Revisiting the Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition: 37mm or 41mm?

The Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition pairs an automatic movement and 80-hour stated reserve with a bidirectional compass bezel. Here’s how the 37mm and 41mm blue references differ—and what to know about availability now.

The Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition adds a bidirectional compass bezel to the familiar automatic field-watch formula. Its appeal depends on whether you want that approximate sun-based orientation aid, which case size suits your wrist, and whether you can find a particular reference at a price and condition you trust: Hamilton currently marks the two blue-dial references covered here as past collection.

What makes the Khaki Field Expedition different?

The Expedition is an automatic Khaki Field with a two-way rotating bezel marked for compass directions. That gives it a distinctive tool-watch function without turning it into a dedicated magnetic compass or a complete navigation system. The bezel is most useful as a rough orientation aid when the Sun is visible; it cannot replace a map, GPS, magnetic compass, or navigation skills.

The dial also departs from the familiar Khaki Field layout: the Expedition removes the inner 13–24-hour numerals and uses an arrow-shaped hour hand. Fratello’s launch coverage judged the result less cluttered and more legible, a subjective assessment rather than a universal finding. The overall design remains recognizably field-watch practical, with a brushed steel case and luminous markers.

37mm or 41mm: how to choose

The smaller option is not simply the larger watch shrunk at the dial. Launch coverage gives the 37mm model an approximate 44mm lug-to-lug length, compared with about 48mm for the 41mm. Both sizes have a 20mm lug width. Case diameter and lug-to-lug length affect how much wrist the watch occupies; wrist shape and the visual presence you prefer matter too.

Blue-dial reference Case diameter Lug-to-lug Thickness Lug width
H70225540 (37mm) 37mm (Hamilton specification) Approximately 44mm (launch coverage) 11.45mm (Hamilton specification) 20mm (Hamilton specification)
H70315540 (41mm) 41mm (Hamilton specification) Approximately 48mm (launch coverage) 11.5mm (Hamilton specification) 20mm (Hamilton specification)

Fratello’s revisit author found the 37mm versatile and easy to slip under a cuff, and described the 41mm as comfortable. Those are personal fit impressions, not rules for every wrist. GearJunkie’s Sean McCoy reported comfortable wear of the 41mm on a 6.75-inch wrist; one wearer’s experience does not predict another’s. Hodinkee also noted that both sizes wear more easily than the older Khaki Field Mechanical’s long-lug profile.

If possible, compare the Expedition’s diameter and lug-to-lug length with a watch you already find comfortable. A watch’s stated diameter alone does not show how its lugs will sit on your wrist.

Specifications of the two blue-dial references

Hamilton’s official pages list the following specifications for the 37mm H70225540 and 41mm H70315540. Both use the H-10 automatic movement, have an 80-hour stated power reserve, sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown, Nivachron and Super-LumiNova, and are rated to 10 bar (100m). See Hamilton’s 37mm H70225540 specification page and 41mm H70315540 specification page.

The 37mm page specifies an open case back and anti-reflective coating; the 41mm page lists those features as well. Hamilton lists the 37mm’s supplied leather strap as reference H6000001591, cow leather with an 18mm pin buckle. That buckle width is not the same as the watch’s 20mm lug width.

An 80-hour stated reserve means the watch can, in principle, run for more than three days off the wrist when fully wound. That is useful if you rotate watches, but it is a specification, not a promise about an individual watch’s accuracy. GearJunkie reviewer Sean McCoy reported that his watch lost a little more than a minute over seven days of regular wear in his own use; this was an individual observation, not a controlled accuracy rating or a guarantee of typical performance.

How to use the compass bezel

The basic method described by Fratello and GearJunkie is intended for the Northern Hemisphere and requires visible sunlight:

  1. Hold the watch level.
  2. Point the hour hand toward the Sun.
  3. Rotate the bezel until “S” sits halfway between the hour hand and 12 o’clock.
  4. Use the bezel’s “N” marking as an approximate indication of north.

This is a rough sun-based orientation trick, not a precision bearing. It depends on geography and usable sunlight, and the result can be affected by how accurately you point the hand and set the bezel. Use appropriate navigation tools and judgment when direction matters.

How it compares with the Seiko Alpinist

Hodinkee calls the Seiko Alpinist the Expedition’s most obvious comparison. In the cited Alpinist version, the compass markings are on an internal bezel, whereas the Expedition’s compass bezel rotates on the outside and is operated directly. Hodinkee characterized the Hamilton as more rugged in appearance; that is a design opinion, not a specification.

Decision point Hamilton Khaki Field Expedition Seiko Alpinist cited by Hodinkee
Compass bezel External, bidirectional bezel Internal compass bezel
Water resistance 10 bar / 100m for the two Hamilton references discussed (Hamilton specifications) 200m for the cited version (Hodinkee)
Movement and reserve H-10 automatic; 80-hour stated reserve (Hamilton) Not stated in the cited comparison
Launch-period price $995 on strap (Hodinkee, 2023); €1,115 on leather (Fratello, 2023) $725 (Hodinkee, 2023)

Those prices are historical launch figures, not current offers or a reliable guide to today’s secondary market. For a real purchase comparison, check the exact Alpinist variant as well as the Hamilton reference, then weigh fit, bezel preference, movement and servicing preferences, strap or bracelet configuration, and verified current price and availability. The cited sources do not establish current street prices for either watch.

Is the Expedition worth considering?

It makes the most sense for someone who wants an automatic field watch with a long stated reserve, sapphire crystal, 100m water resistance, and a compass-style bezel—and who likes the design enough that the bezel is a bonus rather than a substitute for proper navigation gear. The two case sizes give buyers distinct fit choices, not just a small change in dial scale.

The trade-offs are equally concrete: the bezel’s directional use is approximate, and the launch positioning was around $1,000. More importantly for anyone shopping now, Hamilton labels both blue references discussed here “Past collection”; its US page for the 41mm also says “Not available online.” That describes Hamilton’s cited pages, not every retailer’s stock or the secondary market. Check the exact reference, condition, seller, and return terms before buying. GearJunkie suggests considering less expensive quartz field watches such as Vaer or Bertucci if the priority is taking a watch into severe abuse without risking a more expensive piece; those alternatives are not presented as specification-for-specification equivalents.
