One owner alleges that a swollen battery cracked the ring and made it difficult to remove; that specific physical-swelling claim has not been independently verified by Samsung, a regulator or teardown evidence reviewed here.
Samsung launched the Galaxy Ring in July 2024. Early buyers began reaching the one-year ownership mark in mid-2025, and reports appearing in 2026 describe failures after roughly six to 14 months.

What Galaxy Ring owners are reporting
The complaints fall into several different categories, and they should not all be described as battery swelling:

| Repeated failure after replacement | Potentially recurring hardware, charging or usage-related issue | Keep records of both units and every service case. |
Posts on Reddit describe rings that went from several days of use to a few hours, charging abnormalities and replacement units that allegedly deteriorated again within months. These are self-selected owner accounts, not controlled testing, so they show a recurring complaint pattern rather than a reliable failure rate.

The strongest swelling allegation appears in a Reddit discussion where an owner says a replacement ring developed a swollen battery, cracked in multiple places and became difficult to remove. That is a serious report, but it remains an owner allegation. The reviewed sources contain no authenticated laboratory examination, Samsung inspection report, regulator finding or independent teardown confirming that case.
Samsung’s public support pages reviewed for this article do not identify a widespread Galaxy Ring swelling defect, recall or service campaign.
How widespread is the problem?
No dependable public data establishes the percentage of Galaxy Rings affected. One complaint thread says its author had received around 20 contacts about possible battery problems and a potential class-action effort. That indicates concern among owners, but it is not a representative sample of all rings sold.

The defensible conclusion is that owner reports appear to be increasing and describe similar battery symptoms. It is not defensible to say that most Galaxy Rings fail after one year, that every first-generation unit is defective or that swelling is widespread.
Samsung’s battery-life promise
Samsung says the Galaxy Ring can provide up to seven days of battery life, depending on ring size and usage, when fully charged with its charging case. Samsung’s US documentation lists battery capacities of approximately 18 mAh for size 5 through 23.5 mAh for size 13, with a full recharge taking roughly 80 to 90 minutes depending on the regional support material.
Those are maximum or best-case operating figures—not a promise that the battery will retain the same capacity after a year. A gradual reduction in runtime can be normal for a small rechargeable battery. A sudden collapse from multiple days to a few hours, particularly alongside heat or charging abnormalities, deserves service evaluation.
Samsung’s official specifications and support information are available in its US battery documentation and Canadian battery-efficiency guide.

Battery failure is not the same as swelling
Rapid drain can result from ordinary wear, a defective cell, a charging-case problem, dirty or damaged contacts, or a software or battery-management issue. Missing health data can also result from pairing or connectivity problems. None of those symptoms proves that the battery has physically expanded.
Some owners have linked worsening performance to software updates, including an update reported in December 2025. The available accounts do not establish causation. Reports of replacement hardware developing similar symptoms also suggest that software alone may not explain every case, but that possibility has not been independently demonstrated either.
A loose fit can affect health measurements, as Samsung notes in its troubleshooting guidance, but it does not by itself explain catastrophic battery drain.
When to stop wearing or charging the ring
Stop troubleshooting immediately if the ring is unusually hot, visibly deformed, cracked, leaking, smoking, producing an unusual odor or becoming difficult to remove. Remove it only if it can be done safely without forcing it.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Do not squeeze, bend, puncture, pry open or disassemble the ring.
- Do not attempt a battery replacement.
- Do not continue charging a visibly damaged or swollen ring.
- Keep it away from combustible materials while waiting for manufacturer instructions.
- Contact Samsung or an authorized service provider.
Samsung’s manual warns that disassembling or puncturing the battery can cause fire or explosion. Do not put a potentially damaged lithium battery in household trash; ask Samsung, your local hazardous-waste program or an authorized recycling service for disposal instructions.
If swelling makes the ring difficult or impossible to remove from a finger, seek urgent medical or emergency assistance. Do not cut, pry or force it off at home.
Samsung’s troubleshooting path
For a ring that is losing battery life but shows no sign of physical damage, Samsung recommends a conventional troubleshooting sequence:

