Samsung Is Researching Non-Invasive Glucose Monitoring—but Galaxy Watch Support Is Unconfirmed

Samsung’s non-invasive glucose-monitoring research is real, but no Galaxy Watch currently measures blood glucose directly. Here is what is confirmed, what remains speculative, and what users can use now.

Samsung is researching a non-invasive, optically based continuous glucose monitor, but no Galaxy Watch with direct blood-glucose measurement has been officially launched or confirmed. Samsung has not announced a release date, compatible watch model, clinical accuracy, price, or U.S. regulatory clearance. As of August 18, 2026, buyers should not purchase a Galaxy Watch expecting it to replace a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) or blood-glucose meter.

What Samsung actually confirmed

At the Galaxy Tech Forum in January 2025, Samsung executive Dr. Hon Pak said the company was working on a non-invasive optically based continuous glucose monitor. He described the progress as potentially transformative, but did not provide a launch timetable.

The statement did not name a Galaxy Watch model, announce a product, publish clinical-performance results, identify supported countries, or confirm regulatory approval. The suggestion that Galaxy Watch devices “could finally get” the feature is therefore an inference about a possible destination for Samsung’s research—not confirmation of an upcoming retail feature. The original report contains no model-specific launch announcement.

Samsung’s 2026 connected-care announcement continues to discuss Galaxy Watch health research and existing features such as body-composition analysis, heart-rate monitoring, and ECG. It does not announce direct glucose measurement on a Galaxy Watch. Samsung’s announcement should not be read as a glucose-monitoring launch.

What “non-invasive” glucose monitoring means

A finger-stick meter analyzes a small blood sample. A conventional CGM uses a sensor inserted just under the skin to measure glucose in interstitial fluid. Both involve a physical connection to the body.

A non-invasive system would attempt to estimate glucose externally, in Samsung’s case using optical signals. That could make monitoring more passive and convenient, but “needle-free” does not automatically mean clinically accurate. Optical readings can be affected by movement, sweat, temperature, hydration, skin contact, tattoos, body composition, skin tone, and the wearer’s glucose range.

Samsung has not publicly supplied the accuracy data needed to judge whether its approach works reliably outside controlled conditions. A credible product would need evidence across different users and real-world situations, including exercise and changing watch fit. It would also need clear instructions for calibration, failed readings, contradictory symptoms, and loss of skin contact.

Can a Galaxy Watch measure glucose today?

There is no verified direct glucose measurement on a Galaxy Watch today. Galaxy Watch health features do not establish that the watch can measure blood glucose optically.

A Galaxy phone or watch may display information imported from an external glucose meter or CGM app, depending on the brand, phone, operating system, country, and wearable compatibility. That is different from the watch measuring glucose itself. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration distinguishes between unauthorized standalone glucose claims and apps that display readings from an authorized device.

Samsung also documents NFC recognition problems affecting some glucose meters after Android 16 and One UI 8 updates. Its suggested workaround is to open the glucose app, go to Settings → Connections → NFC and Contactless Payments, turn NFC off and on again, and retry recognition. Samsung says the relevant software update is rolling out gradually. This illustrates that Samsung devices can interact with glucose-monitoring hardware without becoming glucose sensors themselves. Could older Galaxy Watches get the feature through software?

Samsung has not said which Galaxy Watch models, if any, would support its research technology. Compatibility cannot be inferred from a watch receiving a future One UI Watch update.

A true optical glucose system could require new emitters and detectors, different sensor geometry, more capable signal processing, calibration hardware, and algorithms validated for that particular configuration. Even if Samsung eventually commercializes the technology, it may be limited to future hardware rather than existing Galaxy Watch models.

Software could improve signal processing on compatible hardware, but it cannot add missing optical components. Claims that a Galaxy Watch 8, Watch9, Watch Ultra2, or another named model will definitely receive glucose monitoring should be treated as speculation unless Samsung identifies the model and hardware.

