Making a watch by hand is a demanding craft project; making one that may legally be described as “Swiss Made” adds a separate challenge: meeting specific Swiss origin rules. The phrase is not just a decorative label, and the 60% Swiss production-cost threshold is only one part of the test.
Why the project is more than assembling a watch

That is useful context for the idea behind the series, but it does not establish the original article’s detailed history, the people involved, where work took place, or which movement and components were planned. Those specifics should not be inferred from the title alone.
At a practical level, watchmaking involves more than putting purchased parts together. Making components, inspecting fine work and assembling parts to close tolerances call for specialist knowledge and careful tools. A watchmaker’s loupe can help with close inspection, but it is only one tool; it does not replace the broader equipment, training and skill involved in watchmaking.
What “Swiss Made” means for a watch
Swiss origin claims for watches are governed by watch-specific rules alongside Switzerland’s broader Swissness legislation. The revised watch ordinance took effect on 1 January 2017, according to the Swiss Federal Council’s 17 June 2016 announcement. The Swiss government’s overview of regulated Swiss symbols and labels describes a requirement that at least 60% of a watch’s production costs be generated in Switzerland, together with further conditions.

This is a plain-language summary, not a substitute for the ordinance itself; the official government guidance and applicable legal text govern whether a particular watch qualifies.
Can you make your own Swiss Made watch?
In principle, an individual can pursue the craft of watchmaking, but whether a resulting watch qualifies as “Swiss Made” depends on its actual production details and compliance with the applicable rules. Personal involvement or hand assembly alone does not establish eligibility. A maker would need to account for the relevant Swiss production costs and satisfy the other requirements, including those concerning the movement, research and development, assembly and inspection.
