Choose the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 if you want a self-winding watch with a simple lavender dial and a 100-metre published water-resistance rating. Choose the Grand Seiko SBGW323 if you prefer a hand-wound watch whose purple dial has a Mt. Iwate pattern inspired by the kiri flower. Their case diameters are close; the bigger practical difference is how each watch looks and winds.

Specifications and displayed prices are from the brands’ official product pages: Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36, reference 126000 and Grand Seiko SBGW323. The figures describe manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative tests.
What distinguishes the dials?
Rolex: a lavender lacquer dial
Rolex identifies the Oyster Perpetual 36 dial as lavender and says its color is produced with lacquer applied in a controlled-atmosphere environment. The dial also has a Chromalight display. The product description does not establish how the color or legibility compares with the Grand Seiko in person.
Grand Seiko: purple with a Mt. Iwate pattern
The SBGW323 combines a purple dial with the Mt. Iwate pattern and the brand’s 44GS design lineage. Grand Seiko connects the color to the kiri, the official flower of Iwate Prefecture: “The kiri, recognized as the official flower of Iwate Prefecture, blooms in pale purple each spring.” The quote and design description are from Grand Seiko’s official SBGW323 page.

In short, the Rolex presents a named lavender color with a lacquer finish, while the Grand Seiko adds a patterned surface and a specific regional inspiration. Neither description establishes which will look brighter or more appealing on your wrist.
Automatic or hand-wound?
Rolex calibre 3230
The Oyster Perpetual uses Rolex’s mechanical self-winding calibre 3230. Its stated power reserve is approximately 70 hours. It suits a wearer who wants an automatic movement rather than a daily winding ritual.
Grand Seiko calibre 9S64
The SBGW323 uses Grand Seiko’s mechanical manual-winding calibre 9S64, with an approximately 72-hour power reserve—about three days. Winding it by hand is part of ownership, so consider whether that routine is a pleasure or an inconvenience for you.

The reserve figures are close, but they do not make the movements interchangeable: one is self-winding and the other is manually wound. Both figures are approximate manufacturer specifications.
How should you read the accuracy figures?
The published figures use different definitions and should not be treated as a direct head-to-head result. Rolex states precision of -2/+2 seconds per day after casing. Grand Seiko gives a mean daily rate of +5/-3 seconds per day in stated controlled movement-test conditions and separately lists normal-use accuracy of +10/-1 seconds per day. The Grand Seiko test rate and normal-use figure are distinct measures; neither brand’s specification is an independent comparison of these two watches.
How close are they in size and water resistance?
The Rolex case is 36 mm across; the Grand Seiko is 36.5 mm. Grand Seiko also publishes a 42.7 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 11.6 mm thickness, while the cited Rolex page does not state corresponding dimensions. A half-millimetre difference in diameter alone cannot determine fit: wrist shape, lug span, thickness, and bracelet feel also matter. Try each on if fit is decisive.

Rolex publishes 100 m / 330 ft water resistance, while Grand Seiko publishes 10 bar. These are the manufacturers’ stated ratings; the product pages do not establish activity-specific suitability, so do not infer a use recommendation from this comparison alone.

Quick Recap
Which one should you choose?
- Choose the Rolex Oyster Perpetual 36 if an automatic movement, a straightforward lavender lacquer dial, and the higher published water-resistance rating are your priorities.
- Choose the Grand Seiko SBGW323 if you want a hand-wound movement, a patterned purple dial with a kiri and Mt. Iwate connection, and the extra published case measurements to consider when assessing fit.
- Compare them in person if the deciding factors are wrist comfort or the exact shade and texture of the dial; the specifications alone cannot settle those questions.