The medical and regulatory boundary

In the United States, the FDA says it has not authorized, cleared, or approved any smartwatch or smart ring intended to measure or estimate blood glucose on its own without piercing the skin. This is a U.S.-specific regulatory position; rules and product availability can differ in other countries. Read the FDA safety communication.

The regulatory question depends heavily on the product’s intended claims. A general-wellness estimate, a glucose-related trend, and a device intended to support diabetes management are not equivalent. A system used for medication or insulin decisions would require a much higher level of clinical and regulatory evidence than a feature marketed only for lifestyle insights.

The FDA warns that inaccurate glucose information can result in incorrect medication decisions, dangerously low blood glucose, coma, or death. Anyone using insulin or other glucose-lowering medication should follow their clinician’s instructions and use an authorized glucose-monitoring system rather than relying on an unapproved smartwatch estimate.

How this would differ from a CGM

A medical CGM such as Dexcom G7 or Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus uses an external sensor placed on or under the skin, depending on the system. CGMs can provide continuous or near-continuous readings, trend arrows, high and low alerts, and—in supported setups—data sharing with caregivers or clinicians.

A future Galaxy Watch feature could be complementary rather than a replacement. It might offer convenient background estimates or trends, while a validated CGM remains the system used for treatment decisions. That distinction cannot be resolved until Samsung publishes clinical data, labeling, and regulatory details.

What Galaxy Watch users can use now

  • CGMs: Products such as Dexcom G7 and FreeStyle Libre can provide continuous glucose information, subject to regional availability, prescription rules, phone compatibility, and clinician guidance.
  • Blood-glucose meters: Traditional meters provide point-in-time readings. Some communicate with phones through Bluetooth or NFC, but the watch is displaying data from the meter rather than measuring glucose itself.
  • Compatible apps and wearables: Some CGM ecosystems may show readings or alerts on a compatible smartphone or wearable. Support varies by CGM brand, Galaxy Watch model, phone, operating system, country, and app version.
  • Samsung Health: It may serve as part of a broader health-data workflow where supported, but its presence on a phone or watch does not make the watch a glucose monitor.

For critical alerts, users should continue following the glucose-device manufacturer’s approved setup. The FDA has warned that phone settings, software updates, connected accessories, Bluetooth problems, app sleeping, or focus modes can interfere with diabetes-device alerts. After updates or device changes, recheck alert settings and confirm that notifications work. FDA alert guidance explains the risk.

What could go wrong with a future watch-based estimate?

  • An optical estimate could differ materially from a blood measurement.
  • Performance could degrade during exercise, sweating, movement, or loose watch fit.
  • A user could mistake a wellness estimate for treatment-grade data.
  • The watch or phone could lose connectivity, battery power, or access to alerts.
  • A feature could be unavailable in the user’s country or incompatible with their phone.
  • An update could alter notifications or break communication with an external meter.
  • A user could delay treatment because a watch reading conflicts with symptoms.

Convenience would also involve trade-offs. Frequent optical sampling could affect battery life, and a future service might require calibration, subscriptions, replacement supplies, or a particular Samsung ecosystem. A watch that provides passive trends would not necessarily be suitable for insulin dosing.

What would confirm a genuine Galaxy Watch glucose launch?

Readers should look for more than a product teaser or executive comment. A properly confirmed launch would identify:

  1. The exact Galaxy Watch model and sensor hardware.
  2. Whether the system directly measures glucose or only estimates trends or risk.
  3. Published clinical-performance data across relevant glucose ranges and user groups.
  4. Regulatory authorization or clearance in each market where medical claims are made.
  5. Whether readings can be used for medication or insulin decisions.
  6. Calibration requirements and instructions for conflicting readings.
  7. Supported countries, phones, operating systems, and watch versions.
  8. Pricing, subscriptions, recurring supplies, and battery expectations.
  9. How alerts work when the phone is disconnected or the watch battery dies.

Until those details appear, the accurate description remains: Samsung is researching non-invasive glucose monitoring, but Galaxy Watch support is unconfirmed.
