The Richard Mille RM 11-03, introduced in 2016, succeeded the RM 011 with a redesigned tonneau case and a more prominent, layered display of its RMAC3 automatic movement. Its flyback chronograph, countdown timer, date and month indications carry forward a complex mechanical brief; the facelift is chiefly expressed through the case and movement’s visual presentation. This is a design and specifications overview, not a hands-on review.
What changed from the Richard Mille RM 011 to the RM 11-03?
Richard Mille dates the RM 11-03 to 2016 and describes it as the successor that made way after the RM 011, a model the brand says had been a fixture of its collection since 2007. The company framed the update as a restyling: modernized lines and a sportier, more dynamic character, with the RMAC3 movement presented in a more distinctly three-dimensional way. Those are the manufacturer’s design aims, rather than independent assessments of the watch’s reception or performance. Richard Mille’s RM 11-03 model page
The shift is visible in the case and in how the movement is displayed. Richard Mille describes a reworked tripartite tonneau case and a more layered presentation of the skeletonized mechanism. Contrasting finishes and colored counters help separate elements that would otherwise compete for attention.
Details that define the facelift
- Glossy bevelled rims frame the colored flyback and seconds counters.
- A satin-brushed grade 5 titanium upper bridge contrasts with PVD-treated titanium components.
- The satin-brushed, PVD-treated lower bridge draws attention to the double-barrel arrangement and variable-geometry rotor.
- The brand says the rotor’s lines take inspiration from aerodynamic appendages in Formula 1.
In a retrospective Richard Mille Magazine article, Theodore Diehl characterizes the RM 11-03 as the first major change to a timepiece introduced about a decade earlier. That is brand-published editorial framing, not an independent measure of the RM 011’s popularity. Diehl’s article also presents Richard Mille’s own explanation of the earlier model’s architectural approach:

“To make space for the winding system with its variable-geometry rotor, we enlarged the case of the RM 004 and RM 008 significantly in creating this new model of chronograph, an automatic version of its predecessors. These new dimensions prompted me to take the radical architectural concept and 3D mechanical aspect—both characteristic of the brand—to their logical limits. It was the skeletonised, pared-down structure of the mechanism that enabled us to showcase this aesthetic. We enhanced the ergonomics with grooved, non-slip pushers. The concave striations of the crown also helped me accentuate the tension in the use of space defined by the watchcase. Each component constitutes an aesthetic expression of its functionality,”
This is Richard Mille’s retrospective account of the RM 011’s design, not a description based on an inspection of the RM 11-03. Richard Mille Magazine

What does the RM 11-03 flyback chronograph do?
The RMAC3 is an automatic, skeletonized movement. In addition to hours, minutes and seconds, Richard Mille lists a flyback chronograph, a 60-minute countdown timer at 9 o’clock, a 12-hour totalizer, an oversized date, a month indicator and a variable-geometry rotor. The countdown timer and chronograph functions give the display more to do than simply record elapsed time, while the date and month provide calendar information.
RMAC3 specifications, as stated by Richard Mille
- Winding: automatic, with a variable-geometry rotor.
- Chronograph: flyback, with a 12-hour totalizer.
- Timer: 60-minute countdown indication at 9 o’clock.
- Calendar: oversized date and month indicator.
- Movement materials: grade 5 titanium baseplate and bridges.
- Barrels and reserve: two barrels; around 55 hours of power reserve, according to the manufacturer.
- Balance: free-sprung, with a stated frequency of 4 Hz.
Richard Mille says the titanium baseplate and bridges are intended to support rigidity and gear-train function. The company describes the side-by-side barrels as providing stable coupling and says the free-sprung balance is resistant to shocks and can be adjusted more precisely than a traditional balance wheel. These are manufacturer descriptions and specifications; they should not be read as independently tested findings or a guarantee of real-world accuracy or durability. What is different about the RM 11-03 McLaren edition?
Introduced by Richard Mille and McLaren Automotive at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, the RM 11-03 McLaren was their first jointly commissioned timepiece. The 500-watch limited edition was developed in close collaboration with McLaren Design Director Rob Melville. Its documented distinction is its materials and automotive-inspired design, not a different movement specification: Richard Mille lists the RMAC3 and the same core chronograph and calendar functions for the edition. What the available specifications do—and do not—establish
The official descriptions identify the model’s design, movement functions and selected construction details, but they do not establish a current price, whether either version remains in production, market stock, or authorized Amazon availability. Nor do the cited sources provide independent timing, durability or wear-test results. A buyer assessing a particular watch should verify its exact variant and provenance with an appropriate seller or specialist; the historical model specifications alone cannot confirm an individual watch’s condition or authenticity.
