What is new about the RM 16-02?
The RM 16-02 revisits the rectangular design of the RM 016, which Richard Mille introduced in 2007 as its first rectangular model. The new watch pairs that shape with a movement developed for the model: the CRMA9, a skeletonized automatic calibre displaying hours and minutes. Richard Mille describes the design as Brutalist, pointing to its straight lines and monolithic structure; that is the brand’s own framing.
The February 2025 release presents the RM 16-02 in grade 5 titanium or in a Terracotta Quartz TPT interpretation. It also describes the watch as 10% smaller than its predecessor, a brand-reported comparison for which the release does not explain the measurement method.

A 30-metre rating is the published specification; it is not, by itself, activity guidance for swimming or diving.

How the CRMA9 works
The CRMA9 is an in-house automatic movement designed for the RM 16-02. Its openworked construction makes the movement part of the watch’s visual design: the dial indices trace a thread-like path over the skeletonized components. Richard Mille’s February 2025 release says the baseplate has 67 openings.
Winding and balance
The movement uses a platinum rotor with a OneWay winding system and ceramic ball bearings. Its free-sprung balance has variable inertia. Richard Mille lists a CuBe balance with four arms and four adjustment screws, an AK3 balance spring, and Incabloc 908.22.211.100 shock protection.

Materials and testing
The baseplate and bridges are grade 5 titanium. Richard Mille says the baseplate and structural elements undergo aging and shock-resistance testing; this describes the brand’s stated process, not an independent durability assessment. The February 2025 release called the CRMA9 the 15th and latest addition to the brand’s in-house movement family at that time.
Case materials and design
Grade 5 titanium
The titanium interpretation has a microblasted and satin-finished surface with polished bevels, according to the February 2025 release. The case uses a tripartite construction and 12 grade 5 titanium spline screws.

Terracotta Quartz TPT
The alternative pairs Terracotta Quartz TPT with a Creamy White Quartz TPT caseband. The release describes 45-micron silica threads stacked at an angle and processed with heat and pressure to form the composite case material.
Across the two interpretations, the design remains rectangular and architectural. The openworked movement and thread-like indices carry the visual concept through the face rather than concealing the mechanics behind a conventional solid dial.
