Samsung Smart Monitor M8 M80D: What 360 Audio and Galaxy Watch Integration Actually Do

The Samsung Smart Monitor M8 M80D adds earbud-based 360 Audio and Galaxy Watch workout tracking, but its 60 Hz panel and ecosystem requirements limit its appeal.

Samsung’s 2024 Smart Monitor M8, known as the M80D, added two headline ecosystem features: 360 Audio through compatible Galaxy Buds and Workout Tracker support that displays Galaxy Watch health data on the screen. The important catch is that neither feature turns the monitor’s built-in speakers into a surround-sound system or turns a Galaxy Watch into a fully mirrored display.

Introduced in January 2024 as an update to the M80C, the M80D remains a 32-inch 4K smart monitor built around Samsung’s Tizen platform. As of September 2026, it should be viewed as a dated 2024 model rather than a newly launched monitor.

What changed on the 2024 M8?

The M80D is an incremental update, not a fundamentally redesigned monitor. Samsung retained the familiar 32-inch 4K format and added software and ecosystem features aimed at entertainment, fitness, and hybrid work.

  • 360 Audio: spatialized listening through compatible Galaxy Buds, with head tracking in supported content and applications.
  • Workout Tracker: real-time health information from a compatible Galaxy Watch while workout or streaming content remains on screen.
  • AI upscaling: Samsung says the monitor can improve lower-resolution content.
  • Active Voice Amplifier Pro: background-noise analysis intended to make dialogue easier to hear.

The M80D also continues to include Samsung’s SlimFit Camera, DeX support, streaming apps, Gaming Hub, SmartThings integration, and a TV-style smart interface. Samsung’s launch announcement describes the 2024 additions and positioning in more detail at Samsung Newsroom.

Is the M80D’s 360 Audio really spatial audio?

Yes—but only in the earbud-based sense. Samsung calls the feature 360 Audio. It is delivered through supported Galaxy Buds rather than through the monitor’s 10-watt built-in speakers.

With compatible content and applications, the effect can create a more immersive sound field. Head tracking can make the perceived audio respond as you move your head, helping the sound feel anchored to the screen. However, the M80D does not contain a multichannel speaker array, and Samsung does not turn its built-in speakers into a room-filling Dolby Atmos system.

The practical summary is simple: the M80D adds spatial-style listening for Galaxy Buds users, not built-in surround sound. Samsung also warns that compatibility and head-tracking behavior can vary by application, content, device, and software version.

Compatible Galaxy Buds

On its Canadian product page, Samsung lists these supported models:

  • Galaxy Buds2 Pro
  • Galaxy Buds2
  • Galaxy Buds Pro
  • Galaxy Buds Live

This should not be treated as a permanently exhaustive list. Samsung says supported devices can change without notice. Check the compatibility information for your exact monitor region and firmware on Samsung’s M80D product page.

If 360 Audio does not work

  1. Update the monitor and Galaxy Buds software.
  2. Pair the Buds through the monitor’s Bluetooth settings.
  3. Confirm that the Buds model appears on Samsung’s supported list.
  4. Test more than one video, music, or game application.
  5. Disable and re-enable 360 Audio if the current software exposes that control.

If the effect works in one application but not another, the problem may be content or app compatibility rather than defective hardware. Samsung’s public documentation does not establish one permanent menu path for every firmware version, so the exact settings labels may differ.

How Galaxy Watch Workout Tracker works

Workout Tracker is a fitness overlay, not general Galaxy Watch mirroring. It places real-time health information on the monitor while workout video or other streaming content stays visible.

Samsung specifies the following requirements:

  • A Galaxy Watch4 or later.
  • A compatible Galaxy mobile device running One UI 4.1.1 or later.
  • The latest available software on the relevant devices.
  • The watch and mobile device signed into the same Samsung account.
  • The watch and phone located near the monitor.

That means the feature is not designed to work with any Bluetooth smartwatch, and it is not independent of a Galaxy phone. Samsung also notes that regional availability and device support can vary.

If watch data fails to appear, check the watch generation, phone software, Samsung account, proximity, network connection, and Samsung Health-related setup or permissions. Owners of older Galaxy Watches, iPhone users, and people seeking a full smartwatch screen projection should not buy the M80D specifically for this feature.

What the M80D can replace

The monitor combines several devices and services in one display:

  • A 4K desktop monitor.
  • A small smart TV with streaming apps and Samsung TV Plus.
  • Basic built-in speakers.
  • A webcam for Samsung’s Smart Monitor and DeX workflows.
  • A USB-C laptop connection with up to 65 W charging.
  • Samsung DeX support for compatible Galaxy phones and tablets.
  • Cloud gaming access through Gaming Hub.
  • Basic connected-home control through SmartThings.

