Its large display, LTE connectivity, health features, titanium construction and dual-frequency GPS make it well suited to everyday fitness, day hikes, trail running, cycling and swimming. Serious backcountry users, however, may find its offline navigation, route management, expedition endurance and training tools too shallow.
This review concerns the original 2024 Galaxy Watch Ultra. Samsung also sells a refreshed 2025 model, with updated model numbers and newer One UI Watch software, so features and interface details should not be treated as identical across generations.

What is the Galaxy Watch Ultra?
The Galaxy Watch Ultra was Samsung’s first Ultra-branded Galaxy Watch, positioned above the regular Galaxy Watch range as a larger, tougher and more premium wearable. It comes in a single 47mm case size, uses a titanium body, adds LTE as a central part of the proposition and carries a 590mAh battery. Samsung also lists dual-frequency GPS, 10 ATM water resistance, IP68 protection and MIL-STD-810H testing among its headline specifications. Samsung’s specifications confirm the hardware, but specifications alone do not prove real-world GPS accuracy, comfort or durability.
The Ultra competes with Garmin and Apple on some features, but it is not designed around exactly the same priorities. It is primarily a powerful Wear OS smartwatch for Galaxy-phone owners that happens to have rugged hardware. Garmin’s fēnix watches, by contrast, are built more fundamentally around long-duration outdoor use, route navigation, training analysis and minimal dependence on a phone or charger.

| Category | Galaxy Watch Ultra’s position |
|---|---|
| Smartwatch features | Strong |
| Galaxy-phone integration | Strong |
| Display | Large and designed for outdoor readability |
| Health and fitness | Broad, though some features depend on Samsung phones and regions |
| LTE independence | Strong when activated with a compatible carrier plan |
| Battery endurance | Better than ordinary Galaxy Watches, but highly mode-dependent |
| Navigation and expedition tools | Less complete than dedicated adventure watches |
The display is a major strength
The 47mm format gives the Ultra considerably more visual space than a conventional smartwatch. That matters when a workout screen has to show pace, heart rate, distance and time at once, or when a hiker is checking a map or compass without reaching for a phone. The large case also gives the watch a conspicuous, premium presence that some users will appreciate and others will find excessive.
Samsung promotes the display for outdoor use, but the supplied specifications do not establish a laboratory brightness result. It is therefore safer to describe the screen as one of the Ultra’s strongest practical features rather than call it definitively the brightest smartwatch display. Always-on behavior, glare, night visibility and touch response in rain or with wet fingers depend on settings and conditions.
The physical controls help compensate for the limitations of a touchscreen outdoors. Samsung’s rotating Quick Button provides rapid access to selected functions, while the other buttons are useful when sweat, rain, gloves or cold weather make swiping awkward. Even so, a touchscreen remains less dependable than a buttons-first interface in consistently wet or gloved conditions.

Neither makes the watch indestructible. The case is also large enough to be uncomfortable on smaller wrists, particularly during sleep or activities involving a backpack cuff, climbing gear or gloves.
Fast, feature-rich everyday performance
The Ultra’s strongest argument is its smartwatch experience. Wear OS provides notifications, calls, music, apps and familiar Google and Samsung services in a way that a dedicated adventure computer generally does not. LTE can allow calls, messages and selected connected functions when the phone is not nearby, provided the watch has been activated with a compatible carrier plan and the location has network coverage.
Setup uses Samsung’s Galaxy Wearable and Samsung Health apps. The exact feature set can vary according to phone, Android version, region and carrier. Galaxy owners should expect the most complete integration; buyers using another Android phone should check Samsung’s current compatibility requirements before purchase. iPhone owners should not assume support. The Ultra is fundamentally an Android and Galaxy ecosystem product, not an Apple Watch alternative.
Responsiveness is important on a watch that combines apps, calls, maps and workouts. The Ultra has the hardware to feel substantially more capable than basic fitness trackers, but software reliability is just as important as processor speed. Workout start and save behavior, LTE calls, notification delivery and map availability can change with software updates, connectivity and the paired phone.

