The clearest difference between the Rolex Oyster Perpetual and Datejust is the date: the Oyster Perpetual has a clean three-hand display, while the Datejust adds a date window at 3 o’clock, magnified by Rolex’s Cyclops lens. Both collections offer 31, 36 and 41 mm options, so the choice comes down to whether you want that date display, which design and configuration you prefer, and how each exact watch fits on your wrist.

Does the Oyster Perpetual have a date?
No. Rolex’s collection description presents the Oyster Perpetual as a three-hand watch showing hours, minutes and seconds, without a date display. The Datejust is the option of these two if you want to read the date directly on the dial: its window sits at 3 o’clock, and the Cyclops lens magnifies it for legibility. Rolex says the Datejust was released in 1945. Rolex Datejust

There is direct size overlap: both collections include 31, 36 and 41 mm choices on the reviewed collection pages. The Oyster Perpetual also appears in 28 and 34 mm sizes. Case diameter is a useful starting point, but it cannot settle fit on its own; the bracelet, weight and the way the dial looks on your wrist matter too.

- If you want to compare two watches at the same diameter, start with a shared size such as 36 mm, then compare the exact references and configurations.
- Try the actual references you are considering rather than assuming two watches with the same diameter will feel identical.
How do the styles and configurations compare?
Oyster Perpetual: a simple dial layout
Its hours, minutes and seconds display leaves the dial without the Datejust’s date window and magnifier. Rolex highlights a variety of dial colours and designs; check the current collection for the size and specific configuration you want, rather than assuming every colour is offered in every size. Datejust: more configuration choices
The Datejust collection spans different metals, bezel styles, bracelets and dials. That creates more combinations to compare, but the options are reference-specific: not every combination is available in every size. Choose by the exact watch, not just the collection name. Rolex Datejust

What specifications should you compare?
Specifications vary by size and configuration, so confirm them against the exact reference. Rolex’s collection information lists calibre 3230 in Oyster Perpetual 36 and 41 mm models and calibre 2232 in smaller models. For the Datejust, the cited 36 and 41 mm examples use calibre 3235, while 31 mm examples use calibre 2236. Rolex Newsroom Rolex Datejust
As one specific comparison point, Rolex lists the Oystersteel Datejust 41 reference 126300 with a 41 mm case, calibre 3235, approximately 70-hour power reserve, 100 m water resistance, rapid-set date and Superlative Chronometer certification. That is the specification set for that reference, not a summary of every Datejust. Datejust 41 reference 126300

- Decide whether you want a date display. Choose the Oyster Perpetual for the no-date, three-hand layout or the Datejust if the date window is useful to you.
- Choose a size to try. Compare a shared diameter, such as 36 mm, or assess the other sizes listed for the collections.
- Compare the exact configurations. Look at dial, bezel, material and bracelet together; combinations depend on size and reference.
- Try them on in person. Rolex advises experiencing a watch first-hand to assess its weight, dial colour in natural light, bracelet feel and fit. Its Official Rolex Retailer network covers more than 100 countries, according to Rolex. Experiencing a Rolex
Rolex’s buying guidance puts the value of a try-on this way: “By experiencing each timepiece first-hand, you will fully appreciate the watch’s weight, the dial’s colours in natural light, the feel of the bracelet and its fit on your wrist – ensuring a choice that will last a lifetime.” Experiencing a Rolex
