Its oversized outer minute numerals, smaller red inner hour ring and angled layout make the historical reference functional as well as distinctive. RGM dates the Ferguson dial’s patent to 1908 and the Ferguson Dial Company’s organization to 1911; those dates are the maker’s account of the design’s history.
What makes the Ferguson dial different?
The dial gives minutes visual priority. Large numerals mark the outer minute track, with the most prominent figures at five-minute intervals; a smaller ring of red numerals identifies the hours. The minute hand reaches the outer track, while the shorter hour hand points toward the inner ring. RGM says the hour hand is red to match the hour numerals.
RGM’s 2025 announcement quotes a description attributed to Railway Master Mechanic from July 1913: “The feature of the dial is the arrangement of the dial marking. The minutes appear in large figures on the outer circumference of the dial, while the hours are shown in smaller figures on the inner dial. To further facilitate easy and accurate reading, the hour figures and the hour hand are colored red.” The quote captures the design’s practical intent: distinguish hours from minutes at a glance.
The railroad-era story, as RGM tells it
RGM attributes the dial to Louis Buck Ferguson of Monroe, Louisiana, and says he patented the design in 1908 before selling it to the railroad industry. According to the manufacturer, after limited market tests he organized the Ferguson Dial Company in Monroe in 1911, and O’Hara Dial Company in Waltham, Massachusetts, made the first dials. These historical details are RGM’s account; the sources cited here do not independently establish them through patent or company records.

The Model 222-RR is not an antique railroad watch. It is RGM’s present-day interpretation of the dial, paired with a vintage Hamilton movement and contemporary case construction.
Why is the crown at 1:30?
The dial is rotated, putting the crown at roughly 1:30 rather than the conventional 3 o’clock position. RGM describes the angle as a reference to early wristwatch layouts and says it preserves the intended relationship between the railroad-style dial and the small-seconds register. The manufacturer also says it can make a left-handed version with the crown at 10:30.

- 30M Water resistant

The unusual orientation changes how the watch sits and how the dial meets the eye. Worn & Wound’s independent review praised the dial’s legibility but noted that the wearing position takes some getting used to; that is the reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee of how every wearer will find it.
Movement options and current listed prices
RGM offers the watch with a rebuilt Hamilton 10-size pocket-watch movement in either grade 921 or grade 923. The manufacturer lists the movements as manually wound and running at 18,000 vibrations per hour. RGM describes the rebuilding as including a new mainspring and hand-polished steel parts, so the movement should not be described as entirely original vintage.

RGM calls the 923 rare and says fewer than 4,000 were manufactured. That is the maker’s claim. The higher jewel count does not, by itself, establish better timekeeping or better value.
