Samsung’s investigation into a Galaxy Ring that reportedly swelled and became stuck on its owner’s finger was completed in January 2026. According to reporting that reproduced Samsung’s statement, Samsung and an independent external agency attributed the damage to a crack in the ring’s internal molding and said they found no broader Galaxy Ring battery-safety risk. They did not determine what caused that crack.
What happened?
In September 2025, a Galaxy Ring wearer reported that the ring appeared to separate or swell while it was on his finger. The ring reportedly became difficult or impossible to remove, and the wearer sought hospital assistance. Images of the damaged ring circulated online, prompting concern because the device contains a lithium-ion battery and is worn tightly against the skin.

The wearer also described travel disruption connected with the incident. Samsung contacted him, collected the ring, and initially characterized the case as “extremely rare.”
Samsung later completed its examination. Android Authority reported that Samsung and an independent external agency concluded the damage resulted from a crack in the ring’s internal molding. SamMobile reported that Samsung said it found no wider Galaxy Ring battery-safety risk.

What Samsung’s finding does—and does not—mean
The public appearance was widely described as battery swelling, but the reported technical conclusion was more specific: a crack in the internal molding caused the swelling-like separation in the examined ring.
That does not establish whether the battery cell itself experienced classic gas-generating swelling, whether a molding failure created the appearance of swelling, or whether the two conditions interacted. The available reporting also says Samsung could not determine what caused the molding crack.
Accordingly, the investigation should not be summarized as either “Samsung proved the ring is safe” or “the Galaxy Ring has a confirmed battery defect.” Samsung’s statement concerns the examined unit and reportedly found no broader risk; it does not reveal a root cause for the molding crack or prove that every battery complaint has the same explanation.

Was the Galaxy Ring recalled?
The evidence reviewed for this article does not establish a broad Galaxy Ring recall. Samsung’s reported conclusion was that it found no wider product battery-safety risk.

An individual replacement, refund, credit, goodwill accommodation, or case-by-case service decision is not the same as a formal recall. Recall status can vary by country, so owners should check their national product-safety authority and Samsung’s local support channels for the latest notices.
Is this a widespread battery problem?
There is no verified failure-rate study in the available evidence showing that Galaxy Rings are broadly swelling or separating. Online reports describe rapid battery degradation, short runtime, replacement disputes, and alleged repeat failures, but those accounts are anecdotal. They should not be treated as proof of a common swelling defect or connected automatically to the investigated ring.
Battery-life decline and physical swelling are different symptoms. A ring that holds less charge may need service, but reduced runtime alone does not demonstrate imminent swelling or a thermal event.

A damaged lithium-ion battery can become unsafe, and Samsung’s general battery-safety guidance says not to use visibly swollen, damaged, leaking, smoking, unusually hot, or otherwise compromised batteries. Samsung’s guidance is written primarily for Galaxy handsets rather than specifically for the Galaxy Ring, but the handling principles are relevant.

A ring presents an additional practical problem: it is constrained by the wearer’s finger. If its internal dimensions change, removal can become difficult. Forceful attempts to squeeze, pry, cut, bend, or dismantle it could worsen the damage or injure the finger.
What to do if your Galaxy Ring looks swollen or begins separating
- Stop wearing it if it can be removed without force.
- Do not charge it.
- Do not squeeze, puncture, pry open, cut, bend, or repair it yourself.
- Keep it away from heat and flammable materials.
- Contact Samsung support or an authorized service location for handling, repair, replacement, or disposal instructions.
- If it is stuck, or the finger is painful, numb, discolored, increasingly swollen, or showing signs of reduced circulation, seek urgent medical assistance. Do not wait for ordinary customer support or try to dismantle the ring yourself.
- Do not ship or dispose of a visibly damaged battery until Samsung, an authorized service provider, or the relevant carrier gives you instructions.
Samsung’s support guidance says to stop charging a swollen battery and contact a service center. Its U.S. terms also advise against self-repair of damaged or swollen batteries and direct customers to authorized Samsung locations.

For a ring with battery or performance complaints but no visible physical damage, record the runtime, firmware and app versions, charging behavior, ring size, purchase date, serial number, and any unusual heat or separation. Keep photographs and proof of purchase.
Ask Samsung to specify in writing whether any proposed resolution is a repair, replacement, refurbished unit, refund, or credit, and what warranty period applies afterward. Outcomes may depend on country, retailer, purchase date, warranty status, and Samsung’s inspection. Do not assume an out-of-warranty ring will receive a free replacement.

Water resistance does not make a physically damaged ring safe to wear or charge.
What prospective buyers should consider
The reported investigation result reduces—but does not eliminate—the relevance of the incident. The Galaxy Ring is a small, sealed wearable; owners should not expect a user-replaceable battery. A buyer should weigh Samsung’s support process, warranty terms, sizing requirements, and the consequences of a hardware failure in a device worn on a finger.
Use Samsung’s sizing kit rather than assuming ordinary ring sizing will transfer directly. Samsung’s U.S. product pages have displayed a list price of $399.99 and a two-year Samsung Care+ option at $49, but prices, coverage, exclusions, availability, and warranty terms are market- and date-sensitive. Neither Care+ nor a standard warranty should be assumed to cover every swelling or physical-damage claim without checking the current contract.
