What is the Richard Mille RM 033?
Richard Mille introduced the RM 033 in 2011 under the name “Automatic Extra Flat.” It pairs a round, tripartite case with the brand’s openworked movement architecture. The design challenge was to make an automatic round watch notably thin while retaining a visible, skeletonised mechanical calibre.
Contemporary coverage appeared in TechCrunch’s April 20, 2011 article, “Richard Mille RM 033 Watch Hands-On”. The accessible passage describes the watch as 6.30 mm thick and discusses the round case and its relationship to the brand’s case styling. That is period editorial coverage, not a report of measurements or handling for this article.
How thin is the original RM 033?
Richard Mille lists the case at 45.70 mm in diameter and 6.30 mm thick. The RMXP1 movement measures 33.00 mm across and 2.60 mm thick. Those figures describe separate components: the watch is 6.30 mm thick, not 2.60 mm. The manufacturer specifies water resistance of 30 meters.

What movement does it use?
The RM 033 is powered by the RMXP1, an automatic, skeletonised calibre with hours and minutes. Richard Mille describes its off-centre monobloc rotor as solid platinum and bi-directional, meaning it winds the movement in both directions.
The manufacturer states that the calibre has 29 jewels, beats at 3 Hz, and provides a 42-hour power reserve. Its balance is free-sprung with variable inertia and four adjustable weights. Richard Mille’s product page says: “The caliber RMXP1, with 29 jewels and beating at 3Hz, has a free sprung balance with variable inertia.” These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results.

The baseplate, bridges and balance cock are titanium; the baseplate receives Titalyt treatment and the bridges have black PVD. The case is tripartite, with integrated lugs, two nitrile O-ring seals, 16 grade 5 titanium spline screws and 316L stainless-steel washers, according to Richard Mille.
How does the RM 033 differ from the RM 33-02 and RM 33-03?
The RM 33-02 and RM 33-03 are later watches, not alternate names for the 2011 RM 033. Their specifications should not be transferred to the original.

Richard Mille presents the RM 33-02 as a 2020 reinterpretation of the first ultra-thin round watch, the RM 033. The RM 33-02 page identifies its RMXP1 movement and describes the Carbon TPT and red-gold case construction for the version shown. The RM 33-03 page specifies a different calibre, RMXP3, and a thicker 9.7 mm case. It adds small seconds and a date to the hours and minutes. The RM 033’s 6.30 mm case and RMXP1 details belong to the original model.

Richard Mille’s historical product page is the primary source for the original model’s specifications. Those figures remain manufacturer claims. Phillips’ 2023 Hong Kong auction catalogue documents an RM 033 example measuring 45.7 mm across and records accompanying papers and presentation materials. That catalogue entry establishes a documented auction example; it does not establish current availability or a present market value.
