What is the Richard Mille RM 35-02?
Richard Mille dates the RM 35-02 to 2016 and names it the Automatic Rafael Nadal. Its official model page identifies calibre RMAL1, an automatic skeletonised movement displaying hours, minutes and seconds, and a variable-geometry rotor. See the official RM 35-02 model page.
The model’s name covers two case-material and appearance options: Carbon TPT and red Quartz-TPT with white highlights. Richard Mille’s published description does not establish a movement or performance difference between those versions.
How do the Carbon TPT and red Quartz-TPT versions differ?

Richard Mille says red Quartz-TPT is made from silicon-fibre layers no thicker than 45 microns, with the fibre direction rotated 45° between layers. The layers are then heated under pressure at 120°C. The brand says the natural white quartz fibre is left undyed and claims a high resistance-to-weight ratio, hypoallergenic properties and UV resistance. These are the manufacturer’s process and material statements, not independent test findings. The brand also states that the material can withstand accelerations up to 5,000 g; that figure should likewise be understood as a manufacturer claim, not an independently established result.

What movement and rotor does the RM 35-02 use?
The RM 35-02 uses the automatic RMAL1 calibre. Richard Mille describes its rotor as variable-geometry and says the design was chosen to let winding be adjusted to the wearer’s activities. That is the manufacturer’s explanation of its design rationale; it is not an independent finding about winding performance.
How is the RM 35-02 different from the RM 35-03?
The rotor distinction is important: Richard Mille describes a variable-geometry rotor for the RM 35-02, while its later RM 35-03 Automatic Rafael Nadal page describes a butterfly rotor. The butterfly rotor belongs to the RM 35-03; it should not be attributed to the RM 35-02.

What should you check when buying a pre-owned RM 35-02?
Assess the individual watch rather than relying on its model name, case material or an auction description. Christie’s listing for a red Quartz-TPT RM35-02 “RAFA” warns that lots are sold as-is and that condition reports may not disclose mechanical replacements or defects. Its listing is an example-specific auction notice, not a current price guide or evidence of live availability. Read the Christie’s listing and sale conditions for the relevant lot.
