Announced on July 22, 2026, the Watch9 targets everyday health, sleep, notifications, and fitness, while the Ultra2 is built around endurance training, outdoor sports, a much larger battery, and diving-related functions.
Samsung listed preorders in select markets from July 22 and general availability from August 7, 2026. Exact colors, LTE models, carriers, prices, and feature availability vary by country.
What Samsung actually announced
Samsung announced the Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 at Galaxy Unpacked in London on July 22, 2026. Preorders opened in select markets on the same day, with general availability listed for August 7, 2026. Samsung says that colors, sizes, LTE availability, carriers, pricing, and some features may vary by country.
The two watches are not simply different sizes of the same design. The Galaxy Watch9 is the lighter mainstream model for everyday health tracking, sleep, notifications, and workouts. The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the larger, tougher option for endurance training, outdoor sports, longer battery life, and diving-related features.

For most users, the Watch9 is the more sensible choice. The Ultra2 makes sense if you will genuinely use its 800mAh battery, titanium construction, trail tools, dual-frequency GPS, or diving functions. Its larger case and 61.5g weight are meaningful trade-offs for ordinary daily wear.

Galaxy Watch Ultra2: the substantial redesign
The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is a 47mm watch with a titanium case, sapphire-crystal display, and Samsung’s cushion-style construction, which integrates the display, bezel, and body. It is available in Titanium Silver and Titanium Gray.
Samsung says the redesigned Ultra2 is 12% thinner than the previous Ultra. At 10.7mm thick and 61.5g before accounting for the strap, it is still a large watch, but the thinner chassis should make it less imposing than its predecessor. The supplied band uses a lighter air-pocket structure designed to improve comfort, drainage, and ventilation during long wear.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Battery and charging
The 800mAh battery is the Ultra2’s most practical hardware advantage. Samsung describes it as a 35% capacity increase over the previous Ultra. Its U.S. product page quotes up to 60 hours with the always-on display enabled and says fast charging can reach 40% in 30 minutes.
Those are manufacturer estimates, not a guarantee of typical use. LTE, continuous GPS, frequent workouts, health monitoring, screen brightness, notifications, and ambient display behavior can all reduce endurance. The Ultra2 has a clear battery-capacity advantage over both Watch9 sizes, but the quoted 60-hour figure should not be treated as an across-the-board runtime for every mode.
Display, GPS, and storage
The 1.52-inch Super AMOLED display has a 498 × 498 resolution and a quoted peak brightness of up to 5,000 nits. That may help with readability outdoors, particularly during bright trail or water activities. The safe description is that Samsung rates it for up to 5,000 nits; it should not be described without attribution as the brightest smartwatch ever.

The Ultra2 includes L1 + L5 dual-frequency GPS, which is intended to improve positioning reliability in challenging environments compared with relying on a single frequency. It also has LTE, Bluetooth 6.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, 2GB of memory, and 64GB of storage. The processor is Qualcomm’s SDW6100 penta-core 3nm Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, shared with the Watch9.

Trail Run is exclusive to the Galaxy Watch Ultra2. It tracks elevation, climbing progress, cumulative ascent and descent, and the effect of terrain during a trail workout. Samsung says Trail Run requires an Android 13-or-newer phone, Samsung Health, and a Samsung account.
Nutrition Alert expands on the watch’s Sweat Loss feature. It uses estimated sweat loss relative to body weight to provide hydration guidance. That makes it potentially useful during longer sessions, but it remains an estimate rather than a laboratory measurement or individualized medical instruction.
Samsung lists 10ATM water resistance, IP69K/IPX8-related laboratory water protection, IP6X dust resistance, MIL-STD-810H testing, and EN13319 certification for diving instruments. The watch can automatically record depth, dive time, and water temperature. Samsung also announced a collaboration with Mares for more advanced diving functions, including ascent and descent rates and decompression-related safety information. The dedicated Ultra2 Diving app was described as expected later in 2026.
These capabilities do not turn the Ultra2 into a substitute for formal dive training, a professional dive computer, or other required diving equipment. EN13319 should be understood in the context Samsung provides: it is a certification associated with diving instruments, not a promise that the watch is appropriate for every type of technical or professional dive.

Galaxy Watch9: the everyday option
The Galaxy Watch9 comes in 40mm and 44mm versions. Both use aluminum cases and sapphire crystal. The 40mm model is available in Cream and Graphite, while the 44mm model comes in Graphite and Silver.
Choosing between the 40mm and 44mm Watch9
The 40mm model measures 42.7 × 40.4 × 8.6mm, weighs 31.5g, has a 1.34-inch 438 × 438 display, and uses a 390mAh battery. It is the better fit for users who prefer a lighter, less noticeable watch or have smaller wrists.

