Samsung announced both watches on July 10, 2024, and general availability began July 24, 2024, in select markets. The Ultra was Samsung’s first smartwatch to use the Ultra name.
Recommended Free Tools
Both use the five-core, 3nm Exynos W1000 processor, 2GB of RAM, Wear OS 5 with One UI 6 Watch, sapphire-crystal displays, Samsung’s BioActive sensor and dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS. The Ultra is therefore not a completely different health or software platform; its premium is mainly for the larger battery, tougher case, outdoor controls and LTE-first configuration. Samsung’s launch specifications provide the underlying hardware details.

Price and model breakdown
The original U.S. launch prices were:
- Galaxy Watch7 40mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: $299.99
- Galaxy Watch7 40mm LTE: $349.99
- Galaxy Watch7 44mm Bluetooth/Wi-Fi: $329.99
- Galaxy Watch7 44mm LTE: $379.99
- Galaxy Watch Ultra 47mm LTE: $649.99
Those are launch MSRPs, not guaranteed 2026 selling prices. Samsung’s official June 2025 MSRP sheet listed the Watch7 Bluetooth models at $299.99 for 40mm and $329.99 for 44mm. Its September 2025 sheet listed lower Bluetooth MSRPs of $249.99 and $279.99 respectively, while the Ultra remained listed at $649.99. Retail sales, refurbished pricing, carrier offers and trade-in deals can be different.
For a current purchase, compare a discounted Watch7 with the Galaxy Watch8 family rather than assuming the older model is automatically cheaper. Samsung’s September 2025 MSRP reference listed the Watch8 at $349.99 for 40mm Bluetooth, $379.99 for 44mm Bluetooth and $399.99–$429.99 for LTE versions. The same document listed the Galaxy Watch8 Classic at $499.99 Bluetooth and $549.99 LTE, and the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025) refresh at $649.99 for listed refresh SKUs. See Samsung’s September 2025 MSRP sheet for the dated reference.
Trade-in credits are not the same as an unconditional discount. Samsung can reverse or charge back a credit if the submitted device fails eligibility checks or is not sent within the stated period. Check the terms at Samsung’s watch store.
Colors
Galaxy Watch7
The original launch colors were:
- 40mm: Green and Cream
- 44mm: Green and Silver
Samsung’s comparison material groups Watch7 colors as Green, Silver and Cream, but availability can vary by country, case size, LTE or Bluetooth edition and retailer.
Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024)
The first-generation Ultra was offered in Titanium Gray, Titanium Silver and Titanium White. Titanium Blue belongs to later Ultra listings and should not be treated as an original 2024 color. The 2025 Ultra refresh has separate model numbers and listings.
Design, size and comfort
The Watch7 has Samsung’s familiar round-watch design and comes in two case sizes. The 40mm version is substantially lighter and more practical for small wrists, while the 44mm model provides a larger display and a bigger battery without approaching the Ultra’s bulk.
The Ultra has a circular display inside a rounded-square, or “squircle,” outer case. Its 47mm body is 12.1mm thick and weighs 60.5g before adding the band. That is more than twice the weight of the 40mm Watch7 and nearly twice the weight of the 44mm model. It can feel secure and substantial outdoors, but may overhang a small wrist or become uncomfortable during sleep and long runs.
The Ultra adds a dedicated Quick Button for rapid workout and action functions. The Watch7 has Home and Back buttons but no equivalent Ultra-style control. Choose the Ultra’s physical design because you need it—not merely because its specifications are larger.

- Next-Generation 3nm Processor: Exynos W1000 chipset delivers significantly faster performance and smoother app navigation.
Display and durability
All three versions use Super AMOLED panels, sapphire crystal and full-color always-on display support. The 44mm Watch7 and Ultra both use a 1.5-inch 480 × 480 display; the 40mm Watch7 uses a 1.3-inch 432 × 432 panel.
The Watch7 is rated at 5ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H. The Ultra raises the water-resistance rating to 10ATM and also carries IP68 and MIL-STD-810H ratings, alongside additional claims aimed at ocean swimming, operating temperature and altitude.
These ratings do not make either watch permanently waterproof or immune to damage. ATM ratings are not permission for unlimited depth or every water sport. Water resistance can decline after impacts, repairs, chemical exposure and normal wear. Follow Samsung’s activity restrictions, and rinse and dry the watch after salt water or other residue.

