Its biggest weakness was unreliable phone connectivity, especially in one contemporary review’s tests with non-Samsung Android phones; Tizen’s smaller app selection was another drawback. In 2026, it is a niche used buy for someone who wants basic watch functions and that distinctive design—not a sensible default for a modern smartwatch.
What the Gear S2 gets right
The Gear S2’s defining strength is the experience of using it, not a spec-sheet advantage. A compact round display, physical controls and a clear interface made it feel thoughtfully designed for a wrist. Samsung’s launch announcement described the family’s design and features, including its circular display and rotating bezel: Samsung’s Gear S2 launch announcement.
Rotating bezel: the best reason to remember it
Turning the bezel moved through lists, menus and notifications without requiring repeated swipes across the display. That gave navigation a precise, tactile feel and kept a finger from obscuring the screen. The bezel was not just decoration: paired with the touchscreen and two side buttons, it made a small watch easier to operate at a glance. It became the Gear S2’s signature feature and one of the most effective control ideas of its era.
Display, design and comfort
The Bluetooth Gear S2 has a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED display at 360 × 360 resolution, or 302 pixels per inch. AMOLED’s deep blacks and contrast suit a watch face well, and the resolution looks sharp at this size. The trade-off is physical: text and controls remain cramped compared with larger modern watches.
#1 Best Overall
- With elegant curves and premium finishes, function meets style in the Gear S2. Personalize it with custom watch faces to create a smartwatch that is uniquely your own.
- Get notifications from your phone right on your wrist with a glance. With the Gear S2, you can receive calendar notifications, texts and even news updates.
- With built-in wireless charging, it's easy to keep the Gear S2 powered up. Whether you're at home, work or anywhere in between, you can power up by simply setting your Gear S2 on the included wireless charging dock.
- We've partnered with many of the apps you love, so now you can get to them without having to reach for your phone.
The standard Bluetooth model measures 42.3 × 49.8 × 11.4mm and weighs 47g; the Gear S2 Classic Bluetooth is smaller at 39.9 × 43.6 × 11.4mm and 42g. The standard version has sportier styling and an elastomer band, while the Classic uses a more traditional look and leather strap. Samsung’s product pages list the detailed specifications for the Gear S2 Bluetooth and Gear S2 Classic Bluetooth.
- The standard model’s proprietary-style band attachment can make replacements less straightforward than ordinary watch straps. Check exact model compatibility before buying a replacement.
- The Classic’s leather strap can show age or wear on a used watch; inspect it rather than judging only the case.
- Turn the bezel through its full range on a used unit. Looseness, grinding or missed inputs can undermine the feature that makes the watch distinctive.
The big problem: phone connections could be unreliable
A 2016 review reported repeated phone disconnections on two Gear S2 review units, particularly with non-Galaxy phones. In one case, the watch reportedly would not reconnect without a factory reset; the other eventually recovered. That is a specific historical review finding, not evidence that every unit failed. The reviewer also said Samsung was aware of the issue at the time, but the available documentation does not establish a fix that resolved it across devices. Read the contemporary review.
When a watch loses its companion connection, notifications may be missed or delayed, and restoring normal use can mean repeated pairing attempts or, in the reported case, a reset. Bluetooth behavior can depend on the phone model, operating-system version, companion software, firmware and surrounding wireless conditions. For a used Gear S2, a successful pairing at handover is not enough: test it over several hours, including screen-off time and notification delivery.
Tizen works well for basics, but its app selection is limited
The Gear S2 ran Samsung’s Tizen-based wearable software. Its core functions included watch faces, notifications, messages, email, fitness features, music, weather, navigation and S Voice; Samsung’s launch material lists these capabilities. A feature list, however, does not mean the watch has a broad choice of third-party apps.

The interface works best when apps are designed around the bezel and small round display. For time, alarms, basic activity tracking and notifications, the built-in experience can be enough. Someone who relies on a particular Google, fitness, messaging, music or productivity app should verify that it is actually available and works with this legacy device. Do not buy a Gear S2 expecting today’s Wear OS app catalog.
Gear S2, Classic and 3G/4G: what differs
“Gear S2” refers to a family, not one identical watch. The 3G/4G model has different hardware and carrier dependencies; it is not simply a Bluetooth model with a SIM added. The dimensions and battery figures below are Samsung’s launch-era specifications.
| Model | Main distinction | Battery capacity | Important caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear S2 Bluetooth | Sportier design; 42.3 × 49.8 × 11.4mm; 47g | 250mAh | No built-in GPS; proprietary-style band attachment |
| Gear S2 Classic Bluetooth | More traditional styling; 39.9 × 43.6 × 11.4mm; 42g | 250mAh | Same legacy software and age-related battery concerns |
| Gear S2 3G/4G | Cellular connectivity, speaker and voice features; model and carrier dependent | 300mAh | Check radio support, carrier activation, lock status and service provisioning before buying |
The Gear S2 is not the Samsung Gear 2: that earlier smartwatch has a rectangular design.
Battery, charging and fitness features
Samsung rated the Bluetooth Gear S2 and Classic for roughly two to three days of typical use; the 3G version’s original rating was about two days. Those are manufacturer estimates for new devices, not a promise for a used watch. A secondary historical summary reports roughly 36–48 hours in independent review use, but individual results depend on settings and use: Frontum’s Gear S2 summary.

