A watch winder is optional for a Rolex: Rolex says a watch worn daily does not need manual winding, and its published care guidance does not specify one universal winder setting for every model. If you want to keep a Rolex running while it is off your wrist, choose an adjustable automatic watch winder and confirm the turns per day (TPD) and direction for your exact watch and the winder’s controls.
Does a Rolex need a watch winder?
No. Rolex says its Perpetual rotor is powered by wrist movement and transfers energy to the mainspring. Its FAQ states, “There is no need to wind a Rolex if it is worn daily.” If you set the watch aside, its power reserve lasts up to 70 hours, depending on the model, according to Rolex’s US FAQ (Rolex FAQ).
A winder is an optional convenience for keeping an automatic watch running while it is off the wrist. That can be useful if you would rather not reset a watch’s time or complications after it stops. It is not a routine requirement, and Rolex does not endorse a particular winder.
How do you wind a stopped Rolex?
Rolex’s US FAQ says to unscrew the crown to the winding position and turn it clockwise about 20 times, then screw the crown back down properly. Rolex’s UK care guidance instead says a minimum of 25 turns provides adequate partial winding, and advises winding a stopped watch before setting it and wearing it. These are separate Rolex page instructions, not a single universal turn count (US FAQ; UK care guidance).

- Unscrew the crown until it is in the winding position.
- Turn the crown clockwise using the guidance for your model. Rolex’s US FAQ says about 20 turns; its UK page specifies a minimum of 25 turns for adequate partial winding.
- Screw the crown back against the case securely to preserve the watch’s waterproofness.
- Set the time and any model-specific functions using the instructions in your Rolex model guide.
Rolex notes that functions vary by model, so consult the relevant guide if you are unsure how to set a complication (Rolex user guides).
What TPD and direction should you set for a Rolex?
Rolex’s reviewed care and user-guide pages explain manual winding and model functions but do not give a universal watch-winder TPD or direction setting. Do not treat a general winder setting as an official Rolex recommendation. Check the exact model or movement in the watch maker’s database, then confirm how your particular winder implements its settings.

WOLF describes its controls as A for clockwise, B for counterclockwise and C for bidirectional. It advises users to find the watch’s direction and TPD in its database. WOLF also says its own bidirectional mode doubles the selected TPD, so do not assume that a displayed figure means the same thing across brands or devices (WOLF FAQ).
WOLF gives approximately 650–900 TPD in bidirectional mode as a general reference for many automatic watches, while noting that requirements vary by movement. This is WOLF manufacturer guidance, not an official Rolex specification or a verified setting for every Rolex model (WOLF winder settings).

What to look for in a watch winder for a Rolex
For this use, focus on an automatic watch winder with adjustable TPD and direction. Choose by the exact watch and the device’s control logic rather than by a brand name or a single setting presented as suitable for every Rolex.
- Adjustable TPD: Make sure the device supports the setting specified for your exact watch by a reliable maker’s database or documentation.
- Direction modes: Check whether it offers clockwise, counterclockwise and bidirectional operation, and which mode your watch requires.
- Bidirectional counting: Read the winder maker’s explanation of whether the selected TPD counts total turns or is doubled in bidirectional mode. WOLF, for example, says its bidirectional mode doubles the chosen TPD; other devices may behave differently.
- Fit: Confirm that the watch and its bracelet or cuff fit securely in the holder and inside the case.
- Capacity and power: Match the number of winding slots and AC or battery operation to where and how you plan to use it.
- Display and storage: Decide whether you want a winder that also serves as visible storage, or simply a functional winding slot.

What if a Rolex stops even after being on a winder?
First, check that the watch is wound and that the crown is fully screwed down after manual winding. Then verify that the winder’s TPD and direction match the exact watch and that you understand how the device counts rotations, particularly in bidirectional mode. If the watch still stops or does not behave as expected, consult a Rolex service centre rather than increasing settings by guesswork.
