The Raymond Weil Freelancer Calibre RW1212 is an automatic two-hand watch whose defining feature is an opening at 6 o’clock that reveals its balance assembly. This review focuses on the grey-dial, two-tone 42 mm model listed in the United States as reference 2781-STP-60051—not every watch carrying the RW1212 name. Its official specifications include a 41-hour power reserve and 100 m water resistance; Raymond Weil’s US page listed it at $2,995 on October 7, 2026.
Which Raymond Weil Freelancer RW1212 is this?
RW1212 is used across multiple Freelancer configurations. The model discussed here is the grey-dial version with a two-tone steel bracelet, reference 2781-STP-60051, on Raymond Weil’s US product page. Other RW1212 versions have different finishes, dials, or case shapes, so the reference matters when comparing specifications or prices.
Raymond Weil’s US listing identifies this configuration as 42 mm. Earlier specialist coverage describes some prior configurations at approximately 42.5 mm, and one cited measurement gives 50.5 mm lug-to-lug. Those historical measurements may concern different references or conventions; they should not be substituted for the current listing’s 42 mm case diameter.
What the open dial shows
The opening at 6 o’clock exposes the regulating organ—the balance and spring assembly that governs the movement’s rate. Raymond Weil says the RW1212 caliber was developed in collaboration with Sellita and describes a bridge supporting that exposed assembly. The brand also notes a Côtes de Genève motif on the movement’s oscillating weight.

- DIVE INTO LUXURY: Immerse yourself in the depths of style with the Raymond Weil Freelancer Diver. This timepiece combines rugged functionality with sophisticated elegance.
- SWISS PRECISION: Powered by the reliable RW4200 automatic movement, ensuring accurate timekeeping for every adventure.
- BOLD DESIGN: The 42.5mm stainless steel case with a black ceramic bezel and rose gold accents exude a masculine and sporty aesthetic.
- SUPERIOR READABILITY: The luminous dial and hands provide excellent visibility in low-light conditions, whether you're exploring the ocean depths or the city streets.
- UNCOMPROMISING DURABILITY: Water-resistant to 300 meters, this watch is built to withstand the harshest environments and the most thrilling water sports.
This is an open-heart display, not a full view of the movement: the watch retains a dial with indexes and a two-hand hours-and-minutes display. The aperture gives the dial a mechanical focal point, while the indexes and hands carry the time display. Whether that balance of visual interest and simplicity suits you is a matter of taste; the visual descriptions here reflect the manufacturer’s account, not an independent hands-on assessment.

How the proportions and features translate to a buying decision
Fit and wrist presence
The official dimensions—42 mm across and 10.9 mm thick—give a useful starting point, but they cannot establish fit on every wrist. The available current specification does not state lug-to-lug length, and the older 50.5 mm figure should not be assumed to apply to this reference. If fit is decisive, try this exact reference on or confirm its dimensions with the seller before ordering.
Dial character and readability
The opening makes the movement part of the dial’s visual design. That can appeal if you want a visible mechanical detail; a more uninterrupted dial may be preferable if you prioritize a conventional, visually quiet display. The listing establishes indexes and two hands, but does not provide independent legibility testing.

Movement and winding routine
Raymond Weil specifies a 41-hour power reserve. That is the manufacturer’s stated reserve, not an independently measured result. If you leave the watch unworn long enough to run down, it will need winding and resetting before use; the listing does not claim a longer reserve or a particular timekeeping performance.
Water resistance and construction
The screw-down crown and stated 100 m rating offer a higher published water-resistance figure than many dress-oriented watches, but the rating alone does not establish suitability for every activity or the condition of an individual watch. Follow the manufacturer’s use and maintenance guidance, and have seals checked as appropriate, particularly for a pre-owned example.

Bracelet and finish
The listing specifies a stainless-steel bracelet with yellow-gold PVD plating on the case and a folding clasp with a double push-security system. The available material does not establish how the bracelet feels, how the coating wears over time, or the quality of adjustment on the wrist; those are points to assess on the exact watch in person.

Quick Recap
Who should consider this Freelancer?
- Consider it if you want an automatic two-hand watch with a visible balance assembly and the grey-and-gold look of this specific configuration.
- Check fit first if 42 mm is near the limit of your preferred case size; the current listing does not establish lug-to-lug length.
- Compare alternatives in person if dial simplicity, bracelet comfort, coating durability, or movement performance is central to your decision. The published information does not provide independent comparative testing on those points.
- Confirm local support before purchase if warranty coverage or service access is a deciding factor; terms were not established for every region or seller.
