These are reference-specific differences, not universal rules for every watch in either family.
How the two GMTs differ in character
Presage Cocktail Time: a dial-led, dressier look
Seiko places Cocktail Time in its Presage collection, emphasizing vibrant, glossy dials, slim shining markers and a box-shaped Hardlex crystal. The HCB006’s radial purple dial takes inspiration from “Edo Murasaki,” a cocktail created in collaboration with Hisashi Kishi of STAR BAR in Tokyo’s Ginza district. Seiko identifies Kishi as a past International Bar Association World Championships winner. Seiko’s HCB006 product page describes gold coloring on the logo and GMT hand as an elegant accent.

Seiko 5 Sports: a sportier, more instrument-like presentation
Seiko describes the original Seiko 5 Sports GMT as a design for international travelers, based on its SKX series. Its two-color rotating bezel marks day and night hours, and the GMT hand is highlighted for legibility. That makes the SSK001 the clearer pick if you want a sports-watch appearance and an additional bezel-based way to read another time zone. Those travel-oriented claims are Seiko’s description, not independent testing. Seiko’s June 8, 2022 launch announcement explains the SKX design inspiration.

HCB006 vs. SSK001: published specifications
The following comparison is between the specific HCB006 and SSK001 references. Specifications can differ across both collections.

Seiko lists these specifications on its US HCB006 page and Middle East SSK001 page. The pages are for different regional markets; confirm the specifications and availability for the reference sold where you live.
What their shared GMT movement means
Both examples use Seiko’s 4R34 automatic movement with manual winding and a 24-hour hand. Their collection names do not indicate different GMT mechanics. The SSK001’s rotating 24-hour bezel adds an external reading aid; the HCB006 page lists an independent 24-hour hand adjustment function but does not list a rotating 24-hour bezel.

For setting and operating the GMT hand and dual-time display, follow Seiko’s 4R34 instruction manual. The manual is the appropriate source for the movement’s operating procedure; do not assume the bezel changes how the movement itself works.

Case size and wrist fit depend on the reference
On the documented figures, the HCB006 is 2 mm narrower and 0.8 mm thinner than the SSK001. Seiko gives the HCB006 a 47.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement, but the cited SSK001 specifications do not state its lug-to-lug length. Diameter alone cannot settle which will fit better, so compare the exact references and try them on if possible.

“Seiko 5 Sports GMT” does not always mean the 42.5 mm SKX-style SSK001. For example, Seiko lists the SSK025 Field GMT at 39.4 mm in diameter and 47.9 mm lug-to-lug, with a leather band; the SSK023 is a similar-sized bracelet option. Water resistance: use the exact watch’s rating
The listed ratings are 5 bar for HCB006 and 10 bar for SSK001. The SSK001 therefore has the higher published rating, but that specification alone is not a claim of suitability for every water activity. Check Seiko’s instructions and the rating for the exact reference before using a watch around water.

Prices and availability are market- and date-specific
Seiko’s August 6, 2026 announcement gives the HCB006 a US recommended retail price of $625 and identifies it as a 6,000-piece limited edition. The announcement lists an October 2026 release, so as of October 12, 2026, that is a scheduled release rather than confirmation of broad availability. Verify local availability and pricing. Seiko’s announcement is the source for those details.

The $495 US figure for the first Seiko 5 Sports GMT was its original launch retail price in 2022, not a current quote for the SSK001 or later references. Prices and availability vary by market; check local retailers for current offers. Seiko’s 2022 launch announcement records that historical price.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose the HCB006 Cocktail Time GMT for its glossy, cocktail-inspired purple dial, dressier presentation and more compact published dimensions than the SSK001.
- Choose the SSK001 Seiko 5 Sports GMT if you want the SKX-derived sports look, a rotating 24-hour bezel and its 10-bar rating.
- Choose by fit only after checking the exact reference. Compare lug-to-lug measurements where available and try the watch on; the published figures do not support a direct HCB006-to-SSK001 lug-to-lug comparison.
- Choose by price only after checking your local market. The published US figures refer to different dates and are not directly comparable as current prices.