The Bluetooth models have 250mAh batteries; the cellular model has a 300mAh battery. The Bluetooth Gear S2 shipped with a wireless charging dock, and Samsung specifies that dock on its product page. For a secondhand watch, ask the seller to demonstrate its runtime away from the charger and confirm the correct dock is included. Samsung’s specifications describe the battery as non-removable; a unit that drains within hours may need specialist repair, which can be uneconomical and can compromise water resistance if opened improperly.
Samsung lists an accelerometer, gyroscope, heart-rate sensor, ambient-light sensor and barometer, along with S Health and Nike+ Running support. The Bluetooth Gear S2 specification does not list built-in GPS, so route tracking generally depends on the phone. Its sensors are useful for basic historical activity tracking, not medical-grade measurement or a substitute for a modern standalone running watch with advanced training and health features.
Compatibility: Android and iPhone support are not the same as a good pairing experience
At launch, the Gear S2 was primarily an Android accessory. Samsung announced iOS compatibility on January 7, 2017, so the old blanket claim that it never works with iPhone is outdated. Samsung’s current compatibility page lists Android 4.4 or later with at least 1.5GB RAM, and iPhone 5 or later running iOS 9 or above. It also warns that features may be limited and compatibility varies by device, brand and region; some iPhone 6S/6S Plus combinations may be unstable. See Samsung’s iOS compatibility announcement and current compatibility guidance.
Those listed minimum versions are historical compatibility criteria, not proof of reliable operation with every phone sold in 2026. The iPhone experience should not be assumed to match Samsung-phone functionality, and a modern Android phone may also behave differently from the devices covered by the original specifications. Confirm that the required Gear wearable app is available for your phone and test the specific watch-phone combination before relying on it.

- For Android 4.4 and Later, Water and Dust-Resistant
Water resistance, NFC and cellular service: verify before relying on them
IP68 is not a guarantee for an aging watch
Samsung rates the Gear S2 IP68 for dust and water resistance, but that does not make it waterproof. Samsung separately warns that water or dust can still enter and damage the watch. The rating is not a promise that a decade-old unit with aged seals is safe for swimming, hot showers or salt water. See Samsung’s water- and dust-resistance guidance.
NFC does not guarantee that payments still work
The watch has NFC, and Samsung promoted mobile payments as a launch feature. Hardware presence alone cannot establish that a payment service, account, app or regional certification still works in 2026. Verify current support for the exact model and country before treating payments as a reason to buy.
Do not assume a 3G/4G model can still go cellular
The cellular Gear S2’s launch availability and pricing varied by carrier. Before buying for phone-independent calls or data, confirm that the specific radio is still supported in your country, the carrier will activate that model, it is not locked elsewhere, and its service provisioning works. Samsung’s carrier launch announcement documents its original carrier-dependent availability, not present-day service.
Should you buy a Gear S2 in 2026?
It can make sense as a very inexpensive legacy watch if the rotating bezel and design are the point, the phone pairing has been tested, and you only need basic functions. It is a poor choice when dependable modern smartwatch integration matters. There is no reliable current used-price range established here, so compare the actual asking price with newer entry-level watches rather than treating the 2015 launch price as a guide. A contemporary review cited launch-era U.S. prices of about $299 for Gear S2, $349 for Classic and $359.99 starting for 3G models; those are historical prices, not current values.
Buy only if these checks pass
- You want the bezel, classic circular look or a basic notification watch more than a modern app platform.
- The exact model pairs with your phone and delivers notifications reliably in a hands-on test.
- The seller demonstrates useful battery runtime, and the correct charging dock is included.
- The bezel, screen and buttons work correctly, and you accept limited app availability and aging hardware.
Skip it if you need modern smartwatch capabilities
- Current Wear OS apps, advanced health features or dependable standalone GPS.
- Reliable LTE service without first confirming carrier and model support.
- A watch for swimming, serious training or a long-term support path.
- A price close to a newer entry-level smartwatch, or a unit with rapid drain, random disconnections, no dock or an unverified reset and pairing state.
How to troubleshoot a pairing failure
The sequence below is a practical troubleshooting attempt, not a guaranteed repair. App names and menu labels can vary with phone and software version.
- Charge both the Gear S2 and phone.
- Update the phone and install the Samsung wearable application required for the Gear S2.
- Remove the watch from the phone’s Bluetooth device list.
- Restart both devices.
- Open the wearable app and pair from within it, rather than pairing only through system Bluetooth settings.
- If pairing still fails, back up anything possible and factory-reset the watch.
- After pairing, test notification delivery and connection stability for several hours, including periods when the watch screen is off.
Samsung’s compatibility guidance warns that features and support vary by device and region, so a reset cannot guarantee a stable connection on every phone.