Performance, software and storage
The Watch7 and 2024 Ultra launched on the same core software and processor platform: Exynos W1000, 2GB RAM, Wear OS 5 and One UI 6 Watch. Both support Wear OS apps, notifications, calls on compatible configurations, Samsung Wallet-related functions where supported and Samsung Health features.
Storage requires particular care. Samsung’s original 2024 launch specifications listed 32GB for both watches. Samsung’s later comparison page lists the Ultra with 64GB while continuing to list the Watch7 at 32GB. Because the documents conflict, verify the exact model number and current product listing before purchase rather than assuming every 2024 Ultra has 64GB. Use Samsung’s comparison page as a current reference, but check the individual SKU.
Health and fitness features
The two watches share Samsung’s main health platform. Depending on region, phone and software configuration, both support:
- Energy Score with Galaxy AI and wellness guidance
- Heart-rate monitoring and personalized heart-rate zones
- Sleep tracking, sleep coaching and sleep-apnea detection
- Irregular heart-rhythm notifications and ECG
- Blood-oxygen and skin-temperature measurements
- Body-composition analysis
- Automatic workout detection and cycle tracking
- Dual-frequency GPS
The sensor suite includes accelerometer, gyroscope, barometer, geomagnetic or compass and ambient-light sensors, in addition to Samsung’s BioActive health sensor.

Medical and regional limitations
ECG, irregular-rhythm alerts, blood oxygen and sleep-apnea features should not be treated as universal diagnoses. Availability can depend on country, regulatory authorization, compatible Galaxy hardware, Android version, Samsung Health version and Samsung account requirements.
Samsung describes sleep-apnea detection as an over-the-counter software medical application in supported markets. Its comparison material notes that it requires a compatible smartphone and Samsung Health version. It is not a substitute for evaluation by a clinician. Check the requirements for your country and phone before buying, particularly if this feature is the reason for your purchase.
Battery life and charging
Battery capacity is the clearest hardware advantage for the Ultra:

- Watch7 40mm: 300mAh
- Watch7 44mm: 425mAh
- Watch Ultra: 590mAh
Samsung claimed up to 100 hours in Power Saving mode and up to 48 hours in Exercise Power Saving mode for the Ultra. These are mode-specific “up to” figures, not guaranteed mixed-use results.
Always-on display use, LTE, GPS, screen brightness, notifications, music playback, sleep tracking, cellular signal strength, workout settings, software updates and battery age all affect runtime. The 40mm Watch7 is the weakest option for endurance. The 44mm Watch7 is the sensible middle ground, while the Ultra is the better choice for multi-day outdoor use if its weight is acceptable.
All charging claims and accessories should be checked against the exact model. Do not assume that an older Galaxy Watch charger or third-party puck delivers identical charging performance without verifying compatibility.
LTE, GPS and phone-free use
Bluetooth/Wi-Fi Watch7 models are the cheaper and simpler choice when you normally carry your phone. LTE Watch7 versions add cellular connectivity, and LTE is standard on the Ultra. Both generations support Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS, including Samsung’s dual-frequency L1/L5 positioning system.

Activation normally requires a compatible carrier, a wearable line or qualifying cellular plan, support for the exact model and sometimes an activation fee. Signal strength also affects battery life.

The Ultra is the stronger fit for long hikes, trail running, camping and navigation because its battery reserve and outdoor-oriented controls give it more margin. That does not automatically make its GPS results or health data superior in every situation.
Compatibility: pairing is not the same as full feature support
Samsung’s launch specifications state that both watches require Android 11 or later and more than 1.5GB of phone memory. Samsung’s current comparison material separately lists requirements for some AI and sleep-apnea functions, including Android 10 or later, at least 2GB of RAM and Samsung Health 6.22 or later.
These figures describe different layers of compatibility. A phone may be able to pair with the watch while still lacking a Samsung-exclusive health or AI feature. Requirements can also change with app and operating-system updates.
Samsung Galaxy phones are the safest choice for full functionality. Non-Samsung Android phones may support the basic Wear OS experience but not every Samsung Health, ECG, AI or medical-adjacent feature. iPhone users should not buy either watch expecting Apple Watch-style iOS support: these are Android-focused Wear OS products.
Bands and accessories
Replacement bands are available for both watches, but the Ultra’s case and rugged strap ecosystem are a meaningful accessory consideration. Do not assume that every older Galaxy Watch band fits the Ultra mechanically or looks correct on its larger case.
Verify band width, connector design, case clearance and the exact model before ordering a third-party strap. Also check charging compatibility rather than assuming that every older Galaxy Watch charger provides the intended result.

