The bezel, case, internal cushioning and the way the sapphire is shaped and mounted all contribute to protection. Casio’s MRG-D5000 is a rare example built with a sapphire outer case; on other models, “sapphire” may refer only to the watch glass.
What makes a G-SHOCK shock resistant?
Shock resistance is a whole-watch design, not a quality that comes from the crystal alone. Casio describes a protruding bezel that encloses the watch and guards the crystal, a hollow case structure that lets the module move within the case, and cushioning around key module components. Casio summarizes the bezel’s role this way: “The bezel also guards the surface of the crystal.” Casio’s explanation of G-SHOCK shock resistance describes the design, but it does not promise survival under every kind of impact.

That distinction matters for sapphire. Its presence does not tell you by itself how a particular watch will fare when struck or dropped. The surrounding structure and the way the sapphire is integrated also matter.

It can mean either, so check the model’s specifications. “Sapphire crystal” usually identifies the watch glass; it does not mean the outer case is made of sapphire. For example, Casio lists sapphire glass with an anti-reflective coating on the MRG-G1000B-1A, while describing its case as titanium and its construction as shock resistant. - Reach new heights and break new barriers with a GRAVITYMASTER inspired by the exhilarating speed of supersonic jets. From the G-SHOCK MASTER OF G line of timepieces that deliver peak performance for professionals facing punishing conditions on land, in the sea, or in the sky — this timepiece combines durability and functionality to meet the demands of rigorous aerial missions.
- Employing a dual hollow case structure, the advanced TOUGH MVT.2 movement, and outstanding readability, the GWR-B3000 ensures the precision timekeeping required for professional missions flown from the most demanding cockpit situations.
- Topology analysis of spatial relationships is used to optimize the exceptionally rugged GRAVITYMASTER design for Triple G Resist. The Triple G Resist structure enhances the watch’s ability to withstand shock, centrifugal force, and vibration, with these previously independent functions now working interdependently within a dual hollow structure.
- The dual hollow structure features an outer case enveloping the center case and supporting it at separate four points, making the center case appear to float. The outer case is constructed of multiple components finished with metal injection molding (MIM), incorporating resin buffering components, as well. The shock absorbers that protect the center case are left visible, creating a design of complex and intricate structural beauty.
- Developed in pursuit of ultimate precision, reliability, and practicality, the Tough Movement solar-powered analog movement has now evolved to become the TOUGH MVT.2, featuring advanced self-regulating control that withstands external disturbances.
The MRG-D5000 Blue Sapphire is different: Casio presents sapphire as part of the outer case construction, not just the glass. That makes it a useful example of sapphire case engineering, but it does not establish that every watch with sapphire glass has the same construction or impact performance.
How does Casio engineer the MRG-D5000’s sapphire case?
Casio says the MRG-D5000 uses a Multi-Guard Structure for Sapphire, with separate interacting components intended to disperse impact energy. Rather than relying on a single case piece, the design divides the outer case into multiple components. Casio says it shaped the small sapphire pieces to resist chipping and removed details such as screw holes that could contribute to cracking.

In its 2026 engineering story, Casio says repeated experimentation led its engineers to find that dividing the outer case into multiple interacting components “substantially improves impact resistance.” This is Casio’s account of the design and its intent, not an independent comparative test result. Can sapphire still chip or crack?
Yes. Casio itself notes the difficulty of processing small sapphire components and the need to address chipping and cracking in the design. Sapphire should not be treated as indestructible, and a shock-resistant watch is not a guarantee against damage from every strike or fall.
Casio’s official material does not publish a universal impact force, drop height or breakage rate for sapphire watch crystals. It also does not provide a controlled head-to-head durability comparison between the MRG-D5000 and a G-SHOCK with sapphire glass. There is therefore no supported number for how hard a hit a sapphire G-SHOCK will survive.
