Rolex is taking a larger role in how its watches are retailed, authenticated and resold, but the available evidence does not show that it has taken over watch distribution or servicing. The clearest potential consequences are greater brand influence over the buying and resale experience, a more defined route to a Rolex-backed pre-owned watch, and pressure on independent businesses to compete on trust and service. Effects on prices, wait times, dealer livelihoods and independent watchmakers remain possible—not established outcomes.
What does “control everything” mean in practice?
The phrase comes from Lex Stolk’s May 26, 2025 Fratello article, which describes Rolex’s increasing involvement in distribution, certified resale and servicing. It is a characterization of a business direction, not a legal finding that Rolex controls the whole watch market. The documented picture is more limited: Rolex has a network of independent Official Rolex Jewelers, it certifies and guarantees eligible pre-owned watches sold through participating retailers, and it acquired the multi-brand retailer Bucherer in 2023.
Rolex’s US Terms of Use say that new watches are sold exclusively through Official Rolex Jewelers, not directly from Rolex’s website. The terms state that jewelers “independently manage the allocation and sales of watches to customers.” The page was last updated in July 2018, so it documents Rolex’s published policy at that time; it does not establish how allocations work in every market or how they have changed since.
The European Commission’s decision on the Bucherer transaction offers a regional check on claims of direct retail expansion. At the time covered by that decision, Rolex owned two physical stores in the EEA, both in Greece, and none in other Member States. That is a dated EEA snapshot, not a worldwide or current store count. The same decision describes Rolex’s third-party retail network and Bucherer’s activities as a luxury watch retailer and service provider.

How the new-watch and Certified Pre-Owned channels differ
| Question | New Rolex watch | Rolex Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) |
|---|---|---|
| Who sells it? | An Official Rolex Jeweler; Rolex says it does not sell new watches directly from its website. | A participating point of sale in the Official Rolex Jewelers network. The European Commission describes retailers buying pre-owned watches from end customers, then reselling them with Rolex certification and warranty involvement. |
| What does Rolex do? | Rolex supplies its official-jeweler network. Its published terms say jewelers independently handle allocation and sales. | Rolex says the watch returns to a Rolex workshop for authentication, servicing and testing. |
| What guarantee is described? | The cited materials do not establish the terms for every new-watch sale or region. | Rolex describes a two-year international guarantee. Its process page notes exceptions for some older models, including waterproofness and original precision. |
| What is established about availability? | Rolex says demand can exceed production capacity and some models may be limited. The materials do not quantify wait times. | Participation is limited to certain authorized points of sale. The sources do not establish how quickly a particular model will be available. |
The comparison shows a meaningful difference in brand involvement: CPO brings Rolex into the authentication and warranty process for an eligible used watch. It does not mean every used Rolex is part of the program, nor that every retailer or independent seller has disappeared.
What could change for buyers?
A more brand-controlled route to a pre-owned watch
CPO offers buyers a retailer-mediated way to purchase an eligible pre-owned Rolex that has gone through Rolex’s own authentication, service and testing process, with the program’s two-year international guarantee. That may appeal to someone who values brand-backed assurance over buying from an independent seller. It also gives Rolex a direct role in setting the standards attached to this particular resale channel.
That assurance is not a universal statement about the condition of every CPO watch. Rolex itself describes exceptions for some older models, including limits related to waterproofness and original precision. Buyers should check the specific watch, its condition and the guarantee terms that apply to it rather than assuming that “certified” makes every vintage specification equivalent to a new watch.
Availability may remain difficult to predict
For new watches, Rolex says some models may be limited when demand exceeds production capacity, while its published terms leave allocation and customer sales to the independent official jewelers. More brand involvement elsewhere in the business does not, on its own, establish that wait times will shorten, lengthen or become more consistent. The sources provide no measured wait-time data.
More choice of assurance may come with less choice of seller
A buyer who wants Rolex-issued authentication and a Rolex guarantee has a narrower route than someone willing to consider any used-watch seller. That is a trade-off, not proof that independent offerings are less trustworthy. The sources do not provide model-by-model price comparisons between CPO and other pre-owned watches, so no general price premium can be established from them.
What does Bucherer mean for independent retailers?
Rolex acquired Bucherer in 2023. The European Commission’s transaction materials describe Bucherer as a multi-brand luxury watch retailer with 112 physical stores worldwide in the documents considered for that decision. The figure is specific to those materials and should not be treated as Bucherer’s current store count. The Commission also records Rolex’s stated rationale, including the companies’ longstanding relationship.
The acquisition gives Rolex a route to greater participation in retail and customer experience, but it is not evidence that Rolex has replaced independent Official Rolex Jewelers or switched to direct-to-consumer sales. Rolex’s published terms continue to describe new-watch sales through official jewelers, and the Commission decision describes a network of third-party retailers. What the deal could mean over time for bargaining power, customer access or competition is a reasonable question; the cited materials do not demonstrate that independent dealers have been displaced or quantify any commercial effect.
Fratello reported that the CPO network had grown from 25 to 107 retail partners and 217 physical locations by its May 2025 article. Those are secondary-source figures, not an official Rolex statistic in the materials cited here. If accurate, they indicate a growing branded resale footprint, but they do not show what share of all Rolex resale transactions it represents or how it has affected independent retailers.

Rolex’s US Terms of Use say that third-party additions, substitutions or material alterations can cancel the warranty, and that Rolex does not approve non-authorized customizations. Those are Rolex’s stated warranty and customization terms; they do not amount to a general legal prohibition on independent repair work.
A US consent judgment in Rolex Watch U.S.A., Inc. v. SDOT Watches LLC et al. bars the defendants from specified conduct involving counterfeit or non-genuine watches and parts, as well as false claims that goods or services are authorized or affiliated with Rolex. Its scope is case-specific. It should not be read as a universal ban on independent servicing or every compatible non-branded component.
Fratello attributes reports of service-center closures, particularly in China, and proposed regional Rolex service hubs to Jing Daily. It also notes uncertainty about whether the hubs were rumor or confirmed plans. The cited official materials do not confirm a worldwide closure policy or establish that those proposed hubs are operating. For independent watchmakers, any future change in access to parts, training or authorized work could matter, but the available evidence does not establish that such a change has occurred globally.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
- Documented: Rolex’s published model for new watches uses Official Rolex Jewelers; its CPO program puts Rolex workshops, certification and a two-year international guarantee into a participating retailer’s resale process; and Rolex acquired Bucherer in 2023.
- Reported by Fratello in May 2025: CPO network growth, a reported Rolex 2024 revenue figure of CHF 10.58 billion, and reporting about service-center closures and proposed hubs. The revenue figure is not independently verified by the official materials cited here, and the service developments are not confirmed as a global policy.
- Not measured or established: changes in consumer prices, new-watch wait times, dealer profitability, market competition, or the number of independent watchmakers affected.
The practical consequence so far is clearer brand participation in selected parts of the retail and resale chain—not proof of total market control. Whether that participation improves assurance or restricts choice depends on how the channels develop and on outcomes that the cited sources do not yet measure.