The Ultra covers the mainstream fitness requirements well: heart-rate tracking, sleep monitoring, automatic workout detection, running and cycling activities, swimming, GPS recording and Samsung Health history. ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, body-composition measurements and other advanced health features may be useful additions, but availability depends on region, phone and regulatory approval.

- YOUR BODY SPEAKS. LISTEN WITH VITALS: Understand your body better with Vitals⁹–it’s built to track 5 different health metrics while you sleep, catch shifts from your usual patterns, and also provide tailored guidance based on the insights.⁸
Sensor availability should not be confused with guaranteed accuracy. Heart-rate performance varies with fit, movement and workout intensity. GPS performance depends on buildings, trees, terrain and satellite conditions. Samsung’s inclusion of dual-frequency GPS confirms supported hardware; it does not, by itself, prove that every recorded route will match a dedicated GPS computer.
For ordinary runs, rides, gym sessions, walks and pool workouts, the Ultra offers a broad and convenient collection of metrics. Its limitation is depth rather than breadth. Athletes who want highly developed training-load analysis, recovery guidance, structured endurance planning or long-term expedition data may find Garmin’s platform more mature.
Battery life depends on the mode
The 590mAh battery is a meaningful upgrade over the capacity typically associated with Samsung’s regular watches, but “battery life” is not one fixed number. Always-on display, continuous sensors, GPS, LTE, music playback, notifications and temperature can all change endurance dramatically.

Samsung has promoted up to 100 hours in Power Saving mode and up to 48 hours in Exercise Power Saving mode. Those are manufacturer claims for specific reduced-power conditions, not promises of normal smartwatch or continuous-GPS endurance. Samsung’s product information should be read with those mode limitations in mind.
For a buyer, the practical questions are more specific:
- Can it last through a normal day with the always-on display, notifications and health tracking enabled?
- How much charge does a long GPS workout consume?
- How quickly does LTE drain the battery when the phone is absent?
- Can it track sleep and still have enough charge for the next day?
- Will it complete a weekend away from a charger without switching to restrictive power-saving modes?
The Ultra is a better endurance proposition than an ordinary Galaxy Watch, but it should not automatically be treated as a multiday expedition watch. GPS plus LTE, cold weather and extended screen use can make the advertised maximum irrelevant.
Adventure tools are the decisive weakness
The Galaxy Watch Ultra has outdoor hardware. It has GPS, a compass, barometric and weather-related functions, ruggedization and safety controls. The issue is whether those pieces form a complete, dependable adventure system. For serious navigation and remote travel, the answer is less convincing than it is for everyday fitness.
Navigation and maps
GPS hardware is only the starting point. A serious adventure watch also needs a dependable workflow for creating or importing routes, storing them offline, displaying useful map detail, following a breadcrumb trail, providing turn guidance and handling a wrong turn without requiring a phone signal.

Before buying, verify the exact software and region for the features you need:
- Can routes be imported in the format you already use?
- Are maps stored on the watch or streamed through the phone?
- Are detailed topographic maps available offline?
- Does route guidance continue when the phone is left behind?
- Can the watch reroute, or does it simply show a saved line?
- Do third-party apps provide the missing functions, and do they work without cellular coverage?
A route visible on a phone is not necessarily a route available offline on the watch. That distinction matters in forests, mountains and remote areas. Garmin’s fēnix family generally offers a more self-contained navigation and route-management experience, although the precise map and feature set varies by model.
Controls in difficult conditions
The Quick Button and conventional buttons are useful additions, but the Ultra still presents a smartwatch-style touchscreen experience. Rain, sweat, cold and gloves expose the difference between a large touch display and a purpose-built buttons-first outdoor watch. For occasional outdoor use, this may be acceptable. For repeated navigation in bad weather, it is a meaningful trade-off.