That makes it practical for a bedroom, dorm, studio, or compact home office where one screen must serve work and entertainment. It offers a smart-TV-like experience, but it should not be assumed to include every tuner, broadcast feature, or service found on a conventional television.

DeX and camera limitations

Samsung documents SlimFit Camera compatibility with DeX for specific hardware, including a USB-C connection, Galaxy S23 or later, Galaxy Z Fold5, and listed Galaxy Tab S9-series devices running the applicable One UI 6.1.1-or-later software.

Do not assume the camera is automatically a universal USB webcam for every computer through every connection method. Samsung’s headline use case is its Smart Monitor and DeX integration; general PC webcam behavior depends on the computer, connection, and software.

USB-C is convenient, but not universal

USB-C can carry video and charge a compatible laptop with one cable, but the laptop must support video output over USB-C. Up to 65 W may also be insufficient for some high-performance laptops under sustained load. Cable, computer, firmware, and regional model differences can affect behavior.

Real-world strengths

Independent testing by RTINGS gives the M80D a stronger office and general-use profile than its Gaming Hub branding might suggest.

  • Sharp productivity image: 4K resolution produces crisp text on a 32-inch screen.
  • Good native contrast: the VA panel can provide convincing blacks in ordinary viewing.
  • Useful all-in-one design: streaming, speakers, camera, and monitor functions are consolidated.
  • Flexible placement: it can operate as a smart display without a computer.
  • Samsung ecosystem value: Buds, Galaxy Watch, DeX, SmartThings, and Samsung account integration can reduce friction for existing users.

Real-world weaknesses

The smart features do not make the M80D a high-end monitor.

  • 60 Hz ceiling: it cannot provide the smoothness of a 120 Hz or higher display.
  • Motion blur: RTINGS found fast-moving objects noticeably blurry.
  • Limited HDR impact: there is no local dimming, and HDR highlights do not become especially bright.
  • Viewing-angle limitations: the VA panel changes more noticeably off-axis than some competing panel types.
  • Limited adjustability: the tested configuration does not offer swivel adjustment.
  • Ecosystem dependence: the most distinctive features require Samsung devices and accounts.

Samsung’s 4 ms GtG figure is a rated specification, not proof that the monitor delivers excellent measured motion performance.

Is it good for gaming?

Only for the right kind of gaming. Gaming Hub provides access to cloud gaming, but it does not change the panel’s 60 Hz limit. Cloud services may require separate subscriptions, controllers may be required, and availability varies by country. Samsung’s Gaming Hub information explains those service caveats.

The M80D is reasonable for casual, turn-based, and slower games. It is a poor choice for competitive shooters and other fast-paced games where refresh rate and motion clarity matter. If smart features are unimportant, a conventional high-refresh-rate monitor is likely better value.

Who should buy the M80D?

  • Samsung ecosystem households: especially users who already own compatible Galaxy Buds and a Galaxy Watch4 or newer.
  • Small-space users: people replacing both a desktop monitor and a bedroom or dorm TV.
  • Hybrid workers: buyers who want 4K text, USB-C laptop connectivity, streaming, speakers, and an integrated camera.
  • DeX users: owners of compatible Galaxy phones or tablets who want a larger, more self-contained workspace.

Who should skip it?

  • Competitive gamers who need 120 Hz or higher.
  • Professional HDR users who need local dimming and brighter highlights.
  • Buyers prioritizing the best picture quality per dollar over smart features.
  • People who need Thunderbolt connectivity.
  • Users who do not own Samsung devices and have no interest in Tizen, DeX, SmartThings, or Galaxy integration.
  • Anyone expecting the built-in speakers to provide true spatial surround sound.

Price and availability

The M80D launched in 2024, not 2026. Samsung’s U.S. business page displayed $699.99 when checked, but that is a regional business-listing price rather than a guaranteed current consumer street price. Samsung’s Canadian consumer page rendered the product as unavailable or not for sale when checked. Actual availability, discounts, and model suffixes vary by country and date.

Because newer Samsung monitor models exist, the M80D makes the most sense when its all-in-one design and ecosystem features are available at a compelling discount. At full price, compare it with a newer 4K monitor plus a separate streaming device—or with a higher-refresh conventional monitor if gaming is the priority.

The verdict

The M80D’s two headline additions are useful, but narrowly targeted. 360 Audio is an earbud-based spatial listening feature for selected Galaxy Buds, while Workout Tracker is a fitness-data overlay requiring a Galaxy Watch4-or-newer device, a compatible Galaxy phone, current software, the same Samsung account, and nearby devices.

For a Samsung household that wants one 32-inch display for work, streaming, DeX, occasional gaming, and workouts, the M80D can still be a practical all-in-one screen. For competitive gaming, serious HDR viewing, or buyers outside Samsung’s ecosystem, its 60 Hz panel and software premium make it a much weaker proposition.
