The Submariner favors a 41 mm case, a ceramic 60-minute bezel and Oyster bracelet; the documented Blancpain Fifty Fathoms 5010 is larger at 42.30 mm, offers a five-day power reserve and comes with interchangeable strap options. Neither is a universal winner.
At a glance: the compared watches
This comparison uses Rolex’s current Submariner and Submariner Date specifications alongside one identifiable Blancpain reference, the steel Fifty Fathoms 5010 1130 B64A. Specifications and configurations vary across each collection, so the 5010’s dimensions and movement figures should not be applied to every Fifty Fathoms.

How do their designs and histories differ?
Two lines introduced in 1953
Both brands date their dive-watch lines to 1953. Rolex says the Submariner was its first divers’ wristwatch and was rated waterproof to 100 metres at launch. Blancpain calls the Fifty Fathoms the first modern diver’s watch; that description is Blancpain’s historical framing, not a neutral finding of comparative priority.
Rolex’s history also distinguishes the date-equipped model: the Submariner Date was unveiled in 1969. For a short official overview of the current Rolex design, see Rolex’s Submariner feature page. Blancpain presents its line history on the Fifty Fathoms collection page.

Different bezel materials and visual character
The Submariner has a unidirectional bezel with a 60-minute Cerachrom ceramic insert and a luminescent display, alongside its familiar Oyster bracelet. Blancpain’s collection signature is a unidirectional bezel with a domed sapphire insert. The materials create distinct appearances; the specifications here do not establish an independent ranking of scratch resistance.
The Fifty Fathoms design places more emphasis on the watchmaking details and, depending on reference, a range of strap choices. The 5010 specification also lists a sapphire display back. Check the exact reference’s included configuration rather than assuming every Fifty Fathoms ships with the same strap or bracelet.

Which one fits your wrist and preferences?
Start with dimensions, not collection names
Rolex specifies the Submariner at 41 mm. The compared Fifty Fathoms 5010 measures 42.30 mm across and 14.30 mm thick, so it is both wider and substantial in profile. Blancpain’s broader Fifty Fathoms range also includes 38 mm and 45 mm offerings, according to its craftsmanship page. That range makes reference-level comparison especially important.
Case diameter alone cannot predict comfort: thickness, lug shape, strap or bracelet, and the wearer’s wrist all affect how a watch sits. Try the specific references on if possible, especially if the 5010’s thickness or larger footprint is a concern.

- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106B is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106B features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
Choose a date display deliberately
The Submariner line offers both no-date and Date versions. The cited Blancpain 5010 includes a date, so someone who wants an uncluttered dial should compare the no-date Rolex with a Blancpain reference whose dial configuration is verified, rather than treating the 5010 as representative of every Fifty Fathoms.
Bracelet versus straps
Rolex’s Oyster bracelet, Oysterlock clasp and Glidelock extension suit buyers who prefer an integrated metal-bracelet setup with clasp adjustment. Blancpain’s listed options for the 5010 include rubber, sail-canvas, NATO and steel straps, making strap choice a more visible part of its configuration. Confirm what is supplied with the exact watch under consideration.

Water resistance and movement reserve
Published water-resistance specifications
Rolex rates current Submariner and Submariner Date models to 300 m / 1,000 ft. Blancpain rates the 5010 1130 B64A to 30 bar. These are manufacturer specifications; they are not a guarantee that a particular watch is suitable for every dive or condition. Follow the maker’s care and water-use guidance for the specific reference.
Calibres and power reserve
Rolex identifies calibre 3230 in the no-date Submariner and calibre 3235 in the Submariner Date, each with approximately 70 hours of power reserve. Blancpain’s 5010 uses automatic calibre 1315, with a stated 120-hour reserve and a silicon balance spring. Blancpain describes the 42 mm calibre 1315 as having a five-day reserve.
