Running Power Meters Explained: What the Watts Mean and Whether You Need One

Running power is a device-specific estimate of effort, not a direct measure of metabolic energy. Learn how watches and foot pods calculate it, how much to trust the watts, and whether you need extra hardware.

Running power is a device’s calculated estimate of your running effort, shown in watts—not a direct measurement of the energy your body uses. It can help you judge effort when hills or wind make pace misleading, but the number depends on the watch or sensor that produced it. For many runners, a watch that already displays power is enough; a separate foot pod is optional and mainly matters for specific sensor, indoor-running, or training-ecosystem needs.

What is running power?

Running power is a watt value intended to represent your effort or mechanical power while running. Consumer watches and sensors calculate it from measurements and a model; they do not directly measure total metabolic energy expenditure. Garmin’s Forerunner 165 Series manual, version 5 (June 2025), describes its running-power value as an estimate of power applied to the road surface, calculated using running dynamics, user mass, environmental information and other sensor data (Garmin Forerunner 165 Series manual).

The Stryd Team’s manufacturer-authored validation white paper puts the measurement issue plainly: “No device exists that measures ‘energy’ and ‘power’ directly; even cycling lacks this device.” That is the manufacturer’s explanation, not a statement from an independent standards body. In practice, treat running power as a device-specific estimate useful for tracking effort, rather than a direct readout of calories or a universally standardized quantity.

How do running power meters calculate the number?

Watch-based power

A watch estimates power from its own sensors and algorithms. Garmin says its model accounts for kinetic and potential power, vertical oscillation and local wind conditions. COROS says its wrist-based running power works on its watches without an extra accessory, although its support guidance says wrist-based power is unavailable in Indoor Run mode (Garmin Running Power; COROS: Training with Running Power on COROS Watch).

Foot-mounted power pod

A foot pod measures movement at the foot. Stryd describes its device as using gyroscopes and accelerometers to sense three-dimensional foot motion; this is a manufacturer description, not an independent comparison of methods (Stryd: The Stryd Difference).

Watch paired with an external sensor

Some setups combine watch data with a separate running sensor. Stryd also describes chest- or waist-worn sensors as another product approach. The inputs and calculation differ by system, so do not assume that two brands’ watt values share a common calibration scale.

When can running power help?

Power can be useful when pace does not reflect how hard you are working. On a climb, your pace may slow even as effort rises; on a descent or in wind, pace can change for reasons that do not map neatly to effort. Garmin says its power estimate can respond more quickly than heart rate and account for hills and wind in ways pace cannot. That is a practical rationale for using the metric, not evidence that it improves race results or prevents injury.

Use power alongside pace, heart rate and perceived effort, rather than replacing them. For training by power, keep the system consistent, use its own zones and check whether the default zones fit you. Garmin says its default zones use gender, weight and average ability, and may not match an individual runner. Compare trends under reasonably similar conditions; a change in device or model can change the displayed watts even if your fitness has not changed.

KETOTEK Watt Meter Power Meter Plug Electricity Usage Monitor for Home, Energy Monitor with LCD Display, Kilowatt Meter Socket Outlet, Voltage Amps Power Consumption Meter, Overload Protection
  • 【One-click switching interface】Choosing from 5 button to quick access different parameters. Press M to display KWH and electricity cost. Press + to display Watt (active power) and VA (apparent Power). Press OK to display true RMS voltage Vrms and true RMS current Arms. Press - to display Hz ( frequency) and PF (power factor). Press ↺ to display the maximum and minimum power. Press OK for 3s to display the complete accumulated time.
  • 【Monitor home appliances】Insert the watt meter between the appliance and the power outlet. This energy meter will measure the power consumption of the appliance and automatically calculate the electricity bill, only being calculated if the appliance is running at a power greater than 2 watts. Suitable for computers, games consoles, printers, TVs, refrigerators, washing machines, dryers, routers, etc.
  • 【Multiple protection】When the load power exceed the overload setting value, power consumption exceed KWH alarm setting value, electricity cost exceed cost alarm setting value, LCD displays "Overload", "KWh ALARM" or "COST ALARM" and LED light flashes continuously to warn user. The default overload power is 3680W ( 0~3680W adjustable ). In general, you need to set the overload power to 1800W before using. Ideal for monitoring the energy consumption of household appliances.
  • 【Data storage】The power consumption monitor plug has a built-in high-precision chip that stores data in the event of a power failure. It has a reset function and a function to delete measurement data but retain setting parameters for switching between multiple appliances. It can effectively monitor the electricity consumption, reduce electricity bills and save energy.
  • 【Upgraded LCD display】Wide viewing angles is great for reading and recording the data in any angles. No need to stand on the front of the display and bend over to read the numbers, especially if the energy meter is not at eye level, or is only viewable from an angle.

How accurate is running power?

There is no independent, cross-brand statistic in the cited evidence that establishes one universal accuracy percentage for running power meters. Accuracy depends on the device, the metric and the conditions being tested; findings for one product should not be generalized to every watch or pod.

What the independent Stryd study found

A 2020 peer-reviewed study compared Stryd readings with reference measurement systems. It found ground-contact time and leg-spring-stiffness values acceptable in the tested setup, while raising questions about absolute power. The authors concluded that Stryd could be useful for quantifying intensity during sub-maximal running, and called for further validity work at maximal and supra-maximal speeds, during direction changes and nonlinear accelerations, and on slopes (F. I. et al., “Validity of the Stryd Power Meter in Measuring Running Power,” Sports, 2020). The study protocol did not validate distance or pace because GPS and auto-calibration were not systematically disabled.

How to interpret Stryd’s manufacturer figures

A Stryd Team white paper from approximately 2018 reports a 96% correlation between Stryd power and metabolic energy expenditure (VO2). It describes force tests involving 13 runners and metabolic tests involving 9 runners. These are manufacturer-reported results from the paper’s protocols, not independent estimates of product-wide accuracy or a cross-brand benchmark. The same white paper reports 97.17% ground-time accuracy and 96.82% vertical-oscillation accuracy; those figures likewise come from a proprietary protocol and manufacturer-authored document (Stryd Team, “How to Lead the Pack: Running Power Meters & Quality Data”).

Do you need a separate running power pod?

Start with the watch you own. Garmin documents running power on the Forerunner 165 series, and COROS says its watches provide wrist-based power without an accessory. A separate pod is not automatically necessary if your watch already provides the power function you want.

The standard overload power is 3680W (adjustable from 0-3680W).

A foot pod may be relevant if you want foot-derived motion metrics, indoor power on a supported setup, or a particular sensor ecosystem. COROS’s instructions distinguish wrist-based power from Indoor Run power, which requires a Stryd pod; they also say Stryd zones require pairing that pod. Before buying, check current support for your exact watch, sensor, indoor mode and app: compatibility and integrations can change (COROS support instructions; Stryd Metrics).

How to compare running power options

What to compare Why it matters
Sensor location and method A watch-based estimate and a foot-mounted inertial pod use different inputs; their displayed watts should not be presumed interchangeable.
Indoor use and accessories Some watch-based power features are mode-specific. COROS, for example, distinguishes wrist power from pod-enabled Indoor Run power.
Compatibility and data flow Check the exact watch model, sensor pairing, supported metrics and whether zones or data reach the app you use. Consult current manufacturer documentation because integrations can change.
Metric goal If you want a consistent training trend, staying with one system is more useful than expecting absolute values to match another brand.
