Rolex’s 2023 Watch Releases: What Changed and How to Spot Them

Rolex’s 2023 watch releases included a new collection, the Perpetual 1908, alongside updates and new configurations across established lines. A broad year-end roundup also covered the Cosmograph Daytona, Sky-Dweller, Yacht-Master 42, GMT-Master II, Explorer 40 and Oyster Perpetual. The clearest documented visual changes are on the Daytona and Sky-Dweller; details for the other models are not established here, so photographs should not be used to infer exact references or specifications.

Which Rolex watches were part of the 2023 releases?

A Tourneau | Bucherer roundup of Rolex’s 2023 new-watch coverage names these six lines: the Perpetual 1908, Cosmograph Daytona, Sky-Dweller, Yacht-Master 42, GMT-Master II, Explorer 40 and Oyster Perpetual. This is a broad editorial roster, not a complete official specification list or confirmation that every model shown in a particular photo report represents a new reference.

Rolex’s own materials provide specific release details for the 1908, Daytona and Sky-Dweller. For the Yacht-Master 42, GMT-Master II, Explorer 40 and Oyster Perpetual, the available material establishes their inclusion in the roundup, but not the exact 2023 configuration or what changed. A photograph can help identify visible features; it cannot by itself confirm a reference, movement or release status.

What changed on the 2023 Cosmograph Daytona?

Rolex described 2023 as “a new milestone in the evolution of the Cosmograph Daytona.” Its brochure identifies changes to the dial and case that are useful when comparing photographs:

The bezel detail applies to versions with a Cerachrom bezel, not automatically to every Daytona. Because the original live photographs are not available here, no specific image can be matched to a configuration or reference.

What was new on the 2023 Sky-Dweller?

Rolex’s 2023 brochure describes three dial-and-material combinations. These are the brochure’s named configurations, not a claim that they exhaust every Sky-Dweller offered that year.

Configuration described by Rolex Dial Case and bracelet or strap
Oysterflex version Bright black 18 ct white gold; Oysterflex bracelet
White Rolesor version Mint green White Rolesor
Oyster-bracelet version Blue-green 18 ct Everose gold; Oyster bracelet

Rolex also introduced calibre 9002, which incorporates a Chronergy escapement and a new oscillating weight with optimized ball bearing. The brochure characterizes the Sky-Dweller as a two-time-zone watch with an annual Saros calendar. These movement and calendar details are official product information; they are not identifiable from a still image alone.

Why did Rolex introduce the Perpetual 1908?

Rolex says the Perpetual 1908 collection launched in 2023 as a traditional-style reinterpretation within its Perpetual collection. A transparent case back is one of the features Rolex highlights. The name commemorates 1908, the year Hans Wilsdorf devised the name Rolex for his creations and registered the brand in Switzerland.

How to read a Rolex release photo accurately

Separate what the image shows from what official product material confirms. A useful comparison starts with the model’s visible identity, then records the configuration without treating appearance as proof of hidden specifications.

  1. Identify the line. Look at the overall dial layout, bezel and case shape to distinguish a Daytona, Sky-Dweller or 1908. Treat this as visual identification, not a reference-level confirmation.
  2. Describe only visible details. Note dial colour, subdial arrangement, bezel material or shape, case finish, and bracelet or strap. In particular, use the Daytona’s marker, counter-ring and case redesign as comparison points.
  3. Check the configuration against a source. For the Sky-Dweller, Rolex’s brochure identifies the bright-black, mint-green and blue-green combinations and their associated materials. Do not assign one of those descriptions to an image unless its visible details support it.
  4. Keep technical claims separate. Movement, calendar function and exact reference require reliable product documentation; a photograph cannot establish them.
  5. Mark uncertainty plainly. If the image does not clearly show a detail, or the reference is not documented, leave it unidentified rather than guessing.

What the 2023 coverage establishes—and what it does not

The most securely documented takeaways are the Daytona’s revised dial and case details, the Sky-Dweller’s named dial-and-material combinations and calibre 9002, and the launch of the Perpetual 1908 collection. The wider roundup supplies a useful roster that also includes the Yacht-Master 42, GMT-Master II, Explorer 40 and Oyster Perpetual, but the material available here does not establish exact references or model-specific changes for those four lines.

No exact pictured reference, current price, stock status or retailer authorization is established. Readers considering a particular watch should verify its reference and configuration against Rolex documentation and confirm availability directly with a retailer.
