The practical choice turns on what you value most: the Explorer’s black 3-6-9 layout and luminous display, or the SBGH279’s grey 44GS-style design and additional specifications.

The comparison concerns the discontinued 39 mm Explorer reference 214270, not the current Explorer. Rolex says the Explorer grew to 39 mm in 2010 and returned to 36 mm in 2021; the 214270-specific identification and movement details below are from Fratello’s January 2021 matchup.
How the cases fit on the wrist
Explorer 214270: a 39 mm case
Fratello identifies the 214270 as the 39 mm Explorer generation introduced in 2010 and revised in 2016. The sources cited here do not establish its full thickness or lug-to-lug length, so a direct fit comparison based on case diameter alone would be incomplete.
SBGH279: a 40 mm case with a 46.2 mm case length
Grand Seiko lists the SBGH279 at 40 mm in diameter, 13.3 mm thick and 46.2 mm in case length, with a 19 mm lug width. Those measurements describe the case, but wrist shape and bracelet adjustment still affect how it wears. If possible, try both references on wrist rather than choosing by diameter alone.

Dial design and legibility
Explorer: high-contrast simplicity and luminous indications
The Explorer’s black dial, 3-6-9 numerals and luminous indications put legibility ahead of visual complexity. That is the clearer advantage when checking the time in darkness: the luminous display can be read without ambient light.
SBGH279: faceted surfaces, without glow in complete darkness
The SBGH279 uses a grey dial with faceted hands and markers. Fratello’s reviewers describe the dial as shifting in appearance from grey toward brown or black as the light changes, and praise the polished facets. These are subjective observations, not controlled tests. The hands and markers do not glow in complete darkness, so reflections that help in daylight do not replace luminous material at night.
Movements and everyday functions
Explorer 214270: calibre 3132
Fratello identifies the 214270’s automatic movement as Rolex calibre 3132 and gives it a 48-hour power reserve. The comparison also reports a blue Parachrom hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers and a stated accuracy of −2/+2 seconds per day. These are reference-specific figures reported in that 2021 article, not the specifications of a current Explorer.
SBGH279: high-beat calibre 9S85
Grand Seiko lists the automatic 9S85 at 36,000 beats per hour, with 37 jewels, a 55-hour power reserve and static accuracy of +5 to −3 seconds per day. The accuracy figures use different terminology and conditions from the figures Fratello reports for the Rolex. They should not be treated as a like-for-like ranking of how two individual watches will perform on the wrist.

The SBGH279 adds a date display; the Explorer keeps the dial to time alone. Grand Seiko also lists a screw-down crown, sapphire display caseback, dual-curve sapphire crystal and 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance for the SBGH279. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results.
Design heritage and strap options
The SBGH279’s case draws on Grand Seiko’s 44GS design, which the brand traces to 1967. The Explorer’s appeal is tied to its own long-running model lineage: Rolex’s history page says the line returned to 36 mm in 2021, after moving to 39 mm in 2010. That lineage context does not make the current Explorer’s specifications applicable to the 214270.
The SBGH279’s 19 mm lug width is useful to know if you are considering another strap. Fratello notes that the lug holes make bracelet-to-strap changes easier. Check the actual strap width and spring-bar fit for the individual watch before buying; the cited sources do not establish compatibility with every 19 mm strap.

As checked on October 8, 2026, Grand Seiko’s US boutique page listed the SBGH279 at $6,100 and marked it “Out of Stock.” This is a page-specific US listing, not a guarantee of current availability or a price in another market. Fratello’s January 2021 article said both watches had a €6,200 list price at that time; that historical comparison is not a current price guide.

The cited sources do not establish today’s resale price or availability for the Explorer 214270, or the current secondary-market price of the SBGH279. For a pre-owned watch, judge the particular example rather than the reference name alone. Confirm authenticity, condition, service history and what is included in the sale, and compare recent offers in your market before deciding.
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Explorer 214270 if you want a clean black dial, luminous night-time legibility, no date and the familiar 3-6-9 design in the 39 mm generation.
- Choose the SBGH279 if you prefer the grey, faceted 44GS-style design, want a date, and are drawn to its high-beat movement and longer listed power reserve.
- Try both before deciding if fit is the deciding factor. The SBGH279’s listed dimensions are detailed, but the cited sources do not give the 214270’s full case measurements.
Neither specification sheet resolves the personal trade-off: the Explorer makes reading the time in darkness easier, while the Grand Seiko offers more dial character and a date. Let your priorities, the fit on your wrist and the condition of the actual watch make the final call.
