The current Rolex Explorer comes in two Oystersteel sizes: 36 mm (reference 124270) and 40 mm (reference 224270). Both use Rolex calibre 3230, have a stated power reserve of approximately 70 hours, and are rated water-resistant to 100 metres (330 feet). These are Rolex specifications, not independent test results.

Rolex Explorer 36 vs. 40: which size should you choose?
The clearest distinction is the 4 mm difference in stated case diameter. That number alone does not establish which watch will fit or look better on a particular wrist. Wrist shape, personal taste and the proportions you prefer all matter, and the available specifications do not provide comparative wear testing.

- Consider the 40 mm reference 224270 if you prefer the larger stated diameter; Rolex says this size has been available since 2023.
Whenever possible, try each size on and assess how the case and bracelet sit on your own wrist. Do not treat diameter as a substitute for fit.
What do the Explorer’s specifications mean?
Calibre 3230 and power reserve
Rolex describes calibre 3230 as a self-winding mechanical movement with a Chronergy escapement, blue Parachrom hairspring and Paraflex shock absorbers. Rolex gives its power reserve as approximately 70 hours. Power reserve is the approximate running time after the watch is fully wound, assuming it is not rewound during that period.

Water resistance
Rolex rates the Oyster case to 100 metres (330 feet). This is a manufacturer-rated water-resistance specification, not a promise about every real-world circumstance or an independent test result. Follow Rolex’s guidance for care and use, and have the watch checked if its water resistance is in doubt.
Precision
Rolex states finished-watch precision of -2/+2 seconds per day under its Superlative Chronometer standard. This is the brand’s stated criterion for a cased watch, not a guarantee that every individual watch will show identical results in every condition.

Rolex dates the Explorer’s launch to 1953, in the wake of the Everest ascent. The distinction matters: Rolex’s account connects Oyster Perpetual watches with the expedition; it does not establish that a production Explorer was worn on the summit. The brand traces its broader relationship with expeditions to the 1930s.

The model’s recent size history helps explain today’s two options. Rolex says the Explorer returned to 36 mm in 2021 after moving to 39 mm in 2010; the 40 mm version followed in 2023.
Where should you buy or service a Rolex Explorer?
Rolex states that “Only official Rolex retailers are allowed to sell and maintain a Rolex watch.” Use Rolex’s official retailer channel to identify an authorized retailer or service route. That does not establish local stock, a delivery timeline or a particular price.
If considering a secondary-market watch, verify the seller’s identity, the exact reference, authenticity, warranty status and condition independently. A marketplace listing should not be assumed to be Rolex-authorized, and no current local or secondary-market price is established here.
