interaction are central to the purchase. Spoken AI alone does not require the Display model.
- Choose an optical or prescription configuration if the glasses need to replace ordinary eyewear, but confirm prescription limits and availability in your country before ordering.
Prices, inventory, lens availability, and rollout status can change quickly. Check the exact frame, generation, prescription compatibility, charging arrangement, return policy, and regional feature list immediately before buying. If a retailer listing says “AI glasses” without naming the model, do not assume it has a display, the same camera, or the same water-resistance rating as another product in the range.
Accessories that make sense
Useful ownership accessories include a model-compatible replacement or protective charging case, a USB-C cable and power adapter, prescription lenses, a lens-cleaning cloth, and a compatible carrying or protective case. Compatibility is the key qualification: a third-party case or cable listing should identify the exact model and charging design, and it should not be described as official unless the listing proves that claim.
For prescription wearers, look for prescription Ray-Ban Meta glasses or the corresponding official Ray-Ban or Oakley optical configuration and confirm that your prescription and geography are supported. Lens options are not necessarily identical across frames, generations, or countries.
Quick-start checklist
- Pair the glasses in the Meta AI app.
- Update the app and glasses firmware.
- Enable Voice and Hey Meta if hands-free control is wanted.
- Grant only the camera, microphone, contacts, notification, and service permissions you actually need.
- Test one photo, one spoken playback command, one call, and one visual AI request.
- Connect Messenger, WhatsApp, Spotify, Shazam, or other supported services before relying on them.
- Learn the physical capture button as a fallback.
- Set notification readout conservatively for shared spaces.
- Dock the glasses in the charging case after use.
- Check the model-specific privacy, water-resistance, battery, and display limitations before taking them outdoors.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta glasses have a display?
Ordinary Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta models are primarily camera-and-audio glasses with spoken responses. Meta Ray-Ban Display is the separate model designed to provide in-lens notifications, captions, navigation, previews, and other visual information.
Can visual Meta AI work without an internet connection?
Camera-based visual questions may send an image to Meta’s cloud for processing, so connectivity and account availability can matter. Do not assume that a visual prompt will work offline.
Are Oakley Meta HSTN and Vanguard waterproof?
Do not generalize the ratings. Oakley lists IPX4 for HSTN and IP67 water-and-dust resistance for Vanguard. Neither rating should be turned into a blanket claim that every Oakley Meta model is waterproof or suitable for submersion.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What should I do before factory-resetting the glasses?
Import any captures you want to keep, confirm that you know the Meta AI account details, and try power, Bluetooth, permissions, updates, restart, and re-pairing checks first. A factory reset can delete captures and require the glasses to be paired again.
The Bottom Line
Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta are most useful when treated as hands-free camera, audio, communication, and spoken-AI tools. Meta Ray-Ban Display is the choice for information in the lens, captions, navigation, and Neural Band interaction. Set up permissions first, use clear voice patterns, verify visual answers, respect recording privacy, and check model- and region-specific availability before relying on any advertised feature.
