The Ressence Type 9 IKE pairs the brand’s orbital time display with a dial made by Japanese artist Terumasa Ikeda. Its layered urushi lacquer and mother-of-pearl inlay were composed for the display’s motion, rather than added as a static decoration. Limited to eight pieces, it is a compact 39 mm watch whose appeal lies in the interaction between its unusual way of showing time and painstaking surface craft.
What makes the Type 9 IKE different?
On the Type 9, time is shown by rotating discs rather than conventional hands sweeping across a fixed dial. Ressence’s ROCS 9 display moves the hour and minute indications around the dial, while the minute scale is engraved on the fixed bezel. That motion gives Ikeda’s artwork an active role: its patterns shift in relation to the indications as the display turns.
Ressence describes the IKE as an artwork conceived specifically for this moving surface, not an existing illustration applied to a watch. The convex display is decorated with layers of urushi lacquer and fine raden fragments—raden being mother-of-pearl inlay. Because the surface curves, the thin shell pieces must be gradually bent and placed by hand. The result brings together a traditional Japanese decorative technique and a distinctly contemporary display.
Ikeda describes the meeting of eras as a paradox: “Within a single watch, the past and future co-exist, almost creating a paradox.” Ressence founder Benoît Mintiens characterizes the visual effect as “the feeling of viewing something from another galaxy – a code, or signal, from another civilisation, beamed back to us from the future.” Both quotations appear on Ressence’s Type 9 IKE page.

How the orbital display reads
The Type 9 IKE is designed to show hours and minutes, keeping the display more restrained than models that add further indications. The rotating discs carry the time markings, while the fixed bezel provides the minute index. Reading it is therefore different from glancing at a conventional dial: the viewer follows the moving indications against a stationary reference.
This movement is also central to the IKE’s visual concept. As the discs rotate, the artwork and time display continually change their relationship. The watch is consequently best understood as both a time display and a moving composition, rather than as a traditional dial with decorative artwork surrounding fixed hands.

Ressence’s Type 9 collection page also describes the model as 39 mm and 39 g, with hours-and-minutes indication and winding and setting at the caseback. Those are collection-level details; the cited edition-specific launch reports do not independently confirm every one for the IKE. Monochrome additionally reports a domed sapphire crystal and a 20/18 mm horse-leather strap with titanium buckle.
Is it suitable for everyday wear?
The 39 mm case and hours-and-minutes-only display make the Type 9 IKE relatively compact in concept as well as in diameter. Its 10 m water-resistance rating, however, is a splash-resistance specification, not a reason to treat it as a swimming watch. The hand-finished lacquer and shell dial, eight-piece production run and unusual display also make it a highly specialized object rather than a conventional all-purpose sports watch.

Its reading style is a matter of preference: the rotating indications and moving artwork are the point, but they are not the most traditional route to an instant glance at the time. The IKE is most compelling for someone drawn to the mechanics and visual effect of that orbital display as much as to the decorative technique.

FHH lists an indicated price of CHF 32,000. Monochrome reported the same CHF 32,000 price excluding taxes and availability from 26 February 2026. A Japanese release announcement published on 2 March 2026 said the watch would be released in Japan in early March; that regional schedule should not be read as a universal release date. Neither launch-era statement establishes present-day stock or a current transaction price.
