Seiko modding is the hands-on customisation of a watch, often by changing its appearance or replacing components. It is easy to see why the practice attracts watch hobbyists: a build can be tailored around a familiar base model, with choices ranging from a new bezel or strap to a different movement. But available evidence does not measure how many people mod watches or how quickly the hobby is growing. Seiko has reported a qualitative increase in online sales listings for MOD watches—not a count of hobbyists.
What is a Seiko mod?
A Seiko mod is a watch customised with replacement or altered parts. Some builds start with a Seiko model; others use aftermarket components styled around familiar Seiko designs. Changes can be mainly cosmetic, such as a new bezel insert, dial, hands or strap, or can involve functional components such as the crystal or movement.
There is no single recipe for a “Seiko mod.” The parts, work and compatibility checks depend on the exact base watch and the components selected. A guide to the SKX007, for example, discusses its case, case back, movement, dial, crown, hands, chapter ring, crystal, bezel, click spring, spring bars and strap or bracelet. Those model-specific instructions should not be treated as a universal parts list for Seiko watches.
Is Seiko modding actually on the rise?
Seiko Watch Corporation said in a notice dated 6 October 2025 that it had seen an “increasing number” of so-called MOD watches being sold online. That is evidence of the company’s observation about online listings, not a quantified measure of hobbyist participation, market size or growth rate. The notice does not establish why individual owners choose to customise watches.

The most grounded explanation for the hobby’s appeal is practical: modding offers a way to make component-level choices and learn watch assembly around a recognisable base. That describes what the activity enables; it should not be mistaken for a measured account of hobbyists’ motivations.
What can you change on an SKX007?
The SKX007 is one specific example, not a template for every Seiko. A supplier-authored guide details its components and discusses replacing the bezel or insert, crystal, hands and movement. Before buying parts, check their dimensions and compatibility against the exact model and configuration.

Movement choices
The guide identifies the SKX007’s standard movement as the Seiko 7S26 and names the NH35 (date only) and NH36 (day-date) as popular upgrade options. A movement choice affects more than the label on the part: the guide notes that crown position and day-wheel alignment can matter in an SKX007 build. Do not assume an NH35 or NH36—or any other movement—fits a different Seiko case without checking the relevant specifications.

- Dimensions and fit: Confirm that the crystal, bezel, insert, dial and hands are suitable for the exact model.
- Dial and markings: Check whether the dial is sterile or carries a brand mark. An aftermarket dial bearing a Seiko mark should not be assumed to be an authorised Seiko component.
- Movement configuration: Match date-only or day-date requirements and check alignment and fit.
- Provenance: Consider the seller and the origin and condition of both the base watch and replacement parts.
- Service implications: Seiko’s stated position on modified watches may affect warranty and service expectations.
What tools and skills does a beginner need?
The SKX007 guide describes a basic watchmaking tool set as a reasonable starting point and covers procedures such as opening a case, fitting a stem, and replacing a bezel or crystal. It also discusses specialised tools including a case knife, crystal press, pin vise or tweezers, file and calipers. The work calls for care: a tool that is unsuitable for a particular operation can damage the case or component.
If you plan to do hands-on work, a basic watchmaking tool kit is a category to research—not a guarantee that one generic kit contains everything needed for a particular build. Check the tools against the steps and parts involved, and consider having delicate or unfamiliar work done by a watchmaker.

What does Seiko say about modified watches?
Seiko Watch Corporation’s notice of 6 October 2025 says: “We do not endorse or authorize any modification of our products.” The company also says counterfeit and MOD watches are not covered by its warranty or quality assurance, and warns that such products may not be subject to material or workmanship safety regulation. These are Seiko’s stated positions and warnings; they are not an independent finding about every third-party part or individual build.
Seiko Thailand’s FAQ gives a local position: it says externally modified or reassembled watches are not genuine Seiko products, discusses use of the SEIKO mark on aftermarket parts, and says external modifications affect warranty and after-sales-service eligibility. That FAQ applies to Seiko Thailand’s stated policy and is not a complete global legal analysis.

For watches bought in the United States, Seiko’s internet purchase warning recommends buying from authorised retailers and cautions that unauthorised sites may sell counterfeit, second-hand or tampered-with watches that are not eligible for Seiko warranty care. Check the base watch’s source and condition before building on it.
Will a modified watch keep its water resistance?
Do not assume it will retain its factory water-resistance rating. The SKX007 guide describes case and crystal gaskets as part of water resistance, but it does not report a test result for a completed modification. Opening a case or replacing components can affect seals; appearance alone cannot show whether a watch is water-resistant. If you intend to wear a modified build around water, seek professional inspection and appropriate testing first.
