Rolex lists five case sizes—28, 31, 34, 36 and 41 mm—and a changing range of dial designs, so the collection’s appeal is as much about choosing a proportion and colour as it is about its restrained layout.
What is a Rolex Oyster Perpetual?
At its simplest, the Oyster Perpetual displays hours, minutes and seconds. Its movement winds itself as the wearer moves, using Rolex’s Perpetual rotor. Rolex calls the watches in the collection Superlative Chronometers.

The spare display is a deliberate part of the model’s identity: there is no date window or additional complication competing with the three hands. Rolex describes it as “the chronometer wristwatch in its purest form.” That simplicity makes the dial, case size and finish especially visible in the overall look.

How the Oyster Perpetual got its name
The name joins two milestones in Rolex’s history, but the dates refer to distinct developments. Rolex says it unveiled the waterproof Oyster case in 1926. The Oyster Perpetual followed in 1931, when the brand introduced self-winding through its Perpetual rotor.
#1 Best Overall
Rolex describes the Oyster Perpetual as a direct descendant of the original Oyster. Its historical account also records the 1926 Oyster’s association with swimmer Mercedes Gleitze’s English Channel attempt; that story is part of Rolex’s account of the case’s early public demonstration, not a modern performance test.
Which Oyster Perpetual size should you consider?
Rolex’s current feature page lists five diameters:
| Diameter | What to consider |
|---|---|
| 28 mm | A smaller case option; try it on if you want to judge its proportions on your wrist. |
| 31 mm | A modest step up in diameter from 28 mm; wrist fit depends on more than the number alone. |
| 34 mm | An intermediate listed size, worth comparing in person with the adjacent options. |
| 36 mm | A mid-size choice in the current range; how it wears depends on your wrist and preferences. |
| 41 mm | The largest diameter Rolex lists for the collection; check the fit on your wrist rather than relying on diameter alone. |
Diameter is only one part of fit and does not establish how a watch will look or feel on a particular wrist. If fit matters, try the exact size on before deciding.
How to compare dials and materials
Rolex presents the collection with a varied assortment of dial colours and designs, while its feature page identifies Oystersteel and gold among the materials. These details can change across the lineup: a colour or configuration shown at one time may not remain available, and a general collection description does not confirm the material of every reference.

- Dial: Choose the colour and design that suit your wardrobe and how prominently you want the dial to stand out. Confirm that the particular option is currently offered.
- Material: Check the exact model configuration rather than assuming a material applies to every size or dial.
- Reference: Match the reference number to the size, dial and material you intend to buy.
For current configurations, check Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual features page and official configurator. A retailer can confirm what is available through that channel.

Rolex Newsroom states a guaranteed waterproof depth of 100 metres (330 feet) for the Oyster Perpetual. This is the manufacturer’s stated specification, not independent test evidence or blanket advice for every watch or water activity. For a specific watch, verify its reference, condition and current water-resistance status with an authorized service provider before exposing it to water.
What to verify before buying
Availability, condition and seller details are specific to a listing; a collection page alone does not establish them. Before committing to a purchase, check:
- That the reference matches the size, dial and material you want.
- The watch’s condition and whether its service history is documented.
- What warranty is included and who provides it.
- The seller’s authorization and the watch’s authenticity.
Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual collection page is the appropriate place to confirm official collection details, while a seller must substantiate the terms and condition of an individual watch.