- International Model No Warranty in the US. ONLY compatible with Android devices. Samsung Pay - Not Supported. NOT compatible with iPhone or iOS devices.
The 44mm model measures 46.0 × 43.7 × 8.6mm and weighs 34.0g. Its 1.47-inch display has a 480 × 480 resolution, and its 445mAh battery is larger than the 40mm model’s cell. The extra screen area may make notifications, workout data, and on-watch controls easier to read, while the larger battery should provide more capacity. Samsung has not supplied an Ultra2-style headline endurance estimate in the confirmed specifications.
Both sizes have up to 3,000 nits of brightness, 2GB of memory, 32GB of storage, the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform, Wear OS 7, One UI 9 Watch, Bluetooth 6.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC, L1 + L5 dual-frequency GPS, and LTE versions. The Watch9 is therefore not a stripped-down health tracker; its principal compromises versus the Ultra2 are the case material, battery size, storage, ruggedization, and specialist outdoor and diving tools.
Durability limits
Samsung lists 5ATM-plus water resistance, IP68, and MIL-STD-810H protection for the Watch9. That is appropriate for a general-purpose fitness and health watch, but it should not be presented as equivalent to the Ultra2 for professional or technical diving. The Ultra2 is the model Samsung specifically positions around diving instruments and demanding outdoor use.
Shared health and software features
Both watches use Samsung’s BioActive sensor. It combines optical bio-signal sensing, electrical heart signals, and bioelectrical impedance analysis, along with temperature, accelerometer, barometer, gyroscope, geomagnetic, and light sensors.
Samsung’s updated health experience organizes information into activity, mindfulness, nutrition, sleep, and vitals. The company lists Sleep Apnea, Vitals, Heart Health Score, Daily Cardio Load, Fitness Index, and hearing-related alerts among the new or expanded capabilities. The exact availability of individual functions depends on the paired phone, country, regulatory approval, app versions, and account requirements.
Important setup requirements
- Vitals: requires at least seven nights of sleep data.
- Heart Health Score: requires a compatible upcoming Galaxy Watch running One UI 9, a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Health version 7.0 or later, a Samsung account, and an initial 24-hour setup period.
- Daily Cardio Load: requires at least seven days of activity records. Samsung recommends 28 days of continuous wear for optimal accuracy.
- Fitness Index: requires BIA and VO2 Max measurements, plus activity and step data.
- Bedtime Guidance: uses three days of sleep analysis to suggest a sleep window.
- Sleep Apnea: requires two nights of sleep data within a 10-day period and is limited by country and eligibility conditions.
- Energy Score: combines sleep and activity data and requires Samsung Health and a Samsung account.
These requirements matter because many watch features do not produce a meaningful result immediately after setup. A buyer expecting a complete training or sleep picture on the first day will need to wear the watch consistently while Samsung Health gathers a baseline.
Health features are not diagnoses
Sleep Apnea, Vitals, Heart Health Score, blood-pressure-related outputs, and other Samsung Health measurements should be treated as wellness or screening tools, not diagnoses or treatment. Sleep-apnea results are intended for personal reference and do not replace clinical testing. If a feature is available in your region, Samsung may also require additional setup or calibration; for example, blood-pressure monitoring can require calibration with a separately sold blood-pressure cuff. Confirm local requirements and speak with a qualified clinician about concerning readings.

Compatibility: check the phone before buying
Samsung’s specification table lists Android 13 or later and more than 1.5GB of phone memory as requirements. Activation requires a smartphone that supports Google Mobile Services. Some functions require more than those baseline specifications: a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Health, Samsung Health Monitor, a Samsung account, or a particular app version may be needed.
Do not assume that every Android phone receives the full Galaxy Watch experience. Sleep Apnea, Heart Health Score, blood-pressure-related functions, and other health tools may be restricted by country, phone model, regulatory approval, or Samsung Health Monitor availability. LTE service also depends on a compatible carrier and regional model. Check the exact watch SKU and your carrier before ordering, especially if standalone connectivity is important.
Software services and the Samsung Health ecosystem
Samsung announced a 60-day Strava trial with the new watches, with exclusions. It also announced a two-month iFIT subscription trial in 23 markets, including the United States. These are device promotions, not proof of a permanent subscription benefit or a referral program for this site. Trial eligibility, redemption rules, and market availability should be checked at purchase.