Choose the 40mm Galaxy Watch7 if:
- You want the lowest launch-price tier or a light everyday watch.
- You have a small or medium wrist.
- You want Samsung’s core health and Wear OS features without Ultra-level bulk.
- You usually carry your phone and do not need LTE.
- You prefer a conventional round-watch appearance.
Choose the 44mm Galaxy Watch7 if:
- You want the Watch7 platform with better battery capacity.
- You prefer a larger display.
- You do not need titanium, 10ATM resistance or the Quick Button.
- You want a compromise between comfort and endurance.
Choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024) if:
- You regularly hike, camp, trail-run, swim outdoors or train for long sessions.
- You need the largest battery reserve.
- You want titanium construction, LTE as standard and the Quick Button.
- You can comfortably wear a 47mm, 60.5g watch.
- You find it meaningfully cheaper than the newer Ultra refresh.
Reconsider the Ultra if:
- You sleep in your watch and dislike heavy cases.
- You have a small wrist.
- Your needs are mainly notifications, alarms, payments and basic health tracking.
- You expect a major everyday software advantage over the Watch7.
- The 2024 Ultra costs close to the 2025 Ultra or another newer model.
2026 buying context: Watch8 and the 2025 Ultra
Important: the Watch7 and first-generation Ultra are now older-generation watches. Before buying, compare a discounted Watch7 with Galaxy Watch8, and compare the 2024 Ultra with the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025) refresh. If the older Ultra is still near its $649.99 official MSRP, the newer Ultra is usually the more logical model to investigate first.
The Watch8 family is the current mainstream alternative in this comparison’s 2026 context, while the 2025 Ultra refresh is the relevant newer rugged alternative. Later colors, storage listings and model numbers should not be retroactively assigned to the 2024 Ultra. Samsung’s official comparison page and dated MSRP documents are the best places to verify the exact configuration, price and availability before ordering.

- Next-Generation 3nm Processor: Exynos W1000 chipset delivers significantly faster performance and smoother app navigation.
Verdict
For most Android users, buy the Galaxy Watch7—preferably the 44mm version if battery life matters. It is lighter, less expensive and offers most of the same health and smartwatch software as the Ultra. Buy the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2024) only when its 590mAh battery, titanium case, 10ATM rating, LTE connectivity and outdoor controls solve a real problem. In 2026, make either purchase only after checking the price and feature gap against Galaxy Watch8 and the Galaxy Watch Ultra (2025).
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Galaxy Watch Ultra worth the extra money over the Watch7?
Only if you need its 590mAh battery, titanium construction, LTE standard, Quick Button or tougher 10ATM-rated design. For ordinary notifications, sleep tracking and Samsung Health features, the Watch7 delivers most of the same core experience.
Is the Galaxy Watch7 good for sleep tracking?
Yes, but the 40mm Watch7 is lighter and more comfortable for overnight wear than the 60.5g Ultra. Sleep-apnea detection and related features depend on supported markets, compatible Galaxy hardware and software requirements.
Which watch lasts longer between charges?
The Ultra has the largest battery. Samsung’s official claims are up to 100 hours in Power Saving mode and 48 hours in Exercise Power Saving mode; actual mixed-use battery life varies with LTE, GPS, display settings and other factors.
Can either watch work with an iPhone?
Neither should be purchased for iPhone use. Both are Android-focused Wear OS watches, with the best feature support on compatible Samsung Galaxy phones.
Does the Ultra have better health sensors than the Watch7?
The two watches share Samsung’s core BioActive health platform and many of the same health features. The Ultra’s major advantages are its battery, rugged case, controls and outdoor-oriented design.
Does the Galaxy Watch7 support LTE?
Yes. LTE versions are available in both 40mm and 44mm sizes. LTE requires a compatible carrier and usually a separate wearable plan or qualifying cellular service.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Are Galaxy Watch7 bands compatible with the Ultra?
Do not assume they are. Verify the exact connector, band dimensions and case clearance; the Ultra uses a dedicated rugged strap ecosystem.
Is sleep-apnea detection available everywhere?
No. Availability depends on country, regulatory authorization, compatible phone hardware, Samsung Health and other software requirements. It is not a substitute for a clinical diagnosis.
Which model is better for small wrists?
The 40mm Watch7 is the best fit. The 44mm Watch7 may work for medium wrists, while the 47mm Ultra is substantially thicker and heavier and may overhang smaller wrists.
Should you buy the 2024 Ultra or the 2025 Ultra?
Compare the exact prices and specifications first. If the 2024 model is close to the newer refresh’s price, the 2025 Ultra is the safer starting point because it is the newer generation. Do not assume later colors or storage listings apply to the 2024 model.
