The announcement did not introduce the brand’s −2/+2 seconds-per-day standard: Rolex says that finished-watch precision tolerance has been part of the certification since its 2015 redefinition. The distinction matters because Rolex tests the movement before casing, then tests the complete watch after casing.
What changed in Rolex’s 2026 certification?
Rolex says the strengthened certification adds three criteria: resistance to magnetism, reliability and durability. These are integrated during design and manufacturing. Four existing criteria—precision, waterproofness, self-winding and autonomy, or power reserve—continue to be validated on the finished watch. Rolex presents the update as an expansion of the certification, not a new accuracy threshold. Rolex’s 2026 announcement describes the change.

Rolex lists the 2026 Oyster Perpetual 41 among its current watches, making it one example of the collection associated with the strengthened certification. Rolex’s new-watches page shows the model.
What does Rolex’s −2/+2 seconds per day mean?
It is Rolex’s stated precision tolerance for the complete, cased watch after its in-house test—not a measurement of the movement alone, and not a claim that every watch will keep identical time in every wearer’s conditions. Rolex describes the protocol as simulating conditions in wear. The figure is a tolerance, not a reported average from a sample of watches. Rolex’s precision explainer says the watch’s precision is assessed twice.

How do the Rolex and COSC testing stages differ?
| Stage | Object tested | When | Stated precision criterion |
|---|---|---|---|
| COSC chronometer certification | The movement | Before it is cased | −4 to +6 seconds per day, as cited by Rolex |
| Rolex in-house precision test | The complete watch | After casing | −2/+2 seconds per day |
The two figures apply to different objects and test stages. COSC’s chronometer certification concerns the movement; Rolex says its own finished-watch test follows that stage. Comparing the tolerances without noting what is being tested can make the difference sound like a simple change in one test, when it is a sequence of separate checks. Rolex explains its process on its precision page.
Which criteria are checked on the finished watch?
Rolex says its finished-watch validation covers the original four certification criteria:

- You can gift it to your friend
- Comes with Proper Binding
- Precision: the cased watch must meet Rolex’s −2/+2 seconds-per-day tolerance.
- Waterproofness: the watch is checked against its water-resistance requirements.
- Self-winding: the automatic winding function is assessed.
- Autonomy: the watch’s power reserve is checked.
The 2026 additions—magnetism resistance, reliability and durability—are incorporated during design and manufacturing rather than described as additional finished-watch criteria. Rolex’s announcement sets out this division.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does the Superlative Chronometer seal indicate?
Rolex says watches that pass its checks leave the manufacture with a green seal. Its newsroom describes Superlative Control as the in-house unit responsible for testing watches before they leave the manufacture, with checks during manufacturing and at final assembly. Rolex also says the certification is accompanied by an international five-year guarantee. These are Rolex’s descriptions of its own system; they do not independently quantify how the 2026 criteria affect performance across production. See the certification explainer and Rolex newsroom.
