SE stands for “Special Edition” in both iPhone SE and Apple Watch SE. Apple did not spell out the letters in the original iPhone SE launch announcement, but Phil Schiller, then Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, confirmed the meaning in 2016 in a conversation reported by journalist Jason Cipriani.
“Special Edition” is the official explanation—not “Small Edition,” “Standard Edition,” “Second Edition,” or simply “budget.” Those descriptions may fit particular models, but they are not what the initials stand for.
What “SE” means on the iPhone
Apple announced the first iPhone SE on March 21, 2016. It combined the compact four-inch design associated with the iPhone 5s with newer hardware, including the A9 chip used in the iPhone 6s generation. It also included a 12-megapixel camera, Touch ID, Apple Pay support, and improved wireless capabilities.

That combination explains why “Special Edition” is a useful product name. The phone was not the next numbered flagship iPhone. Instead, it was a distinct edition that reused a familiar, smaller design while bringing selected newer technology to it.
Apple later reused the SE name rather than treating it as a one-off. The third-generation iPhone SE, announced on March 8, 2022, kept the familiar Home button and Touch ID design while adding an A15 Bionic chip and 5G. The exact hardware formula changed, but the basic idea remained: a separately positioned iPhone combining selected current features with a familiar design or feature set.
What “SE” means on the Apple Watch
Apple Watch SE uses the same “Special Edition” designation. Apple introduced the first Apple Watch SE on September 15, 2020, positioning it as a more affordable Apple Watch with essential features rather than as the full-featured model at the top of the range.
The first Apple Watch SE included features such as fall detection, fitness capabilities, Family Setup support, an always-on altimeter, and the S5 system in package. Apple described it as combining elements of the Apple Watch Series 6 design with a selected set of essential capabilities at a lower price.

Apple has not presented “SE” as a different technical acronym for the watch. In this context, it extends the same naming convention used by the iPhone: a special or selectively configured edition within an existing Apple product family.
Why Apple uses the SE label
Apple’s SE products sit outside the ordinary numbered progression. They are usually designed to make a familiar Apple product available in a different combination of size, design, performance, and price.

For that reason, it is more accurate to describe SE as a product designation for a special, selectively configured edition than to define it as “entry-level,” “small,” or “cheap.” Those may describe the market position of a particular generation, but they are not the expansion of the initials.
Does SE refer to the Macintosh SE?
There is also a historical Apple connection. The Macintosh SE was an Apple computer released in the late 1980s, and contemporary reporting about Schiller’s explanation said the iPhone name also evoked that earlier product.

The careful distinction is important: Apple’s support documentation confirms the Macintosh SE as a product name, but that documentation does not itself expand the letters. Therefore, it is reasonable to say that the iPhone SE name recalled the Macintosh SE while separately recognizing that Schiller publicly explained the iPhone initials as “Special Edition.” It would be too strong to claim that Apple’s technical documentation officially defines the original Macintosh acronym that way.

The meaning of the acronym is stable even though prices, software support, availability, and the current generation of each product can change. Those details should be checked separately when deciding whether a particular iPhone SE or Apple Watch SE is still a good purchase.
What this means when buying accessories
“SE” is not enough information to identify an accessory. iPhone SE models from different generations can have different dimensions, camera arrangements, and button or port details. Before buying a iPhone SE case, confirm whether it is made for the original 2016 model, the second-generation 2020 model, or the third-generation 2022 model. A listing that says only “iPhone SE” may not fit every generation.
The same principle applies to Apple Watch SE accessories. Apple said the first Apple Watch SE was compatible with Apple Watch bands, but band compatibility still depends on the watch’s case size and the specific band design. Check the millimeter size printed on the watch or its specifications before ordering an Apple Watch SE band.

In short, the name tells you how Apple positions the product; it does not replace checking the exact model and dimensions.
Bottom line
In both iPhone SE and Apple Watch SE, SE means “Special Edition.” Apple confirmed the iPhone meaning through Phil Schiller in 2016, and Apple carried the same label into the Watch lineup.
