The Q3 2026 secondary-market scoreboard
The latest Morgan Stanley commentary, reported through WatchPro, describes a market that is still recovering. Prices across the 35 tracked brands rose 1.2% quarter over quarter and 8.3% year over year, marking the fifth consecutive quarter with gains above 1%. Twenty-eight brands recorded increases.

Listings from the six largest brands were almost 20% higher than a year earlier. That increase gives buyers more choice and can weaken sellers’ ability to raise prices quickly, even while headline market indexes remain positive.

Rolex demand has stalled
The cited analysis links Rolex’s slower quarterly advance to stagnant demand growth. A market can continue rising when demand is positive but slower than supply; that appears to be the current pattern for Rolex rather than a collapse in buyer interest.

More inventory reduces urgency
Record-high Rolex inventory and the broader increase in listings mean buyers can compare more examples, wait for a better price and negotiate more selectively. When watches remain available for longer, sellers have less leverage and rapid appreciation becomes harder to sustain.
The retail-to-secondary spread is widening for many brands
A larger pre-owned pool creates alternatives to buying at an authorised retailer. That makes aggressive official-retail price increases harder to maintain, particularly when a comparable unworn or lightly worn watch is readily available elsewhere. The cited report says brands outside Rolex, Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet continued to trade at discounts of at least 25% to official retail; it does not establish one universal Rolex discount.
Rivals benefit from different collection mixes
Brand averages conceal the references driving them. Patek Philippe’s sports-led collections and Audemars Piguet’s strongest references can appreciate faster than the rest of their brands, lifting their aggregate results. Rolex’s index includes a broader mix of professional, classic and precious-metal watches, so weaker performance in one segment can offset strength in another.

Gold prices and collection composition distort simple comparisons
Precious-metal watches respond partly to metal prices, while steel sports models respond more directly to scarcity, fashion and collector demand. A sharp move in gold or an uneven performance between collections can therefore make a brand-level comparison look better or worse than the experience of an owner of a particular reference.
Are Rolex prices still going up in 2026?
Yes, on the available measures. The WatchCharts Rolex Market Index stood at $27,924 on October 14, 2026. It was 5.3% higher than a year earlier, although still 11.0% below its level five years ago. Those figures describe direction over two different time horizons: a current recovery has not erased the longer-term decline from the market’s earlier peak.

The index tracks the top 30 Rolex models by transaction value. It is weighted by the value of transactions rather than treating every reference equally, and it is rebalanced every January 1.

- It is an average, not a price for every Rolex. A heavily traded model can influence the headline more than a niche reference.
- Individual references can diverge. A watch may rise while the index is flat, or fall while the index rises.
- Rebalancing matters. The model set and weights are refreshed annually, so year-to-year comparisons should be read with the index methodology in mind.
The available figures do not identify which individual Rolex references gained the most in Q3. Buyers looking for a specific model should therefore check its own transaction history rather than infer performance from the brand index.
Is buying pre-owned cheaper than buying at retail?
There is no single Rolex answer. Secondary prices depend on reference, material, condition, set completeness, provenance and seller. The reported 25%-or-more discounts apply to brands outside the Big Three, not automatically to Rolex.

- Authorised retail: confirm the official price, availability and delivery terms for the exact reference.
- Rolex Certified Pre-Owned: check whether the watch is available through the programme and what certification, warranty and servicing are included.
- Independent pre-owned seller: compare the asking price with recent completed transactions, then verify authenticity, condition, serial information, return rights and warranty coverage.
Rising inventory can improve selection without guaranteeing a bargain. A lower asking price may reflect condition, missing accessories or weaker demand for that reference rather than a market-wide Rolex discount.

WatchCharts’ December 2025 review recorded Rolex up 3.3% year to date, while Patek Philippe was up 7.7%. It described 2025 as unusually volatile because of gold-price gains, currency weakness, tariff changes and repeated official-retail price increases.

Gold prices rose more than 60% during 2025, yet the Rolex Day-Date Market Index rose 5.7%. That gap illustrates why precious-metal content alone does not determine a watch’s market value: collectors also price brand equity, design, craftsmanship, condition and liquidity.

What buyers and owners should watch next
- Inventory: sustained growth in listings would continue to pressure sellers’ pricing power.
- Demand: a return to faster Rolex demand growth would be needed for the brand to close the quarterly gap with its rivals.
- Reference-level data: collection and material trends can differ sharply from the aggregate index.
- Retail pricing: repeated official increases are harder to pass through when comparable pre-owned watches are plentiful.
- Time horizon: the one-year gain and five-year loss show why a short-term recovery should not be treated as a full trend reversal.
Morgan Stanley’s commentary, reproduced by WatchPro, summarizes the risk: “We still see a fundamentally healthy market, but believe elevated inventory could limit further secondary price appreciation and brand’s pricing power, particularly outside of the Big Three [Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe], where all tracked brands continue to trade at discounts of at least -25% to retail.”
The practical conclusion is narrow but important: Rolex is still participating in the 2026 recovery, yet its slower quarterly gain shows that supply and demand now matter more than the brand’s reputation alone. Future performance will depend on whether demand reaccelerates faster than inventory builds.
