Samsung says tattoo ink can absorb infrared light used by Galaxy Watch wear detection and optical health sensors. That can make a watch fail to recognize it is being worn or interfere with readings such as heart rate, stress and blood oxygen. Samsung’s recommended workaround is to wear the watch on an untattooed arm. A tattoo is a documented risk, not proof that every tattoo or Galaxy Watch model will fail.
Why a tattoo can stop a Galaxy Watch from recognizing your wrist
Galaxy Watch wear detection uses infrared light reflected from the skin. Samsung explains that tattoo pigments may absorb that light, disrupting the watch’s ability to tell that it is being worn. The same interference can affect optical measurements, which use sensors on the back of the watch. Samsung Japan lists heart rate, stress and blood oxygen (SpO2), as well as wear detection, among functions that may not work normally on tattooed skin. Samsung Japan’s support guidance was updated May 20, 2026.
This does not establish that all tattoos cause problems, or that all models and features respond alike. Samsung does not provide a tattoo-specific failure rate. The effect on a particular watch can depend on whether its sensors have clear, reliable contact with skin, but Samsung’s guidance does not promise that changing fit or settings will make a tattooed area readable.
What to try before changing wrists
First rule out ordinary fit or sensor issues. Samsung’s general heart-rate troubleshooting advice can help with poor readings, though it is not a guaranteed fix for tattoo interference.

- Check the fit and position. Wear the watch snugly just above the wrist bone so the sensors stay in contact with your skin. It should be comfortable, not excessively tight. If readings remain poor, adjust the position slightly.
- Clean the watch’s back. Wipe the sensor area with a clean, soft, dry cloth if it is dirty.
- Remove sensor plastic. Check that no protective film remains over the sensors.
- Keep still during a measurement. Movement can interfere with readings. Cold temperatures and anything obstructing contact between the sensor and wrist can also affect results.
These checks address common measurement problems. If the sensor is over tattooed skin and wear detection or readings still fail, they do not establish that the watch can reliably measure through the ink. Samsung’s heart-rate support page covers these general measurement tips.
What is the most reliable workaround?
Samsung recommends wearing the watch on an untattooed arm. This is the clearest manufacturer-supported option when tattooed skin prevents wear recognition or interferes with optical readings. A tighter band or a changed position may improve ordinary sensor contact, but Samsung does not present either as a dependable way to overcome tattoo interference.

Can you turn off wrist detection?
A Samsung Community accepted answer dated July 17, 2024, describes turning off wrist detection in the watch’s settings as a way for a Galaxy Watch 7 user to keep receiving notifications when tattooed skin prevents the watch from recognizing wear. This is a community-reported option, not a manufacturer-verified tattoo fix; settings and menu paths may vary by watch model and software, so check the current on-device settings.
Disabling wrist detection concerns wear recognition and notification behavior. It does not show that the optical sensors will then read heart rate, stress or blood oxygen through a tattoo. The Watch 7 community discussion is the source for the reported option.

What about ECG and irregular-heart-rhythm features?
Samsung’s US instructions for its ECG Monitor Application and Irregular Heart Rhythm Notification (IHRN) list a dark wrist tattoo among factors that can impair detection; tattoo or other skin pigmentation can also contribute to a poor ECG recording. For a poor recording, Samsung advises cleaning the watch back and contact areas, ensuring snug contact, staying still and trying a position slightly away from the wrist bone toward the elbow. These steps may help with recording conditions, but they do not establish that ECG will work through tattooed skin.
ECG and IHRN eligibility and availability depend on compatible watch and phone versions and regional availability. Samsung’s US instructions are not universal availability guidance. Samsung’s ECG and IHRN instructions provide the feature-specific details.

Should you try a sensor spacer or bumper?
Some Samsung Community users have described placing silicone bumpers or epoxy dots near the rear sensors. These are individual experiments, not Samsung recommendations; their effect on skin contact, measurements and other watch functions has not been established. They should not be treated as a reliable fix. Samsung’s supported recommendation remains wearing the watch on an untattooed arm.