Emergency SOS, fall detection, incident features and a siren or quick-access safety control can add reassurance. Their usefulness depends on the specific feature, region, phone connection, LTE activation and the presence of compatible emergency services. LTE is not satellite communication. In a remote valley or mountain area without cellular coverage, the Ultra cannot provide the same safety net as a satellite communicator.
No smartwatch should be treated as a substitute for a proper emergency plan, map, navigation backup and communication device on serious trips.
Altitude, weather and sensors
The Ultra’s compass, barometer, altimeter and weather functions are relevant to outdoor users, but they are not magic replacements for field instruments. Compass readings require calibration and can be affected by nearby metal or electronic equipment. Barometric elevation can shift with weather pressure, and storm alerts or forecasts depend on their data source and connectivity. Weather updates may require the phone or LTE connection.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Durability and water resistance
Samsung lists 10 ATM, IP68 and MIL-STD-810H classifications. These indicate defined test conditions, not unlimited protection. Samsung’s own explanatory material describes the limits of its water-resistance and durability claims. The official guidance should take precedence over casual descriptions such as “indestructible” or “safe for any diving.”
Swimming and ordinary exposure to water are a different proposition from scuba, technical diving, high-pressure water or repeated saltwater abuse. Rinse the watch after saltwater use, follow Samsung’s maintenance guidance and avoid assuming that a rating eliminates the effects of impact, temperature changes or aging seals. A 10 ATM rating should not be turned into a blanket “dive watch” claim without checking the specific activity and manufacturer instructions.

2024 original versus 2025 refresh
The original review was published on August 29, 2024, and concerns Samsung’s first-generation Ultra. Samsung’s current pages list refreshed 2025 models, including new model numbers and colors, and promote One UI 8 Watch and a newer processor. The 2025 purchase listing should be used to identify that hardware rather than silently merging it with the 2024 review unit.
The refresh complicates a 2026 buying decision. Later software can improve menus, health features and app behavior, but it does not prove that the original review unit had those capabilities. Conversely, a 2025 model should not inherit every criticism of the 2024 software without checking its installed version and model number. When comparing a discounted original with a new refresh, confirm warranty, LTE carrier compatibility, storage and the software currently available in your region.
Price and alternatives
Samsung’s U.S. MSRP documents list the LTE Galaxy Watch Ultra at $649.99, including refreshed Ultra model numbers in the June 2026 file. That is an MSRP, not a universal current selling price; trade-ins, bundles and promotions can change the value substantially. Check the current Samsung price file and retailer terms before treating the figure as a transaction price.
Recommended Free Tools
Garmin fēnix
A Garmin fēnix is usually the more appropriate choice for serious hikers, trail runners, endurance athletes and multiday trips. Garmin’s outdoor range generally puts more emphasis on offline navigation, route handling, long battery life and training depth. The trade-off is a less app-centric smartwatch experience and weaker integration with Samsung’s phone and health ecosystem. Garmin’s outdoor range includes multiple models, so features must be compared model by model.
Apple Watch Ultra 2
Apple Watch Ultra 2 is the relevant premium alternative for iPhone owners, but it is not a practical substitute for Android or Samsung users. Apple’s official product page has the current compatibility and pricing information.
Samsung’s regular Galaxy Watch line
Galaxy Watch8 or Watch8 Classic is a better fit for buyers who mainly want Samsung notifications, health tracking and everyday smartwatch functions without a 47mm titanium case. The trade-off is a smaller battery and less rugged outdoor hardware. Check the current model specifications and prices through Samsung’s wearable hub.
Discounted original Ultra stock
A discounted 2024 Ultra can make sense if you want the display, LTE and rugged design but do not need every feature associated with the refreshed model. Verify the model number, seller authorization, warranty, return policy, battery condition and carrier compatibility. Do not assume that a discounted 2024 watch behaves exactly like the 2025 refresh.

Who should buy the Galaxy Watch Ultra?
- Buy it if you use a Samsung Galaxy phone and want a large, readable premium smartwatch.
- Buy it if LTE calls, messages, music and apps matter as much as fitness tracking.
- Buy it if your outdoor activities are day hikes, trail runs, cycling, swimming and general fitness.
- Consider it carefully if you have a small wrist or sleep with your watch; the 47mm case is substantial.
- Choose Garmin instead if you need detailed offline topo navigation, multiday endurance, expedition features or deep training and recovery analytics.
- Choose another platform if you use an iPhone or require satellite communication.
The right comparison is not “Samsung versus Garmin” in the abstract. A Galaxy owner who hikes on weekends may value LTE, notifications, health features and a bright display more than a backpacker values route management and a week of battery life. The watch is strong in the first scenario and less convincing in the second.