- Confirm that the ring is charged and properly worn.
- Restart it by pressing and holding the charging case’s multipurpose button for more than seven seconds.
- Synchronize health data before resetting. Unsynced data may be deleted.
- Reset the ring through Galaxy Wearable app → Reset, if necessary.
- Contact Samsung Support if the problem continues.
Do not reset a ring that appears swollen, cracked or otherwise damaged. A reset cannot make a physical battery fault safe. Samsung’s general Galaxy Ring troubleshooting instructions cover restarting, resetting and service, while its overheating guidance says to remove the ring and stop using it temporarily if it remains unusually warm, then contact support if overheating persists.

Before sending a failing ring to service—provided it is safe to handle—save:
- Photos and videos of cracks, bulging or deformation.
- Screenshots showing battery percentage and runtime.
- Samsung Members diagnostic results.
- The purchase receipt, order number and purchase country.
- The ring’s serial number.
- Service case numbers and written technician findings.
- The dates of every replacement and the paperwork supplied with each unit.
A dated timeline is especially useful: record normal runtime, the first sudden deterioration, charging behavior, any heat or physical change, and what happened after each repair or replacement.
Warranty and replacement outcomes vary
Owner reports describe free replacements, whole-unit replacement, out-of-warranty repair quotes and refusals of free service. Some accounts say a replacement later failed again, while others describe only limited additional coverage for the replacement unit. These reports come from different countries, retailers and purchase dates; they should not be treated as Samsung’s universal policy.
When contacting support, have the purchase date, retailer, proof of purchase, serial number and prior replacement history ready. Ask Samsung to state in writing whether it classifies the problem as a covered manufacturing defect, normal battery wear, accidental damage or “no fault found.” Also ask how the warranty applies to a replacement unit in your country.
Samsung’s US buying page has listed the Galaxy Ring at $399.99 and Samsung Care+ at an observed $49 for two years. Prices and terms can change, and coverage depends on the applicable country-specific agreement. Before purchasing coverage, check exclusions, deductibles, replacement limits and whether battery wear is treated differently from accidental damage or mechanical failure: Samsung Galaxy Ring buying page.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why battery replacement is difficult
The Galaxy Ring’s compact, sealed construction creates a repairability trade-off. iFixit has described smart rings as effectively non-repairable because reaching the battery can destroy the device. Owners also report that Samsung commonly replaces the entire ring rather than replacing its battery, although service procedures may differ by market and case.

That design helps make a small wearable possible, but it means a failed battery may lead to whole-device replacement rather than an inexpensive, user-replaceable cell. Buyers who prioritize repairability or predictable ownership beyond the standard warranty should treat that as a significant limitation.
Should you buy or keep using a Galaxy Ring?
Prospective buyers should not treat unverified swelling reports as proof that every Galaxy Ring is unsafe. They should, however, understand the risk profile: the product launched in July 2024, public owner reports describe abrupt battery failures around the first year, and the ring is not designed for straightforward battery replacement.
Recommended Free Tools
The Galaxy Ring remains a more rational choice for buyers who value Samsung Health and the wider Galaxy ecosystem. It is less compelling for anyone who expects an easily repairable wearable or cannot absorb the possibility of a whole-unit replacement. Samsung Care+ may be worth investigating where available, but it should not be assumed to cover ordinary battery wear or every swelling scenario.
Existing owners do not need to panic solely because runtime has declined gradually. They should document unusual performance and seek support. A ring that is hot, cracked, deformed, leaking or difficult to remove should be taken out of service immediately.
What remains unanswered
The available evidence does not establish how many Galaxy Rings have failed, whether a particular production batch is involved, whether charging accessories contribute to the reports, or whether replacement units share a common fault. It also does not show that the December 2025 software update caused the problem.
Samsung has not, in the reviewed public material, confirmed a widespread swelling defect, announced a Galaxy Ring recall or published a failure rate. Those unanswered questions are why the most accurate headline is about reported battery failures—not a confirmed product-wide swelling epidemic.
