Mechanical Rolex watches advance in rapid steps that can look like a smooth sweep and can make a ticking sound. Genuine Rolex quartz watches also exist, including models whose seconds hands tick once per second. Neither the sound nor the appearance of the hand can authenticate a watch.
Why does a genuine Rolex seconds hand look like it sweeps?
A mechanical watch’s seconds hand does not move continuously. It advances in small steps, with brief pauses between them. Rolex explains that the seconds hand on the watch described in its technical article remains stationary for 115 milliseconds between each step. The intervals are short enough that the hand can appear to glide to the eye.
For context, Bob’s Watches describes modern self-winding Rolex movements as running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or eight ticks per second. That is a retailer’s description of modern self-winding calibres, not a figure stated on the Rolex technical page. At that pace, the motion may look smooth, but it is still a series of steps.
Listen closely and those steps may be audible. Whether you hear a tick depends on the watch and how you listen; silence is not a reliable authenticity test either.

Can a real Rolex tick once per second?
Yes. Rolex made quartz watches, including Oysterquartz models. One documented special case is the Rolex calibre 5035/5055: an American Watchmakers-Clockmakers Institute technical article published in Horological Times in May 2011 describes its quartz movement as having a mechanically driven seconds display that produces a ticking action.
So a once-per-second tick does not, by itself, prove that a Rolex is counterfeit. It may be consistent with a genuine quartz model, although the sound alone cannot establish that the watch is one.

How to spot a fake Rolex?
You cannot reliably identify a counterfeit from the seconds hand’s motion or sound. A counterfeit can use a mechanical movement, too, and may appear to sweep. The same visible or audible behavior can therefore occur in watches with different origins.
- A smooth-looking hand does not prove the watch is genuine.
- A ticking hand does not prove the watch is fake.
- A quiet watch does not prove authenticity.
These observations may prompt questions, but they are not a substitute for an authentication process. Avoid treating a visual check, a listening test, or consumer inspection as a verdict.

How can I ensure the authenticity of a Rolex watch?
For a new genuine Rolex, Rolex directs buyers to an Official Rolex Jeweler. For a pre-owned watch, the clearest distinction is who performs the authentication and what the process covers.

These routes are not equivalent: a seller’s or third party’s assessment is not Rolex authentication. Rolex states, “Only Rolex can confirm the authenticity of a Rolex watch.” Ask who inspected the watch, whether its configuration was checked, whether it was serviced, and what the guarantee and return terms cover. A report that addresses authenticity should not be assumed to certify accuracy or timekeeping.

For a new Rolex, use an Official Rolex Jeweler; for a qualifying pre-owned Rolex, look for the Certified Pre-Owned programme at a participating Official Retailer.