Bands, chargers, and fit considerations
Samsung promotes activity-specific Marine, Trail, and other band collections. A Galaxy Watch Ultra2 Trail Band may make sense for trail and endurance users, while a Marine-style band is aimed at water-focused use. Before buying a Galaxy Watch9 replacement band or a band advertised for the Ultra2, verify the exact model and physical compatibility. The two watch lines have different case designs and intended band categories; a band that fits one should not be assumed to fit the other.
A Samsung Galaxy Watch charger is another practical accessory to check before purchase, particularly if you are replacing an older charging puck or buying an LTE watch for travel. Confirm the charger’s compatibility with the exact watch generation and regional package contents rather than relying only on a generic product title.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which model should you buy?
Choose the Galaxy Watch9 if you want:
- A lighter everyday watch for sleep tracking, notifications, and general workouts.
- A smaller 40mm case or a moderate-size 44mm alternative.
- Samsung Health’s mainstream features without paying for outdoor and diving hardware you will not use.
- An aluminum case and 32GB of storage that are sufficient for ordinary smartwatch use.
- A watch that is less visually and physically imposing than the 47mm Ultra2.
When comparing listings for the everyday model, the Samsung Galaxy Watch9 is the broad product name; confirm whether the listing is for the 40mm or 44mm version, Bluetooth or LTE, and the correct regional model.

Choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 if you want:
- The largest battery capacity and Samsung’s quoted up-to-60-hour always-on-display estimate.
- A titanium case, sapphire crystal, higher durability ratings, and a larger 47mm design.
- Trail Run, cumulative ascent and descent tracking, and terrain-focused workout data.
- L1 + L5 dual-frequency GPS for outdoor activities.
- 64GB of storage instead of the Watch9’s 32GB.
- Diving-related depth, time, and water-temperature recording, with additional Mares-related functions expected later in 2026.
Readers shopping for the premium outdoor model can compare listings for the Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra2, but should confirm the 47mm case, LTE or Bluetooth configuration, included band, and local feature support. The Ultra2 is not automatically the better choice simply because it is more rugged; its size, weight, and likely higher cost are wasted if your use is mainly sleep tracking and notifications.
Bottom line
The Galaxy Watch9 is the default recommendation for most Samsung phone owners: it is lighter, available in two sizes, and includes the core health, sleep, fitness, GPS, and Wear OS features. Select the 44mm model if you prefer a larger display and battery, or the 40mm model if comfort and compactness matter most.
The Galaxy Watch Ultra2 is the specialist choice. Its 800mAh battery, titanium construction, 5,000-nit display rating, dual-frequency GPS, trail tools, 64GB storage, and diving-oriented hardware justify its size for endurance athletes, outdoor users, and divers who understand its limitations. It is overkill for a buyer who simply wants a lighter daily health watch.
Because the watches were announced for markets with different carrier, regulatory, and feature rules, verify compatibility and local availability before purchase. Treat Samsung Health measurements as useful personal data and screening information—not as a replacement for medical care or professional dive equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which is better: Galaxy Watch9 or Galaxy Watch Ultra2?
The Galaxy Watch9 is the better choice for most users who want sleep tracking, notifications, Samsung Health, and general workouts in a lighter 40mm or 44mm case. The Ultra2 is better for endurance training, outdoor sports, longer battery life, and diving-related tracking.
Can the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 replace a dive computer?
No. Samsung lists EN13319 certification for diving instruments and provides depth, dive-time, and water-temperature tracking, but the Ultra2 should not replace formal dive training, a professional dive computer, or required diving equipment.
What phones are compatible with Galaxy Watch9 and Ultra2?
Samsung lists Android 13 or later, more than 1.5GB of phone memory, and a smartphone supporting Google Mobile Services. Some features additionally require a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone, Samsung Health or Samsung Health Monitor, a Samsung account, and specific app versions.
How much heavier is the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 than the Watch9?
The 40mm Watch9 weighs 31.5g, the 44mm Watch9 weighs 34.0g, and the 47mm Ultra2 weighs 61.5g before the band. The Ultra2 is also thicker and uses a larger case, so it is substantially more noticeable during daily wear.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Buy the Galaxy Watch9 for lighter everyday health and fitness tracking; choose the Galaxy Watch Ultra2 only if its larger battery, titanium durability, trail tools, or diving-related functions are central to how you will use it.
